Cut the top off of Gung Ho's head and add a hat and glasses.
The head from the old one is WAAAYY to big.

I'm pretty sure that Hasbro used a newer Wild Bill's hat for their 25th Custom (http://www.hisstank.com/forum/attachment.php?attachmentid=1565&d=1193790779). As for glasses just trim out a pair from some thin styrene.

it's an easy Road Block repaint if we had a proper head

Well, Hasbro used Destro's lower torso and legs to get the 80's wrestler spandex look for their figure. But I think that there's plenty of info above to get the ball rolling.

okay, i got a Wild Bill and Sgt. both with removable hats to test which one is better, now all i need to know is, what the heck is styrene?...is it something i could get at a craft store, say, um, Michaels or the like?...or is it more of a hobbie store deal?

I wonder if you could use the glasses that came with the Baroness in the comic pack or Imperial Procession 6 pack

i'm work'n on it...i should hopefully have pics tomorrow, minus the hat (waiting for it in the mail)...
i finally fig'd out what styrene was and picked some up at the local hobbie store...
to be honest, i was never a huge fan of the sarge, didn't dislike him or anything, but he wasn't a big deal to me, that is until i saw Hasbros custom...it is freak'n schweet!...so now that i have the parts, i am make'n one!

Sorry, I thought I'd responded to your question about styrene, I know I typed in an answer. I guess I just didn't hit "post".
Either way, I'm glad you found it, nothing thicker than a 1/16" is needed, maybe even thinner. Can't wait to see the final product.

as you can see, my Sarge is coming along quite nicely if I do say so myself...I'm just waiting for his hats to arrive...C'MON USPS!...I used Detros legs like Hasbro's, except I wasn't thrilled with his gun holster...so, since I already had Gung-Ho dismantled to use his upper arms for my SS, and I was using his head for the Sarge, I stole his slimmer holster (w/manlier gun)…I also used G-H's shoes too, as it allowed me to give him a spat kinda look ala' the original Sgt....I can't make the glasses till I get a hat on him, but I have been practicing...I'll post the final Sgt. when I get him done...

send me a Destro, RoadBlock, and a Gung-Ho, plus you'll need to send a hat from either a v3 1988 Sarge, or a v5 2002/v7 2003 Wild Bill...and there is no guarantee it'll look good as i have obviously yet to put a hat and glasses on mine...i'm just assumed it would look okay and made the fig

i just reached into my itty bitty ditty bag of thoughts, and you know what i figured out?
the card bubbles should be PERFECT for making sarge's shades! sorry i didnt think of this before you dropped what, $1.50 on styrene?
the card buble would be sweet because you could paint the back of it and the clear front would give it a shiny apperance like real aviator shades!
dang maybe i'll try this myself! haha
making the sarge sounds like a great way to break into customizing (he would be my first if i tried!)
and yours is coming along VERY nicely! love the boots idea!

the flesh tone(s) have been the biggest pain to do...i have to mix it up for each invidual custom, cause they all seem to have a different tone...i've been mixing Testers colors plus a flat clear acrylic (thanks Moonsteaker) in to make it extra flat...the one thing that is driving me nuts is that the paint never seems to be fully dried, always has a slight tackiness to it...

MAN!, this is a great idea!...i'll have to try it out when i get home...i like idea of the glasses staying shiny, although we'll see how it looks in reality...thanks for the tip...still waiting on the hats...by the way, i bet the Sarge would be glad to take your customising virginity...good luck

so, how bout this hat?...i had my doubts that it would work, but i tried...
now i'm STILL waiting on the Wild Bill hat...WTH!!!
the pic below is a shot of my more militant Destro...as a result of using his legs for the Sarge, i

i took gloves from a trooper...i thought Flints hands would now look too
short cause his originals are longer than a troop but it looked okay...the
gloveless trooper can be seen behind Destro...also, whadya think about
Dukes helmet?

thanks for all the tips Hicks...the hat, styrene, heck, I wasn't even aware of Hasbro using Destros legs till you pointed it out...
the guy growing hair is definitely cocky (penisy if you're Han Griffin)...all my troops stand in formation but him...his gloves are off, no helmet, hair transplant, leaning on his gun...slacker!

i'm using the standard little jars from the hobbie store, the same ones i used to paint pirate ships with my dad a brazillion yrs ago...i have no idea why it has still yet to fully dry
gw2tulsa
01-02-2008, 09:59 AM
Sounds like you may be using the Testors ENAMELS and not the newer acryl colors. The enamels will react with the rubber/plastic used on the action figure and not cure (ie, stay tacky).
-Gary
Driftbot
01-02-2008, 10:33 AM
you could try to seal it with testor's dull coat spray.
it would help tone down the shine some, and would dry better so it isnt tacky anymore.
anyone think about using the new wild bill hat?
i still havent seen the MC pics, so i dont know how it would look. just a thought.

you could always use a hobby knife to "filet" the tastles off the hat. ;)
but does it have a pointy middle, with the 4 dents around the sides?
to me that is the defining look of a drill sargeant's cover.

I think Wild Bill's hat is more of a floppy Civil War-era hat and Slaughter's is the Smokey the Bear, 4 points-in-the-middle drill sergeant type hat.
Edit: Found out that the type of hat that Slaughter wears is a "campaign hat".
Wild Bill wears a Stetson hat, or also known as a "Cavalry Hat".

I'd love to, problem is, I can't get a hold of wave 4 to be able to make him...even if I did, I need 3 figs x $6 = $18
(the cheapest I can find them) and I still don't have hats!...if Alyosha had the kits that's another $15
plus shipping!
so lets add this up for those bad at math
3(figs) x $6 = $18
$18 + $18 to $20(kits plus shipping) = $38
$38 + my effort = ?
? + $5 (shipping) = at the very, very least, what $50 a fig?!
and like I said, this is assuming I had the "parts"...
believe me, I would love to do it, it's fun for me, but
the logistics aren't there (right now at least)
also, this doesn't even take into account a card if
you wanted it, from gunslinger...
the Sarge, BY FAR, was my most expensive figure,
but he was worth it, as, more than likely, Hasbro
will not be making him...

An update if anybody cares

we care...looks good...like CobraCollector said, maybe tighten up the "USA" and your good...a tip on the glasses...there is a five pack of cheapo rescue figs at TRU ($6), a couple of the guys have sunglasses, two different good choices...i bought them and delicately trimmed off the shades and glued them to my Sarge...way better looking than making them and way easier...also, wanna join me in begging Alyosha to supply the Sarge hat seperately from the "drill instructor" kit?

I have already joined in the begging for the hat - though I asked for the whistle and baton too.

quick tip for anyone considering making their own Sarge and are not in a hurry...wait till the Copperhead comic pack comes out...his arms are already flesh tone and will make a better quality fig, especially at the shoulder/elbow joints...
also, if you're thinking of using the new Wild Bill head, i'd really thnk twice...his face is much more narrow than than the G-H face and it looks really silly on the RB body...just my opinion

yeah, I tried using Wild Bill's head because I used my gung-ho for dress blues. I wish I would have known, I might have waited to make my sarge. My guy looks like a buff Wild Bill...LOL

I think the pics don't do him justice, but he's all your recipe, except I changed up the belt and used Ripper's with the upper shoulder harness clipped off. I also went a little darker on the camo, but he blends in perfectly with the other Joes, and now I have my 25th Sarge! Thanks for the inspiration Eddie, Cobra Collector, and big thanks to Dark 5cythe for the head/hat!

Use Fireflys goggles, paint em black or Silver your choice--Use Bazookas body less the arms and use either serpentors upper arms if you wanna paint or use Copper head uppers and bazooka lower arms (makes him a little gorrillaish but I like it). Paint torso black and find a skilled kitbasher (thanx Magick!) to saw the hat off an old Sgt. Slauter head...worked perfectly and I love mine! Use the head from the Major Blood from the DVD pack and viola..!
