View Full Version : New GI Joe Aircraft

My brother (Brice B.) and I made a couple of custom True Heroes F-22's, into the new GI Joe aircraft. Below is a little info about the new Joe aircraft.

With the recent retirement of the F-14, and the scheduled retirement of the Skystriker in 2009, the GI Joe team has needed a new air and ground attack aircraft. With terrorism on the rise all over the world (thanks to Cobra), the GI Joe team must retain an aircraft capable of carrier operations. GI Joe have always demanded the very latest technology, but with the F-35C years away form being fielded, the Joe team needed a fifth generation aircraft. To fill this need in a timely manner, it was decided to convert an existing airframe.

Introducing the GI Joe GhostStriker.

The Ghoststriker program started in the late 1980's as a program to convert existing airframes into the latest generation fighter/bomber aircraft. The F-16 was chosen as the initial airframe to be converted, but with only limited success, the program was canceled after only a small number of aircraft being produced. The program was reinstated in 2002 to develop a replacement for the aging Skystrikers.

At great expense to the US Defense Department, the F-22C (carrier variant) was developed exclusively for GI Joe. The F-22C was designed from the F-22A, and has 73% common parts.

During the F-22's development in the late 1980's and early 90's, the decision was made to abandon the idea of the F-22 being a dual purpose airframe to meet the needs of both the US Navy and Air Force. Designers favored a light weight airframe for increased performance. This light airframe is insufficient to withstand the stresses of carrier use. Today's new composite technology has allowed for the reinforcement of the F-22 airframe with only a modest increase in weight. The F-22C program allowed for no more than a 15% weight increase and a target goal of 10%. The program yielded an impressive 7% increase in the overall weight of the aircraft. Along with the reinforced airframe, landing gears, and tail hook, the F22C was developed with folding wings, and larger control surfaces for improved low speed performance to operate as a carrier based platform.

The F-22C shares similar features with the F-35, such as a full-panel-width "panoramic cockpit display", and a cockpit speech-recognition system to improve the pilot's ability to operate the aircraft over the current-generation F-22A. Other improvements are in the avionics, navigation, and targeting systems.

The US Air Force/Navy experimental Digital Aerial Camouflage Pattern (DACP) is being field tested on one of the GhostStrikers. Initial testing has proven the new design to be very effective, and will be implemented on all new GhostStrikers.

To date, only six Ghoststrikers have been produced, with plans for a total of 8 aircraft to be delivered. Only two Ghoststrikers have completed testing and are about to enter service.

The first Ghoststriker to complete testing, became the first of four aircraft to form Strike Fighter Squadron 223 (The Flying Pirates) and deploys with the USS Harry S. Truman in the Atlantic fleet.

The second to complete testing, forms the 225th Specter Strike Squadron, and deploys with the USS Ronald Reagon in the Pacific Fleet.

With the Ghoststriker, GI Joe will have the most advanced aircraft ever to fly.

You fellas did a fine job all the way around. I especially appreciated all the background story and the military jargon at the beginning. Great stuff. If only you boys worked for Hasbro, you could straighten them out regularly. Thanks again, fellas. Really great job.

Serious props to the digital camo paint job.

Thanks, it was a lot of work coming up with the concept and even more to paint it. My brother and I had a good time working on this project. The real credit should go to the guys that have posted their custom F-22s on here already for all the inspiration they've given us.

The 25th Joe figures fit nicely inside this F-22.

I'll get some pics with Ace inside posted up tomorrow.

Ok, first excellent job. Seriously, this is not an "excellent job" just to say it and move on, but an honest to god EXCELLENT JOB!

These look awesome.

Secondly, where do you get these? TRU? I'm not near one so I don't casually see these.

Your job does make me want to do the same even though it means I have to drive 101 miles round trip to get them.

Ewok, they are "True Heroes" F-22s and they only sell them at TRU for $25. Don't spent your time driving, order one online.

Thanks to everyone for the complements! When time allows I'll try to post how I made the camo and the graphics for the blue prints.

Thanks, I looked online for some ideas for ghosts, I really couldn't find one that looked "right". While all ghost can fly, I wanted mine to look like it had wings. Finally I found one that looked pretty closed to what I had in mind, with a few small changes it worked fairly well. I can send you a copy of the picture I used as inspiration if you want.

Do you guys have the helmet from the 2004 Ace? I substituted that one for the one that came with him to make him look more like a jet jockey and less like a helo driver. It looks pretty awesome. Sorry, I'm such a perfectionist. You guys have done such a great job on these! Have you thought about some kind of low vis US, Joe and number markings? Man, I wish I had your time and talent...

I agree with you about Ace's helmet, but that is the only helmet I have for him.

As for marking, and numbers, I didn't want to do too much, because they will be up for sale soon, and whoever buys them can add any markings that want. So if anyone is interested in buying them, PM me or my brother.

They do not come with bomb bays, I made it on my F-22 (the one with the skull and cross bones).

I just cut open the bottom of the plane, and made the doors from the piece I cut out. I added hinges and built a box to be the bomb bay. Sorry but I don't have pictures of how I made the bomb bay, but you can see how it's done at this thread.

I saw the pics of the F-22 Ghost strikers customs and decided to pick up an F-22 to turn into a modern era skystriker. I noticed in the pics of the Ghostriker that the jets have bombay doors and the wing tips turn up for aircraft carrier mode.

I went to work on my F-22 last night and noticed that mine doesn't have bombay doors and that the wing-tips do not turn up. Has anyone else experienced this? Are there two differnet versions of the F-22 out?

Also the one I have Modern Joes do not fit very well in the cockpit. Anyone know what the deal is?

NC Joe,

I made the bomb bay myself. As for the wings being folded in the one pic, I just taped them in the upright position for that pic.

Sorry but I don't have pictures of how I made the bomb bay, but you can see how it's done at this thread.

Cool...thanks!!! I'll probably not try the doors...I'm afraid I'll mess it up...but I plan on giving it a re-paint and trying to make it as much like the original skystriker as possible.

Excellent! I love the digital camo. Looks so good! I recently did the F-22 in a classic SkyStriker scheme...nice to see the grey and camo patterns. This is a great toy and I look forward to seeing what peole do with them going forward.

You and your brother executed those two planes flawlessly. You guys have excellent control and planning on thowing down paint which is evident in your Digital Camo Scheme. The Marines did a Digi Pattern on one of their Hornets from the 'VW' squadron and it reminded me of that. Again, awesome job...the best paint job I've seen.
