View Full Version : Figures Retaliation HISS Cobra Commander Custom

Managed to snag a Retaliation HISS a few days ago thanks to a fellow tanker. I really like the look of CC, but am saddened by, well just about everything else about him.
Was waiting for glue and paint on another project to dry and threw this rough draft together for an articulated version....parts very subject to change.
I didn't have many figures readily available to pull apart at the time but I'm not 100% dissatisfied with this first try. Of course I plan on using green stuff to mold stuff to the arms and legs to closer match.
I'm also thinking the removable armor for the 25th HISS driver may be able to be cut down and added to, to closer resemble the CC's chest and shoulder armor/pads.
Any suggestions on other figures' parts or methods for further customizing this guy would be greatly appreciated as this is my first true serious custom 3.75" figure.

Note: More progress pics can be seen throughout this thread.
Also, for anyone who wants to swap the working treads from a 30th/Crimson HISS tank to the Retaliation version, I'll be posting a psuedo tutorial and pics in a separate post. Thanks for reading.

This just shows how good a figure this COULD have been...its assinine such new tooling is wasted on a piece of shit figure like this retaliation driver...you have made a decent attempt...however it will take nothing short of fully cutting that 5pt articulated figure into pieces, casting each piece and then creating joints for each part and putting it back togther again before i would be satisified with it..lol

I'm just not that good at casting to even attempt that, and sadly, I can be a perfectionist as well and am starting to foresee quite some time sanding and shaping Green Stuff in attempt to get the same looking result.
It's no wonder I have so many unfinished projects, some just needing paint, but they almost never seem 'finished' enough for paint.

So Hasbro done and went and made a super awesome Battle Armor CC and gave him 80's Star Wars 5 point articulation... I knew of this but seeing your pic really showed me how f'ed this figure is. Not cause it totally sucks but what could have been a super choice figure!!! If he came fully articulated they would have sold through the roof cuase everyone would have needed that CC version... Now? No thanks I'll pass... Keep working but agreed with the statement above, GIVE ME THIS CC WITH PROPER ARTICULATION!!!

I am the same way. I got tons of unfinished stuff, mainly cause I still cant paint the friken eyes worth a damn lol...got so many awesome head casts and such..they jusy never come out right and I get frustrated and they remain incomplete...

Here's my Suggestions,
Chest Armor -Wraith Armor with a POC Firefly Landmine in the center
Right Lower Arm-Wraith lower arm with laser blaster
Left Lower Arm, Techno Viper Lower arm and modify the rectangle piece into a computer screen, see my Modern Breaker below for Example. Great Job BTW.

Thanks! I was thinking about using Wraith parts, but didn't have one within reach to pull apart at the time. I did have a spare Techno viper and almost used a lower arm for that same reason, I may still go back to that, figured I'd try how the SciFi arm would look
Your Breaker looks quite badass!

it matches the look.

I didn't even think of this guy. I think I only have 1 sealed, so that won't work. I'll check my nearest comic/used toy shop to see if I can get a loose one on the cheap to try it out.

Been focusing on the HISS so much I nearly neglected the good ol' Commander.
So I liked the idea that was mentioned of using 25th Wraith's armor. I haven't modified it yet, but so far I like where it's going and thank the suggestor. The collar definitely needs to be trimmed first of all, but I think with some Green Stuff putty and some patience it can look good.
I also decided to try swapping the upper legs I had with that of the Wraith, not sure if I like it better yet but figured I'd show that too.

Been working on the Hiss, which is just about done, as can be seen in my other thread. Was just killing some time before going to a birthday party and decided to do a lil work to CC.
Added Green Stuff to one arm which will be the arm computer and some on the opposite leg, to mimic the screen thing on the original leg. Also started on making the gun for the other arm.
The last thing I did was carefully carved off a layer of the collar of the Wraith armor. Still need to take off a lil more, but I like where it's going:

looks about a billion times better than the fugly crap all these guys are clamoring to get in blue/black, whatever the perceived "rarer" one is at the moment. who cares?
but back to your guy...I think the lower legs are the elephant in the room. need to be more mechanical. arctic destro or resolute roadblock might look more futuristicy. either way you're on the right track.

I have both versions of that CC, was more disappointed than expected after opening him. For the price hike on the figs and the lesser quality on the vehicles/drivers you'd think they'd do something, anything better than what we got. But I digress.
I agree on the legs, been trying different ones based on what I have loose. For now, going to try Green Stuff on the legs and some dremeling, exacto work and sanding to see how that comes out. If no luck, I'll be checking the needs/haves thread.
Love your sig btw, can't wait for the new season.

Man if I am looking at that right you blew through a lot of good figures to make that thing.....
Hazard Viper
Sci Fi
Wraith
Hiss Driver
Not sure who the torso is from. Personally I like the Hiss CC as a stand alone figure, if I were just to display it. But every now and then i get an itch to play with my toys and the articulation poses a problem.
Your figure looks good, but I think the price would have been a tad too high for me to go this route. But hell man, I can't wait to see it finished.

I've managed to get deals via case buying, clearance sales and mismarked pegs mixed with some smooth talking so didn't spend nearly as much for those as you might think. Plus, they were all already open and ended up making space for other figs I've wanted to put up on display. All these figs have sealed dups at my place though.
The torso is from RoC CC, grabbed a few of him for $2 each at a TJMaxx and my open one was already loose in the torso joint so seemed ripe for the cutting.
Glad you're digging him so far. Any parts I don't use that aren't modified will likely go back to their original figs. I keep changing around parts as I find more loose figs I don't mind taking apart.
Should have some kind of noticable update sometime tomorrow.

The black paint I used on the left arm and torso was Krylon for plastics. It works really well on vehicles and styrene but I think I'm missing something on figures...this is my first afterall.
Anyone know a better way to paint figure parts, especially around joints? I'm sure after a lot of trial and error I can figure out how to stop paint rub there but would kinda prefer to skip all that if people already know how.
Also, redid the work on the right leg for the screen thing, much happier. Have an idea to match the thigh to the CC and hope to post pics by morning.

Ok....so that last mentioned update never happened...apologies to anyone actually following this thread.
Got caught up on a few vehicle customs(2 Hiss tanks and a Snow Cat, 1 of those Hiss's my first commission).
Would prefer not to ruin another Hazard Viper and Sci-Fi(though I do have a couple extras of each sealed), so I am going to take the drastic step of trying to strip the spray paint off the upper Hazard Viper and lower Sci Fi arm by soaking them in brake fluid then carefully scrubbing. Rubbing alcohol may work, but it would take forever. We'll see.
By this time next week, I promise to have a noticeable update this time. I feel bad for neglecting this guy since my first Hiss is done and is still missing it's driver.

Small update: Finally went with TV upper arms and lower left arm like was previously suggested. Should've done that in the first place but hey, I'm learning.
Started swapping the lower legs yet again, this time from a RoC viper but keeping Sci-Fi's foot as with a lil work, will be pretty damn close to the original. Throwing around the idea of modding IG's leg armor to mimic the Retaliation CC, still not sure though.
Also added more work to the armor, once dry, I'll trim to better emulate the original.
Here's a few pics of what i got done today, I'll know better if I will keep the current parts after I do some painting...the right way this time:

A bit more trimming, green stuff and some primer to better see what needs to be tweaked, and I think the armor is shaping up nicely. Before and after last trim:

Spent a bunch of time whittling down the joints of the arms to avoid paint rub. I've checked the main how-to's and tutorials, but still haven't found the best way to make them look nice without 5 tries of painting, drying, moving, paint rub, sanding, cutting, re painting etc...
May have been impatient of me, but the primer on everything but the joints of both arms was dry so I put a light coat of black on. Thinking may have needed to dip the brush in water a lil more for a lighter first coat, but again, I'm still learning this stuff:

For anyone following, never got to that last mentioned update...got caught up packing for vacay the following morning.
Anyway, now that I'm home and back to work on this stuff, figured I'd post some updates. The first 2 just show some gray priming from before my trip...more because it was quick to do and had laundry going.
The rest are from the last couple days, including some more finish work on the armor. Still need a couple more coats of aluminum on the arm gun, but had to roughly put it together to see how the whole arm looks...and I'm quite happy.
Also, finally added those lil doodads you see in white.

Armor still needs some finishing touches to clean it up, but ended up going ahead with paint to see how it will eventually look. First up is the black undercoat, seems silver type colors show up better on a black background versus lighter:

Lil more progress on the driver for my own custom Hiss. Funny...my personal Retaliation Hiss is finished and my first commissioned figure is finished, but both are missing their other component. Oh well, going to have to rectify that sooner than later.
Spent a few hours on CC's right leg. Really never realized how much a pita 'sculpting' can be. Threw on a quick coat of black, more to show me where I need to sand and fill in, but also to see how it really looks. Well, here's where's I'm at with him at this point:

Not much an update as many hours today were spent filing, sanding and painting the legs. Got the other leg's first coat of paint on and tomorrow will be able to tell where needs to be filled in and/or sanded more. Again, wow, didn't realize how time consuming this aspect would be:

Also not pictured is the arm communicator thing... After printing a couple sheets of waterslide decals, found out either my printer or Photoshop won't print white(comes out clear every time) so had to go ahead and paint at least the keypad section white(needs 1 more coat) and the decal should be ok looking. Still not 100% sure what to use for the screen section but my just cut something from a spare Joe sticker sheet or paint it a custom color.

Got way more done than what I expected on this guy today.
First up, armor just about done now. Likely will only do a coat or two of clear now that the decal is on:

Next is the left arm. Finally got a good white base coat to be able to apply my keypad:

Forgot to take a pic after applying my decal, but before I painted the area to the immediate left of the keypad black:

Finally decided on what existing sticker to use for the arm screen, got this from a Hiss sheet I had already picked off of. And found out the hard way my printer can't do 4mm symbols with much clarity, so I grabbed the tiny Cobra symbol from the same sticker as the screen:

And lastly for the night, got the legs as done as I think before final paint apps. Multple hours of sanding over the last week and simply don't want to sand these legs another moment...especially after the 600 grit sanding to get the final sheen before slapping on another coat of black:

Got more work done on the legs. Did some touch up painting and now all they need is clear:

Not pictured are the feet, which got their 2nd and final coat of black. Some detail painting and clear coat and those are done as well.
