Final Thoughts
The Basic Assortment Shipwreck is a great addition to the GI Joe line-up. Fans of the original Shipwreck costume design may not be quite so keen but as an update to the original character's look this is a superb bit of work. There's no mistaking who this character is, yet the silly 80s disco trappings are nowhere to be seen. And the fact that he's got a whole Adventure Team kind of thing going on is a great nod to the line's past. This Shipwreck is as much the explorer and adventurer as he is a military man and I could see a lot of kids sending him on exploration missions to climb the coffee table. I really like that.

So much for the design. But what about the execution? Thankfully it's great. The sculpt is detailed but not fussy, the articulation is good, with nice, solid joints and although he's not packed with a lot of extras or accessories, what he does have works very well (even if he is missing Polly). Even his paint app is good. And although he doesn't have any particular stand-outs, he's definitely a figure that's more than the sum of his parts.

An absolute must-have figure and - rather surprisingly, given his relatively low profile when compared to the other Joes - my pick of the Basic Assortment.

Final Score: A

What I like is that it's one of those toys you could see yourself playing with (as a kid, I mean... ahem... ) and having a lot of fun with. Like you say, simple yet awesome. I really dig the ''man of adventure'' kind of vibe, too.

I was very surprised how much I liked Shipwreck. He along with the Officer are really the only must-haves.

And the variant looks even better. Really hope that one gets out.

Yeah, I'm not a huge Shipwreck fan (at least, I don't prefer him over the other characters) so I was pleasantly taken aback at how much I really liked this figure.

Thanks for the review!! I havent opened mine yet (havent had time). But i really like him, he is based off the DDP shipwreck, and has a little homage to the Battle Corps version with the diving mask. I also hope we get the re-colored versions.

of the ones I've found I dig Shipwreck the most. I dug out some older figures to give him a few more accessories: the life jacket from the 25th 2 pack, Polly from ROC and the hook from Arctic Shipwreck. Looks great especially with the Retaliation 3 pack beachhead and POC Stalker since they have the same basic frame.

Thanks guys - I don't read the comics (heresy, I know!) so I had no idea this was Hasbro's take on the look. I've since updated the Review to point this out.

I really like this one with one exception. They did not paint the neck. I went ahead and painted mine and it makes an already good figure great.

Yeah, that was one point I didn't like but to be honest, I've got him on my shelf angled in such a way that you can't see it. Out of sight, out of mind. :)

ad been considering getting the Renegades Duke and stripping off the excess battle armor and the knee pads and filling in the knees. In that way I could have a generic man-on-on-the-street character who could be good, bad or just a nameless victim to Cobra's nefarious schemes. The legs form Rene Duke are the ones on Shipwreck and that is part of what helped kick him up over the top. I occasionally get irritated that most Joes wear boots.

Is that weird?

I'd take it a stage further and get one of the cases and fill it with weapons and stuff, so he could be a secret agent/assassin-type.

I'm seriously thinking about getting this figure and finding a suitable head to make Torpedo to hang out with my 25th Wet-Suit.

Heck, with some webgear and a new head he could be a good Topside as well!

That's one thing about the DG figures - there are so many customisation options, even for somebody as useless as me!
