DG Joe Self Help thread and what I have learned

So after hitting up two of my local Dollar Generals today I learned some things that might be valuable to you.

But before I get to that,

Let me rewind back to May 26. I will reference the stores by A and B. I went to store A and they had all 6 figures I bought them all (hold the scalper comments please :D) and sold them at cost to fellow tankers. Then I went down the street to store B. Store B didn't have them. I brought in my receipt and a couple of the DG Joes I just bought in to the store and got to talking to a very nice manager. She agreed to order me a case. I also found out through talking with managers and store workers at both stores that there shipments come in on Saturdays.


Saturday, June 2. I head to store B first thing bright and early thinking well I bought a case last week I'm sure they ordered a new one. Nope nothing new. I head to store A nothing either. I check back Sunday, Monday and Tuesday, and then today and still nothing.

The following also took place on Saturday, June 2

Here is were it gets interesting.

Store B:

The nice manager had ordered the wrong stuff, after we talked, she got busy and later on put in an order for the 3.50$ Joes.
I could have got upset but she was doing me a favor, I played it cool took out the receipt that I still had and she manually keyed in an order for 6 cases in her handheld scanner. Should be here next Saturday June 9th. Fingers crossed.

Store A:

I get to talking to another very nice manager, I ask her if they will be getting any 6 dollars Joes in the store. Keep in mind this is the store that I got the first case from back on the 26 of May. She tells me she has no idea what I am talking about. I show her the receipt and a picture of the DG joes. Thanks Hisstank. And she says oh those. Ok were getting somewhere now. Interesting enough when I mentioned the word GI Joe she took me straight to the 3.50$ figures. The nice manager also agrees to order me a case.

What I have learned?

One of the big issues here is the DG Joes came out after the seasonal reset and at the time MU figures where on the plan-o-gram. So instead of making a new home for the Joes as they show up they are being placed on the MU figures pegs because the price is the same. The problem is when the Joes sell more MU figures are ordered or nothing is ordered at all. The DG Joes are being sent out randomly to stores from the distribution warehouse. So because they have no real home on the pegs and are not in the seasonal plan-o-gram they are not reordered automatically. This was confirmed by two managers and also by the given example I stated in the first paragraphs. Please keep in mind I have done the same experiment with more then the 2 stores. I have noticed this trend of lack of reordering, manually or automatically at more then 10 stores in my area over a month long span. My new experiment is to see if the manager at store B can actually get a case or 6 cases that she put an order in for. I will know next Saturday.


*The shelf help part.

This is what you need to do to get things rolling.
With the UPC's I have provide (see receipt) go to your local DG.
Talk to the manager or who ever is in charge of ordering. Be very nice and use your manners (that is the most important part) have the manager key in the UPC's in a hand held scanner. They can tell you if anything is coming and also if nothing has been ordered. You will be surprised a lot of stores are not getting them. Even if the manager says yes some are on there way please have them order you a case. Swear up and down you will be back to buy it. If all goes smoothly maybe you can get them to keep reordering a case for you. If you had read the other paragraphs you will know that these are not on auto order. So that means you will have to keep asking the nice manager to reorder every week. Or maybe you will get them to do it automatically if your nice and you come through on your promise to buy the cases.

I forwarded a DG Stormy to a tanker in England. They have been royally screwed by Hasbro the past few years and I had an opportunity and found him at random. It felt good to do a solid for someone I had never met, and it opened up some pretty nice chatting cross the pond.

I heartily recommend if you are in a position to help another tanker out with these figures do so. And don't be stingy and send those crappy Dukes (unless of course you are asked for...). It'll make you feel good to help a friend out and it'll help everyone here remember that we are a community and that means we support each other.

This is the approach that I just put into motion yesterday. I, too, was initially shown to the $3.50 Joes. I explained what I was looking for and pulled out a Word Doc. It included a picture of the receipt from the "found in Oklahoma" thread here on the Tank. This included the UPCs for the six figs. I was also able find a pic of the six figs sitting next to the Hasbro case which had additional number which may - or may not - have been relevant.

The nice manager was kind enough to get her order gun and look the items up. I told her that if she could get two cases, I would buy them both. Please, thank you, here's a phone number where you can reach me. I have checked all five of the DG's near my home and office and not a one has any of these guys hanging on the pegs. She told me when her order day was and that if she could get them it might take a week or two. Didn't care, thank you so much for trying. We'll see what happens. Its odd that these exclusives seem to be quite popular(at least amongst our community) and yet so many stores seem to have to 'go the extra mile' to get them in ?

I really do not mind helping folks out at all. I have gone to 5 stores 3 times a week and have found several of them. The only complaint is the fact that some of the folks that ask for them are soooo slow responding. I am only charging 6 bucks and 5 shipping and I think that is pretty reasonable. Keep in mind that I use my gas and time to do this. I am not what most would consider as "well off" and I support a family of six by myself, so money is pretty tight.

I simply do this so that we can all share in the joy of collecting the figures that we want. There is nothing more frustrating than trying to get the figures you want and they are not available.

Most people should also keep in mind the needs of others and not request the figs just because they could only get 1 set and want an extra this or that. The point behind these threads is to assist the guys that simply cannot get them at all in stores.

I would like to thank everyone that has gon out of there way to get these for fellow Tankers.

These toys are sold at Dollar General stores, here in the United States. They sell for $6.00 or $6.50 after taxes. There are some regions of the U.S.A. that do not have these stores.

Your thinking like a joe collector and understandable so. Dollar Generals main bread and butter is hygiene and food products. The couple cases of joes that they sell isn't enough to put a manager in a ordering frenzy like you would want them too. It's key words that I hear when I'm talking to managers like well I didn't know these were popular that set off alarms in my head.

Because to me I'm like what the hell these are one of the most popular gi joe figures right now on the Tank and in the fandom. And the managers are like huh??

When I order a case every week I am trying not only to get these for people who can't find them but also show the managers that yes there is a demand for these and its a good revenue generator for the store. Another thing to think about is these stores are geared towards lower income families. Toys may not be the prioirty in these households and past sales may not really suggest a need to order more toys. Maybe someone who works in retail and toys can chime in here.

Ok so I did the same at the DG near me...first time around nada, the guy left a note o the manager and one how lost it...side note I think he ordered and tried to make money for himself on eBay, as his closing remarks to my 12 yr. old son and I were "Id buy a couple of sets and sell them, make some quick cash!". So about to weeks later my wife nd I go again this time during the day to talk with the manager. She knows nothing of a note and after she finishes yelling at another employee she agrees to take all the numbers and order them for us. Fast forward a day later, get a phone call "I can't order these cause they are not on the plan-o-gram, and the regional manager said no". My response I will buy all of the set, you don't even need to put them out. "if they come in I will give you a call...". Thats it, shut down... This stinks cause I actually have my two boys who are huge fans and we can't find them any where. I would prefer to avoid paying over priced dollar store joes. We will be going to NOLA hopefully we can get them at a good price.

Back on topic...These figures were made for DG stores, or at least that type of retailer. There are a shitload (technical term) of these stores in the USA, so odds are that a ton were produced. I bet it will take time for the figures to make their way onto pegs, but there should be plenty to go around. I think we all need to be patient. If there's one quality missing in modern America, it's patience (especially in the slightly nerdy toy collecting community). I'd wager the black hooded Cobra Commander and Shipwreck will be peg-warming Christmas 2013...seriously.

I guess the answer is no , because you keep failing to answer. If the answer is no then this thread is pointless. I know you think you are creating a solution but in reality you are creating the problem. If you need a cause why not stand up for something that makes a difference. Join the peace corps or go give blood or something, helping people who ate to lazy or impatient to help them selves will not get you in to toy collector heaven . A wise man once said " it is better to be remembered by the ones you love , than to be revered by a bunch of ass holes."

I gotta say regardless of the negativity, and the fact that I was late to this show, and am at the bottom of this list. I do appreciate the fact that there are people out here trying to help. I would love to see this attitude applied in many more aspects of our society. Great things have small beginings. While I'm fairly cirtin I might not ever see these joes. Its nice to know that a few more people will get to enjoy them, and accomplish their goals. I have been out to many dgs and made mutiple trips to no avail. I have been assured they have been ordered, left my number, only to have them sold out from benieth me. What I'm saying is this. I don't think that the majority of people wanting these figures are lazy, or puting forth a lack of effort. They are just difficult to attain in a lot of areas even if your doing all the right things.

This is fantastic info for hisstank members searching for the DG Joes....I would put this knowledge to good use if only we had a DG up in Canada.

Every week or two, I go into our local Dollarama store, and hope to see those red and white cards on the shelves. So far, nothing, but it's not a big deal because I would be damn shocked if I actually found them.

I took these UPC numbers into 2 dollar generals and asked if they could be ordered, at which I found a complete set of 6 at each store previously, and the workers there including the manager just looked at me like I was fucking crazy.

Hi, sounds like maybe someone may have gone by those stores already and ruined it for the rest of us. Or of course there is a ton of other things, bad day,just being jerks, etc.

Latest update. Helpful Manager was, indeed, able to order in my Joes. Could be here later this week, may take two. She said it depends on availability, but its looking good !
