^This EXACTLY.
Certainly costs of tools and materials wouldn't allow a mainstream Hasbro line to be that detailed. Though if they put in as much effort as possible, so they could at least use those exact images for the package art, the line would be EPIC.

Maybe if BBI decides to do a futuristic line this is the direction they will go. I have MH-60 Blackhawk (the night raid edition) but it's so realistic that joes just look so silly in them. Of course these vehicles only work with POC/ROC anyway.

Those pictures suddenly make me regret not picking up two of the Black Dragon VTOL's at Wal-Mart last week on clearance.
That massive Joe tank looks great too. It'd be awesome to see something like that if it could open up revealing a mobile command center type playset.

The Ghost Hawk II, The RHINO, the bike and VAMP all look awesome and so the figures. The tank, the jet pack and the "walker" I really do not care for.
Of all the figures, I would love to see the Baroness figure get made.

Those are AWESOME!!!
Yeah, much of those concepts were made already since 2010 to present, just that they were severely cut down as final products likely due to cost.
Makes me wonder though of the holes in the Hiss were to include extra weapons they dropped when they released it.

I wish they stuck closer to the concepts wings/engines with the Ghost Hawk II.
Some of the other stuff is just a bit too Halo-ish for me. I like they way they look, but I don't really want GI Joe to just be a halo rip-off.

Notice the dates on a lot of that stuff is 08' 09' . We may still see some of this. As for the sweet baroness, anybody remember the cancelled archive photos from Joecon? Wasn't there an unreleased baroness?
These are great toyline concepts. I doubt we would have complained about the black dragon being small if it had looked like that.
Next time I see a ghosthawk 2 I'm buyin it and a few cans of krylon

They already worked on TF's, some of their designs were used for DOTM.
If you look close enough, a LOT of the GI Joe VTOL sans some of the weapons, made it to the Ghost HAWK II toy. From the small nubs beneath the sides of the canopy, hell the entire fuselage was used for the Ghost HAWK II.
Wish the Ghost HAWK II came in the colors shown for the VTOL.

Pushing it to say any of this was used for the Ghost hawk 2...a 3 year old could have designed that piece of crap toy we got....thats likr saying you see George Washington's face on a bagel...or was it Abraham Lincoln on a McDondald's french fry? Of the Virgin Mary on an old tortilla shell....I can see a slight homage to the Dragonhawk from the VTOL craft (its still far off tremendously)...and Beachhead looks spot on...why they just cant implement these better then they do is beyond me...and dont give me that "cost savings" bull thats like delayign the movie to make it in "3d!"...they need to go all out after retaliation or this toy line is done for...

I thought you didn't like Joe being too "sci-fi"?

06-01-2012, 03:32 PM
Blown away by the awesomeness. And am pretty impressed by how much was eventually made and how closely the final products stayed true to these concept drawings. Some of these unproduced drawings are great ideas for kitbashes- like combining the ROC Hawk head, jacket, and jacket arms with the ROC RIA Duke body. That City Strike Baroness and Joe Spider Tank need to be made pronto. Ditto for the Joe Aliens-style APC. I doubt we'll ever see that monster-size Joe tank- if only we were in the 80's when those huge vehicles were actually made...

Your funny...no where have I ever said that Joe should'nt look like this...its got that Ghost in the shell, colonial marines, modern high tech feel too it. Just like the stuff in Robotech the standard forces used outside of the veritechs. Its awesome. I dotn see this as "sci-fi" this is future modern military hardware...not stuff you see in star wars...

And call me crazy but... isn't that "SE Motorcycle" concept the current Retaliation Firefly bike??? I'm looking at the 2 side by side on my computer and if you imagine the Firefly bike in shades of black then it's a crazy match too close for coincidence. I always thought the Firefly bike had an amazing sculpt and would benefit from a complete repaint...
I really like that Baroness design, hope Hasbro dusts it off for a future line.
Probably could make your own using reactive armor Scarlett and pieces of ROC Baroness and maybe the lower legs of Retaliation Zartan.

Uh no, not pushing it at all, LOOK at the SIDE of the Ghost HAWK II, the canopy, and nose section. The canopy is the exact same shape, different frame up to the front. Even the bottom rails on the Ghost HAWK II are present in the VTOL concept art. The main things changed aside from the colors are different weapons, less canopy windows, straightened vertical stabilizers, and 2 engines instead of 4.

Aside from a vague resemblence in the nose section and tail..the toy is a far cry execution with too many liberties taken to gimpify it. Had it retained more asthetics like the Black Dragon VTOL...the Ghost Hawk II would have stolen this years vehicle dominance prize...but in true hasbro fashion...they take something incredible, half ass it, and turn it into a stinking pile of crap...I am sure the guy who spent all that time and effort on that drawing wonders what the hell happened to it lol...

If i look close enough I see a skystriker for gods sake...its like looking at clouds I see Mickey Mouse you see Starawberry short cake...whats the point? Its been made already in a terrible rendition of the concept art and that it wasnt even remotely realized. Had it held more to the concept we wouldn't be having this argument would we? We would be out buying at least 5 of them for our collections vs. the ones out there right now collecting dust for the next 3 years...
How badly they used the concept art on the GH2 makes me wonder how much of a wreck they will make the rest of these concept vehicles into..if they even revisit any of them...

Point is nearly the entire fuselage is the same, not some "vague" resemblance. If you're seeing Strawberry Shortcake and a Sky Striker I have no idea what in the hell you're looking at.
What probably happened is that the Retaliation designers and Hasbro probably opted to make a jet transport derived from the Massive Black GI Joe VTOL, which explains why the overall concept is similar but only the fuselage is the same.
Yeah, nice stuff. But we did get most of it already. The only difference is the colors, and you can fix that with some paint. Hasbro makes "toys", not "models".
If you can't see the connection between those designs and what was made, then you're just dense. Some of it looks like it was dropped for good reason. That glider just looks silly. Same for the crab-tank. Joe fans would have crucified Hasbro if they made that. Especially if it was in a ROC box. And the jeep thing is straight out of Halo.
Other than the Baroness, we got all the figures. Storm Shadow was reworked some, and Desert Duke became Dusty.

The saddest part it's that Hasbro will never release these vehicles as we see them here. We've seen what the Ghosthawk II looks like after a round of production and cost analysis. It's just impossible for Hasbro to make detailed molds like these w/o raising the retail price.
I still want them to try to produce that APC.

man...hasbro should have stuck to the subject matter a little bit closer on some of these..way to ruin a good thing guys :)
admittedly some of these got blown just by the sculptors and not the designs like that SS for instance if he had been sculpted all dynamic like that almost marvel universe-esque that figure would have looked really nice.instead he looked blocky and his legs looked skinny
beach head should have looked EXACTLY like that instead of the one we got...baroness and that armored trooper look fantastic where did they gooo?
Yeah, they appear to have ported these designs over to Captain American/Iron Man..

Maybe the impetus was to produce some kind of toy to represent the jeep from Renegades, but I can confirm, as a fan of Halo for 10+ years, that it follows almost every design element from Halo's Warthog, but changed just barely enough to avoid copyright issues.
Yeah, they wouldve also ran into trouble with McFarlane..

No. McFarlane doesn't own that design. It's from Halo, owned by Microsoft.
He may not own the design, but he manufactures the toy, sure maybe he can also sue, fuck knows ..lol.

I've always wondered how Halo avoided Hasbro claiming that it has always borrowed very heavily from GI Joe's aesthetic. Even James Cameron admitted that the Aliens Colonial Military was heavily based on GI Joe, so that stretched APC is just taking the design full circle. It's also why the Aliens and Predator homages Hasbro "hid" in the POC/30th line fit so seamlessly.

These elements are not strictly Renegades. The designes by the artist of Renegades also did Army of 2 and stuff similar in art (which rivaled what they did in Regenades asthetically). The issue wasn't the vehicles...albeit they only used the Coyote thing for most of the show..it was the story and the characters...which were severally lacking...not even Michael Bay could have spiced that stuff up lol...

I've never heard about James Cameron admitting GI Joe was an influence. But I know Starship Troopers (the original novel) was a huge influence on Aliens, to the point that Cameron made the actors portraying Marines read it. Then, Halo's design team practically lifted all of its human military designs from Aliens and Starship Troopers (the movie).
Here's a supplementary link that demonstrates all the parallels. Characters and story elements were lifted too: http://halo.wikia.com/wiki/List_of_references_to_Aliens_in_Halo
The voice actor for Sergeant Johnson was even instructed to mimic Apone's voice. There's one scene from Aliens where Apone's voice is indistinguishable from Sergeant Johnson.
One good example of a "full circle" is that Jungle Duke is based on Solid Snake, who is based on Snake Plissken from Escape from New York and Kyle Reese from Terminator.

I was just pointing out that concept art had an existing Joe counterpart. The Jeeps changed in appearance slightly depending on the episode and the "tactical" role they would play in it before always being blown up, run off the road, or driven into a body of water, just like the police cars in the Dukes of Hazzard, their set-piece role ancestors.
The issue wasn't the vehicles...albeit they only used the Coyote thing for most of the show..it was the story and the characters...which were severally lacking...not even Michael Bay could have spiced that stuff up lol...
I'm not talking about any perceived issues with the actual story of Renegades. It was such an A-team ripoff, Stephen J Cannell should have been given a production credit. I still like it much more than many of the Sunbow episodes.

It's in one of the interviews in the special features on Terminator 2.
Wait, what? He mentioned Aliens while being interviewed for Terminator 2?
None of the designs in Aliens looked taken from anything Hasbro had out in 1985/86. Cameron heavily borrowed from the Vietnam War and Starship Troopers(the book). He basically had his art department cannibalize whatever military models which the Apache was among them.

Yep. It's in a nearly hour long interview featuring him and Arny doing separate talking head pieces about their respective careers and how they led up to T2. The longest version is on the VHS special edition T2, but the new "Skynet Edition" blu-ray has most of it, much more than previous DVD releases, which have the same interview but cut down to just a few-minute snippets.

Concept art is always so cool. Shame how much detail is lost in the translation to a toy. Bigger shame is that adults dont tend to have the imagination a child does. To have the ability to turn a less detailed toy into the the concept art in their minds eye.

You look at the potential that so many vehicles have, and then they die the death of a thousand cuts.
They cut the size- A vehicle that should be Echo class gets squeezed down to Delta, or some intermediate size just above alpha class. The result being figures that stick out of the cockpit, turret or driver seats like basketball players in a Smartcar.
They cut the detail. This speaks for itself. The Ghost Hawk 2 looks like an unfinished prototype, as if they had to rush this to production without being allowed to finish making the cockpit a two-seater, or at least giving sculptural reasoning for all of the dead space in there.
They release it in bizzarre color schemes. The POC Hiss in Cockroach Brown? The TRU Water Moccasin in Jolly ranger green and red camo? The Retailiation Hiss is Royal Blue. The Ghost Hawk 2 is lime green, with bright orange ordnance. Is there somehow a shortage of Black or Olive Drab plastic at the the factory?
They stack on lousy accessories. The Ferret becomes the "Snake Trax" with an oversize catcher claw, as if it were some sort of Jurassic Park themed repaint. The new Water Moccasin repaint now has a chunky missile launcher on the side.
It's almost as if some of these vehicles are only able to be completed three quarters of the way into preliminary sculpting and design before being seized by a bean counter who then yanks various parts off and out of the model, hot-glues a spring loaded dart launcher onto the side, and slathers it with the closest paint they can find on sale that month...

...but the Moccasin now comes the added Butt-Jammer 9000 dildo cannon! That makes it completely different.
They cut the detail. This speaks for itself. The Ghost Hawk 2 looks like an unfinished prototype, as if they had to rush this to production without being allowed to finish making the cockpit a two-seater, or at least giving sculptural reasoning for all of the dead space in there.
Hasbro vehicles of late have all had huge amounts of wasted space: the Avengers Quinjet, all the Captain America and Iron Man vehicles, etc. I guess Hasbro wants kids to imagine the vehicles actually holding figures other than the driver.
They release it in bizzarre color schemes. The POC Hiss in Cockroach Brown?
I love the brown Hiss, and that one at least makes sense; it's a drab finish that is much more likely for a real military vehicle.
The TRU Water Moccasin in Jolly ranger green and red camo?
From the air or moving in water, it has a pretty effective camo pattern. Look at Russian SU-35 paint schemes; they also look gaudy until you see them over terrain.
Is there somehow a shortage of Black or Olive Drab plastic at the the factory?
Hasbro, pressured by who knows (probably some "parents" group who don't have kids anyway), has publicly declared GI Joe to NOT be a military toy line, (really?) so they have to take every opportunity to show that the molded automatic weapons and military hardware for the line are 'just kidding.'
They stack on lousy accessories. The Ferret becomes the "Snake Trax" with an oversize catcher claw, as if it were some sort of Jurassic Park themed repaint. The new Water Moccasin repaint now has a chunky missile launcher on the side.
Giant claws and dildo launchers are evidently OK. Parent focus groups would rather have their children playing with pseudo-S&M hardware than have a quasi-realistic toy that might be imagined to kill people.

I never thought Hasbro designed anything. Despite all the videos and official material stating otherwise, I am convinced Takara does more than 98% of the design work for Transformers. And by "design", I mean conceptual and technical.

I'm not too big a fan of some of this stuff. A lot of it is just too similar to stuff from other sources (movies, games, etc).
The RHINO was already shamelessly, inspired by the Aliens APC (still love it though), but this APC is way too close to the Aliens APC.
I have similar problems with a bunch of the other. Straight-up rip-offs of Halo Hornet and Scorpion tanks. And the spider tank looks look similar to Ghost In the Shell.
I like some of the 1-man vehicle ideas, though. Like the new Fang and jetpack.
And I actually like the jeep. While in a very basic sense, it looks like Halo's Warthog, I think it's also very reminiscent of the Joe Badger. I like the really oversized wheels and think it would have made a cool new Bravo-class vehicle.
And there's so much wrong with the Ghost Hawk II, it's not even funny. Hasbro should be embarrassed by it. I hope someone at JoeCon rips into them for it.
The jeep I think was done though, back in their Sigma 6 line:

The character designs certainly translated better than the vehicle designs. Mattel's Avatar vehicles are the best modern Joe vehicles in my opinion. If James Cameron had dropped off sketches of the helicopter, the tracked vehicle and the mecha at Hasbro, who knows what colors they would have been cast out in, or which small parts would have been incorporated as embossed details on other parts. I picture the Avatar people telling Mattel or the Star Wars people telling Hasbro, "I know the supplier has a surplus of that shade of plastic right now, but it's not close enough to the control art/style guide/model sheet/whatever," whereas with GI Joe there's no reason not to say, "That shade will do perfectly fine." The need to balance cost with aesthetics is less of an issue with the figures.
I could be wrong about them choosing the cheapest colors though. For all I know the eggplant color of the Cobra Fury was a carefully considered artistic decision.
