View Full Version : G.I. Joe Renegades Is Upsetting Me...

I hadn't watched any of the episodes on TV, so the new DVD set is my first exposure to Renegades. I just finished the first disc, and so far, I'm loving this new take on GI Joe. It's fresh and exciting, has great production value and animation, but most of all, it's...well, depressing, because it's looking like we'll never get anything past season one. Since I haven't finished the season yet, I have no idea if things are wrapped up decently, or if things are left open and unanswered, but either way, it's not fair that I'm allowing myself to get invested in this series when it goes nowhere.
I guess I'll just take what I can get and hope DVD/Blu-Ray sales are high enough that it maybe justifies production of a second season. Hey, DVD sales saved Family Guy, right?
Other than the episode "Rage," where Destro is kidnapping homeless people to test mechs (man, that episode was TERRIBLE), every episode has been great. I just finished watching the two-part episode "Return of the Arashikage" and it's one of the best episodes of anything that I've ever watched.
As for the characters, I love Snake-Eyes and Tunnel Rat, and most of all, Scarlett is AWESOME. I also love Cobra re-imagined as an evil corporation...the Baroness' new look is sweet (digging the short hair) and I'm waiting for Cobra Commander to get more involved...he didn't appear much in the first disc.
I'm really bummed this series got the shaft when you take into account all the crap cartoons that run for a million seasons.
*sigh*

I really enjoyed the series. In my opinion the show wraps up just like any TV show would in it's Season Finale.
It's more of a (prequel to ARAH/Whatever Joe Canon you follow), which would be the proper way to enjoy this series.
if there were a season 2 I think the whole "renegades" thing would got out the window considering how the series ends.
I actually spoke to a couple of friends who are not into GI joe and they both said it was great and wished there was another season coming.
Personally, I would love to see a 44 minute Live action GI joe TV series 10 - 13 episodes...introduce new baddies and joes, kill them off, write new ones in, bring them back from the dead...oh well, that'll never happen.

One of my favorite moments of Renegades was the "Duke dream" sequence that rolled during the credits of the last episode.
It was a totally fun way to connect Renegades and ARAH.

I only got to see it out of order on youtube and a couple at my sister's house. Watching it now on dvd and in higher quality was an evening well spent.
"Return of the Arashikage" is one of my favorites as well. For me it is a great update to the mythos while staying true to it at the same time.

It is not on the dvd because that occurs in the last episode and this set only has the first half of the season.

All I gotta say is you now know EXACLTY how those of us who wanted more Resolute still feel today. It sucks seeing the cartoon you wanted more of get cancelled...Renegades will sleep well with Resolute down in Davey Jone's GI JOE foot locker 67,000 fathoms down in the ocean...

I can't believe the Renegades DVD has NO special features at all. NONE. That sucks balls.

Renegades ends with loose plot threads that will never be tied up.
That said, I want more of BOTH of 'em.

I loved Renegades. Caught every episode when it was aired. I was severely disappointed when I found out they were "putting it on hiatus". It had such great potential, not only as a series but as a toy line. The rest of the series has great episodes, and I think it ends well enough.

I wasn't sure of the series when it first came out and am still not a big fan of the animation style but I really came to enjoy the show with the more episodes I watched. I would have like to seen it continue on after season 1. I think my favorite 2 episodes were Homecoming parts 1 and 2. That to me was just some really great Joe story telling.

Not really. You're only half way through the season. The show actually did a pretty good job wrapping everything up in a nice neat bow at the end. I can think of maybe only one hanging plot point which I can't even bring up with you until you've seen the rest. Let's just say that everything gets sorted out, and if there had been a season two the Joe team we all know and love would be just beginning.

This thread warms my heart!
I liked Resolute, except for the Stormshadow stuff. Thanks to the comics, I've always seen him as an incredibly interesting gray character.
I loved Renegades all the way through. The approach to Cobra was both entertaining and quite interesting in the light of our modern world and the power corporations have. CC is the best he's ever been in this series, other than the first IDW CC. The Baroness is amazing in the show.
I've never really been a fan of the Joes. It was nice to see them in a different light and finding them far more interesting than the classic takes.

Yes, Renegades actually gave them multi-layered personalities.

I here you bro. Who knows, maybe they will make a season 2. If they don't, maybe whatever Joe cartoon that replaces Renegades will be even better. Only time will tell I guess, lol.

Sigh...Considering how great the show is, I'm shocked, SHOCKED, that it didn't catch on. Was it the fact that it was running on the HUB? I don't know how widely available that channel is, but perhaps if it aired on a different network it would have caught on.
Like I said, hopefully DVD sales will be brisk, and the show will pull a Family Guy and return. I won't hold my breath, however...

BTW, I had no idea the A-Team was such a big influence on Renegades. I'm not just talking about the premise, I'm talking about how some some of the episodes are even laid out, what with them helping common folk and improvising weapons from random stuff and whatnot.

Renegades was/is a great watch for me. It was so refreshing to have a series that had a progressive story line instead of an episodic approach. The twist with how Cobra is portrayed in the story makes them so much more dangerous and with the Joes on the run with finite funding really makes their actions more heroic. That little thing they did at the end of the credits was the worst for me; it felt like they added it because the fan base was so ridged and set in the old ARAH that they had to add it to appease the bitchy old guard, kind of a cop-out for me. Sure it was funny on one side but such a let down on the other. Now I just don't watch past the last episode credit point and say in my own little fantasy world.

Seeing the Joes become heroes through their actions makes all of the difference. I always have a hard time when a story tells you these characters are the heroes and you're supposed to accept it.
BTW, I love that Baroness and the Destro design is amazing.
I love the art style completely.

Renegades might be might favorite of the Joe cartoons. I liked the progressive story, and there were a lot of Easter eggs throughout the series (as a Falcon fan, one of my favorites was in Homecoming Part I). Even if it was similar to A-Team, I liked that it was different from other incarnations of Joe.

I loved Renegades, the only thing I wish they would have done differently was stayed closer to the comic cannon with real reason why Storm Shadow joined Cobra. I wish he wouldn't have tried to poison Snake Eyes. But even regardless of that I loved it!!!

I'm just amazed at how 'grown up' this so called kids' show is. Certainly the most mature iteration of Joe I've seen. So glad they decided to treat the audience with a little more respect than normal, but so sad it backfired and that the masses seemed to prefer the usual whizz-bang nonsense.

I enjoyed it quite a bit, though I like animation in general, and go into these things with a very open mind.
Fun show, awesome character iterations, and a great all-around update. Looking very forward to the second half of the episodes. Not looking forward to knowing there's nothing more afterward. :(

Didn't like the animation style based on glimpses of it....but it grew on me. The slow motion moves were great. It was a little inconsistent: Snake Eyes looked buff in some frames and rail thin in others.
It certainly had a more defined story arc than any other iteration.
I don't know why the story of HardMaster-Softmaster/SE's silence/Storm Shadow/Scarlett are tweaked each time to give a different version of events. Maybe because SE saving Scarlett in the helicopter was implied to be Vietnam? And Storm Shadow and SE are pitted against each other to a greater or lesser degree?

If had been drawn to the quality and art Resolute used I might have been able to sit in front of long enough to experience the purported "amazing" story. I am a visual creature...if its not eye pooping awesome then I could careless if it was epic level writting that Shakespeare would herald as a masterpiece. I just could not get passed the way Duke look like Beavis, the assinine antics of Mindebender and the whole we are not really Gi Joe yet so we wont even bother looking military at all in our Mystery Machine wannabe truck on the run like the A-team....it would all make me laugh too much, no longer find it amauzing and just flat out ruin it..

Well, I finished Season 1, Volume 1. I fucking love this show.
That said, I'm really pissed that they never made a Renegades Baroness figure. I think she's jumped to my top all-time wanted list.
I'm talking the version where she's wearing her glasses and trenchcoat, not her battle suit and visor.

I just the saw unmasked Ren Storm shadow...Really liked that sculpt.
I hope they plan on releasing baroness at some point, I wouldn't mind a Zartan without the copy Cat suit.

I really liked this show. Rather than shoving in a hundred Joes all at once the studio had the right idea to focus on a small cast, allowing for stronger character development and interactions (much like in recent Transformers cartoons).

Just started watching this on Netflix (home sick in bed today). It's shockingly good, I am really impressed (and I'm super picky when it comes to animation) I don't mind the art style, lthought the animation is a touch inconsistent - love the painterly background textures ala Clone Wars.
The writing is sharp and surprisingly mature and I dig the "A-Team" set-up much more than I ever thought, and all the classic cameos are great, looks like Law & Order in Ep. 8.
The dynamic with Flint And Lady Jaye is fantastic.
Oh, and Roadblocks voice acting is ace! "sorry, Snakes, we grow 'em big Biloxi"

My only serious gripe (which I totally understand the reasoning on) is that it'd be nice if they were allowed to use more realistic weaponry)
