Generals Joes had an interview with Chu and I found this in Comicbookmovie.com
Director Jon Chu Requested A Longer Delay For G.I. JOE: RETALIATION (http://www.comicbookmovie.com/fansites/nailbiter111/news/?a=60962)

I look at this the same way as when any president gives a speech --- 1% truth, 99% crap. The long and the short of it is the movie ain't coming out until 3/29/13.

Don't believe it. Sounds to me like he's falling on his sword to assuage the masses for Paramount's sake.

He says what they tell him to say.

At least we know how he settled his little tift with paramount.

I don't see tht he asked for the delay just that he pettitioned to make the delay count for something and to get what they were requesting done right, not cheep and rushed.

Yeah, I read somewhere he was "completely shocked" that the movie was being delayed.

Most likely when they realized Tatum wasn't on set.

HA HA HA HA HA HA HA! Thats funny. The director makes the call to delay a film. Who does this guy think he is Steven Speilberg?
You honestly think that Paramount and Hasbro would go for that?
With all that money on the line? No sir, this call was made way above his pay grade. Don't insult my intelligence.

Yeah, this sounds like a bad attempt at spin.

that is not what he said read it again:

"
The long length of the delay was actually at his request to make sure if they were going to go through the 3D conversion that they do it the right way and not be rushed. "

in other words he said if they(paramount) had to delay it then he needed more time to do the 3D conversion correctly. sounds more like a negotiation. It does not say he requested the delay in the first place, it does say he probably negotiated for more time. Which was smart on his part because if the conversion was rushed and sloppy he would take the hit for it.

I don't know, I like Chu. In previous interviews he came across as a genuine fan, and I think whatever the final product; he did the best he was allowed to do.

Pretty sure a director only has two missions during filming... stay on budget, stay on schedule. No way Jon Chu asked for a delay, much less have that gianourmously expensive request granted.

He said from the beginning that he wanted 3D but Paramount was against it because of the extra time and money involved. Here we are a year or so later and we're back at square one.

Amazing spider man would have kicked the crap out of Retaliation most deffinately. Then the new batman flick would steal any thunder it had left.

As the person who actually spoke to Jon Chu about this... he did not "ask for the delay". He was surprised and disappointed that the date got changed just like the rest of us.

All he did was ask that if Paramount was determined to delay the film that they at least give them time to do it right, and Paramount agreed.

Original source with all of the details is here:

If he wanted a longer delay to make sure the 3D was done right that is a good thing. Post-converting a 2D film to 3D is notoriously bad if they do a rush job. I will not see a film in 3D myself, but if it mist be made that way it's best to do a good job.

The article reads very clearly to me.
"He did admit that he was disappointed about the push back of the film, but he is working hard to do the film right."

I guess people just read what they want it to say, not what it says.

Don't believe it. Sounds to me like he's falling on his sword to assuage the masses for Paramount's sake.

He says what they tell him to say.I agree. Early insider word was that Chu was "shellshocked" by the sudden delay.

Tell you one thing...if I was one of the lead actors, say Dwayne Johnson, I'd be pissed at Paramount about the delay. That dude did a shitload of interviews pushing the movie, and he just totally wasted his time.

Then Paramount's going to come a'knockin' in 9 months to ask him to start up all over again. I'd tell them to gargle cock.

^ This

Hard to believe his statement got misintepreted, it's pretty straight forward.

Paramount delayed Retaliation to convert it to 3D, Chu asked for a longer delay in order to make sure it was done right.

Lol, so what you're saying is: what "they" have told us are the reasons for the delay, are the actual reasons? That can't be right! There has to be more to the story than just converting the film to 3D like "they" originally stated.

As i said in another thread where this picture was posted

Photo of G.I. Joe: Retaliation - Guyism (http://guyism.com/entertainment/movies/more-news-on-the-g-i-joe-retaliation-delay.html/attachment/retaliation)

showing roadblock and duke breaking through the fence. this looks like it could be after the initial attack later in the movie. so maybe they have filmed more channing? and they did want to convert it to 3D plus they got cold feet because of the poor preformance of battleship and with spidey and batman coming out.

It could be in the beginning. They're sneaking into a compound to secure some lets say MARS tech, and they're to hold the area until the helicopters come to lift it out. Instead the helicopters wipe them out, leading to the rest of the movie. I always figured that Duke would be presumed killed, but actually was captured to be used in experiments.

Changing gears, maybe Chu saw the Ghost Recon Alpha trailer and realized what a real Gi Joe film should look like.

Tatum hasnt been contacted and now Chu is calling for the length of time? How does he know how much time is needed days after the news? Pretty sure arent already dont rewriting whatever they need to. Anyway, yeah, i dont care at this point because all this random news is flowing out and it makes no sense.

I agree. This doesn't contradict anything that I can tell. He says he was surprised at the delay, but now that it is happening he wants to do the best job possible.

I don't think Jon Chu has any leverage with Paramount, so I'm sure he says what they want him to say. They can easily replace him with another director in the credit if they want, and I seriously doubt he'd ask for 3D because he said in an interview that they tested for 3D but chose not to use it. The bottom line is, Paramount has damaged this franchise, and I think it will probably sink like Universal's Battleship when it debuts next Spring.

I'd guess that Paramount initially wanted to delay it until December, hoping they could get a similar box office result as they did last year with "Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol". But Chu lobbied for the extra couple months to get the 3D done right.

The delay shouldn't affect the Rock too much. Now the movie will open a week after Wrestlemania, which could feature the Rock wrestling for the heavyweight title. So he'll have plenty of opportunity to promote the movie again. Did anyone see last year when he was promoting "Fast Five" and stopped by CNN Headline News in the morning to surprise Robin Meade? She's a big fan of his and he stayed there for like an hour to give her an interview. Just thought it was a cool thing for him to do.

It in no way takes almost a year to convert to 3D, the shit they're selling is better off flushed.

I don't blame him. I would try to get as much time as possible with Robin Meade. I'm so in love with her. My wife hates her for some reason...
