A Meaningful Memorial Day Observance 2012

Americans around the nation take today to enjoy friends and family, remembering how much was given so we could live this day and every day in freedom. The true memorial is the nation and culture we create from their sacrifice.

May God bless our men and women protecting us today and in days past, may He comfort those who endure the pain of loss. So when peace is impossible, and our soldiers once again find themselves in harm’s way, let us remember the words of Abraham Lincoln, “Fondly do we hope, fervently do we pray, that this mighty scourge of war may speedily pass away.”

We should remember all patriots today, including those who lost their lives challenging the government and trying to make the ideals of the founding fathers real.

"Every government degenerates when trusted to the rulers of the people alone. The people themselves, therefore, are its only safe depositories."
- Thomas Jefferson

pretty nice tribute to the soldiers...ID leave out the whole ," may GOD bless .." part, as not all soldiers like to have faith that an unseen force will protect them ,Hell, if I were serving, Id like to have faith in my FELLOW SOLDIERS and MYSELF to help protect me...BUT i DO get the sentiment... hey cant please EVERYONE...lol

It's fun collecting GI Joes, and it's fun fantasizing about being in the action, but in real life, war is hell. Not that I know firsthand, but I've taken care of guys who have PTSD from seeing combat. I have several family members who are in the military and I live in a community where many of my friends and neighbors are in the military, and I have to say that I couldn't do it. So I have the utmost respect for those who are out there giving everything just to help protect us and ensure those freedoms that we enjoy daily but take for granted. Thanks to all of our service people. Happy Memorial Day everyone!

This one always makes me break down.

I don't need to re-write was has been said in this thread.

To all of our men and women who protect my right to post on this little piece of the internet, Thank You. To those who fought and won't come home, You're remembered. To those that are still fighting, You haven't been forgotten.

Thanks to all who have served, are serving, and will serve in our military! Even if you do not agree with the wars or the reason they fight, don't blame the soldier. He does his duty, and nothing else. Much respect from this tanker.

Here's to the fallen, heroes all. May they forever be remembered as the bravest of us, that gave everything to guard their Nation and Her people.

Here's to the survivors, heroes all. May we learn from their sacrifice and pray that no others must ever endure as they have.

Here's to us, their legacy. May we someday earn the future that so many have fought so hard to secure.

Here's to the Soldiers, the Sailors, the Marines and the Airmen, past, present, and future. You honor us with your service, you give us strength through your courage. To those who answered their nation's call, we salute you.

Memorial Day always makes me think about my Grampie Maillet.

He didn't die during WWII, but he was a WWII vet stationed in Stuttgart, Germany. My Mom says we was like the "Radar O'Reilly" of WWII, lol. He also worked in the Army/Navy reserves for YEARS afterward.

I miss you, Grampie!

Even though I'm English, I recognise the sentiments of this day (Remembrance Sunday is just as important to me)... especially knowing what my own Grandad went through during WW2... There for the Normandy landings, badly injured during the battle of Caen, yet he never, ever bragged or puffed himself up. A true 'hero' in a time when the word still had significance.

Thanks to all who put their lives on the line for us: We really don't appreciate you enough.

I read Captain America comics and searched for G.I. Joe toys fruitlessly. That is a great way to celebrate Memorial Day.

Saw 3 F-22s flying really low in missing man formation... they were coming from Punchbowl National Cemetery and flying back to the airbase. Pretty profound sight I must say.
