Devil Ray (Sea Ray II) WIP by Viper6

[Viper6]

So my demon of the deep aka hydroviper (WIP) needs a bitchn ride to assist with sinkn some joes...i give you the developing "Devil Ray", its basical cobras version of the Sharc (where as the original sea ray had a break away sub and remained a jet glider the devil ray IS a highly manueverable aircraft AND submarine w/deep dive capabilties). Made from a star wars clone wars naboo star skiff, some vintage arah sea ray parts, and some modern fodder, its shaping up nice. its my first run with green stuff too (thanks alyosha, for the advice brother).

8-JUN-12 update: added a rear facing missile launcher, after all devil rays are known for their tail sting, also spec'd out the searchlight!

10-JUN-12 update: added detail sketch/paint map, and initial paint apps/test shot (paints; lothern blue by citadel).

17-JUN-12 update: final paint apps w/ wash n sealer to upper half, missiles, and one gun. tail section now attached attached (FYI; missile fires pretty fkn far), and got some stickers applied (cobrastickers.com, love these guys).

19-JUN-12 update: base coat on the haul, LED wired up (see the circular switch on the underside?), got thetop and bottom screwed back together AAAAND cobra stickers (again with the win) sent me freebie stickers for my missiles just cause i inquired!

anyone got diagram for assembling an LED, i wanna insert a search light in that bubble on the haul and find a lense to fit it.

It looks great so far I might be able to help you out with leds. All you really need to do is grab the led from radio shack, then get the right resistor and battery and you're in flynn. I have a diagram or two laying around. I'll look for it when we get back from camping.

cool iDz, im going after paint and lighting tomorrow on my shopping run, got her pretty much all sanded and ready to go, just gotta drop the LED in, secure, and then shape the green stuff around the rear firing weapon, then get this canopy and lense figured out. i hit jess up with an emergency request hope he can help (so wish i was set up to cast). have fun camping man

emailed tofujesse and hes coming to the rescue on this canopy and lens, sure i could slap this together with canopy color as is and scratch the searchlight feature....but good is truly the enemy of great. now...to match the paints on this to the arah version; unfortunately tanker "heymilt" eyeballed and guestimated his work on that mantis to sea ray custom (that thing is fkn great again, btw). hope i can nail this.

no problem man, i found a good color i think. the canopy and lense were shipped to jess as of this morning, gonna get the led in this weekend, and the final paints done (canopy aside) then its just waiting for the stickers and parts back from jess and hopefully thisll be done on or about the 23rd.

You've outdone yourself sir!! The Sea Ray was a fav Cobra vehicle of mine (even wrote of it in the Our Joe Story fanfic, with a Sea Slug Commander named Burst Wyrm,) it looks AWESOME so far!

shit jess you could probably make this in half the time (and for half the money) and twice as nice im sure.

i got like 20.00 in to the star skiff
then another 24.00 for sea ray parts
15.00 in new paints and sealers
about 10.00 in green stuff
scratch another 20.00 -30.00 for the polar sharc; its missile gets built into the tail fin,
LED set up is about 10.00 shipped
then theres the canopy and lense cover casting about 80.00 shipped (more if you hook up your caster cause he handles your business like a boss)
went through about 5.00 in blades and bought 7.00 in sand paper
and then cobra stickers was like 8.00 and the retaliation HISS for other stickers 21.00 (im putting vintage set on the HISS so no loss, and the ones i used for the ray were awesome)
so without even considering the near 20 man hours i got into this drawing, cutting, planning, painting, scultpitng and putn lil stickers on, its already 210.00 minimum. i'd have to sell one for 300.00 to even begin to feel good about it. given i wouldnt have to buy alot of the materials twice, but still its just been an epic endeavor. the next challange once i get this beast all built up is boxing it, and obviously box art. then theres the hydroviper pilot WIP....its not looking like im meeting the joe con deadline for what i had planned.

yeah crimson, i wanted as much vinatage as i could incorporate
so the tail section (modified for rear fire support) was a must, as well as the two missiles (i originally wanted four but it looked crowded and remounting those weapons racks/pilons is a BITCH). of course i had to use the twin cannons and then kept the theme with the coloring on the nose guns, as well as the cast pink/red canopy, couldnt do without that (Thanks Jess). the citadel paints were a close match in color to the arah version and i highly recommend them. cobra stickers really helped complete the look with their repro sea ray set and then i stole some others as needed from my retaliation hiss sticker sheet. stay tuned should have the canopy and LED in middle of this week.

im searching for a graphic design person to consult with for packaging and box art, i went to school for this shit but its been a decade since ive done anythingwith it, and nothing all that impressive back then anyway.

got word that my canopy and lense cover will be here friday and im working with fellow tanker "the process" to jam out packaging for this thing. got to finish the engines, glue em on (forgot to screw em in from the inside and with wires in place i aint taking her apart again), then i'll retouch the paint and throw some gloss sealer on this thing...viola!
also going to paint up the hydroviper pilot this weekend
