Hello Floks,

As part of this massive project I have taken on (USS Flagg Carrier Strike Group), I have been working on some support projects while I am gathering the resorces for my USS Flagg update/ upgrade project. This thread will showcase the pieces that I am working on as part of my support accessories and crew.

First up is my new kit I designed to create the USS Flagg Deck Crew. Over at the Terrordrome forums, I came across a custom done by Dr Joe Justice using the ROC Breaker body and vest, and Tripwire head. It look fantastic but I wanted to take it to the next level. I sculpted a new head fashioned off of the Navy deck crew helmet with the hearing protection and gogles, making it a generic/ clone for a deck crewman. I plan on making an African-American version of this design. I also sculpted a new vest, a Navy MK1 life preserver vest. The vest is flexable and removable thanks to the new product from Smoothon, Task 16. The rest of the figure is a mold and cast of the ROC Breaker figure with an addition of the ROC Sgt Stone glove hands. I added a optional mic that when drilled a hole into the side of the hearing protection, I can plug it in and swivil up and down and also reverse it to the other side for veriations. As part of my research on deck crewmen, I notice that the tousers part varied from crewman to crewman. Some had them bloused (like what I have right now) while others hand straight leg pants. As a veriation to this kit, I plan on molding and casting Shipwreck (the 5 pack version) and use his legs sculpt.

At this point, I am ready to do some painting. On the red shirt, I already started to paint the pants blue to match the blue plastic pieces. During the casting, some air bubbles did not get crushed in the preasure pot, so I had to fill them with some Aves Fixit Sculpt. The yellow one you can see the casted color pieces that makes this kit.

I do have a question for our active duty Navy personel on the 'Tank here, With the Navy introducing the new NWU's, are the deck crew going to start using them and tighten up the uniformity across the deck crew?

OK, time for pics:

One more quick update for tonight, I am adding the USS Flagg Soft Cap. This piece is removable so just about any head can wear it and become part of the USS Flagg crew. The name patch is sculpted detail which includes the USS Flagg name, the ship profile, and the CVN 99. I have to say this was the hardest and smallest detail sculpting I have done to date. I painted the letters and the ship to help bring out the details.

Here are some pics:

Hey folks,

First I would like to thank everyone who has posted a commnet and really glad to hear back from those who have served on those mighty decks. I feel this is a kit that is long over due. To me, I love all the details that make up a great dio or playset. So I will be consentrating on those items that may be overlooked by the major companies. Also, since Big H has said that we would never see the likes of this scale playset ever again, I figure it's fair game to make support pieces and figures for a playset that will never be made again.

To address the issue of sale of these kits, I have not worked out the logistics yet. I am not set up here to handle production of resin kits on the same scale as with Slayer Designs Studio. I did make a master copy of each kit for the event if I needed to make a new mold when the current ones break down. I will post here when I secured a means to get these out to you all.

OK, now I need your help! I just secured the pieces for the next project accessory, but it was missing two parts. Can anyone help by letting me "barrow" the stearing wheel and antenna from the "Weapons Transport" vehicle so I can make a mold of them. In return I will send back the original pieces plus I will throw in 2 casts of the USS Flagg soft cap, painted by me. If you can help, please pm. Thanks.

In the pot now is the white shirt version. I should have a pic up soon as it's put together.

Thank you all for the support.

Not a problem, I welcome any discussion from those who were there on the real deal decks. Any insight in helping these pieces be as accurite as possible will be a great service to me and other members in the community. I was an Army Sgt, so I am basing alot of this on documentories and images searches on the net. Can anyone give us insight on the difference trousers usage by the crew? I have seen woodland camo, navy blue bloused and unbloused, tan, brown and even the newer NWUs.

Well while my time on ship all the navy deck hands had the basic woodland trousers. The yellow CPO had khaki slacks.

Thanks for the comments so far.

Now for some further details about the picture.

I need to start off by saying that the guy on the far right is a purple shirt fuel crewman. For some reason the color came out more blue than the corect shade of light purple. The figures are still in a state of WIP at the moment, still need to paint some of the lower legs to match the thigh and knee parts. the blue shirt crewman is sitting because the legs parts came out too rubberly than the more firm plastic it should have been, must have had the mix ratio wrong that day. But he was not a total loss, I need a sitting driver for my upcoming tow vehicle anyways so he was not a total waste of resin. I will cast a second blue shirt to have standing on the flight deck.

That's it for now, I look forward to hear more from you all. Thanks for stopping by.

Do you have any sugestions uniforms for the sailors? If I understand correctly, the older light blue shirt and darker trousers are being replaced with the newer NWU. Otherwise, for an older sailor crew uniform, a bunch of shipwreck figures with new heads and those USS Flagg hats I made should do the trick. Any ideas on long sleeve arms that would work with those types of shirts? I can mold and cast the half rolled to forarm shirt for some, but others would need a full sleeves down version. But if none were made by Hasbro already, then I could sculpt a new type of sleeve arms for the Shipwreck body.

Viper6
06-04-2012, 10:52 AM
id like a dozen or so sailor figures similar to shipwreck, different head, same hat and arah style o ring if possible. but ME is fine too, then we need an updated keel haul and maybe some tan suited officers.

Jedi_Master_Ben
06-04-2012, 11:07 AM
I did cast the 5 pack Shipwreck head so I can make that hat usable on other cast heads, just needed to be glued on (or in some cases, they are removable). I have another of those Shipwrecks coming from China for the purpose so I can dismantal and mold and cast other sailors combinations. I also plan to mold and cast the 25th body style as well so there would be more combinations of parts to choose from. Here lets break down a working list of sailor uniforms that need to be done:

* Officer Khakis short and long sleeve
* Navy Overall uniform
* Enlisted dress whites

Is there anything I left out?

A CSG huh? Very ambitious. Do you have an idea for the Air Boss yet?

After watching the documentary series called "Carrier" I have been thinking about the Air Boss possition. To me, it seems the admiral's chair should be the Air Boss chair looking over the flight deck operations. From the documentary, the Air Boss was wearing a turtle neck with the possition painted on his back. Is there another uniform to consider for that person?

Hey everyone,

I took a break over the holidays and was out of state (back to CA) and when I got back, I got caught up in my other obsession, 1/18th scale Movieverse Transformers project. In short, came across a dio here on Hisstank that used an oversized KO Optimus Prime (ROTF version). I aquired that Optimus Prime along with the oversized Ironhide and Megatron and made a Cliffjumper custom from a Battle Ops Bumblebee. After that project was over, I got back to working on the USS Flagg restoration and adding more crew members.

Since my last update, I made the following:

-Admiral Keelhaul with new sculpt head
-Officers: Captian, XO, female officer, and Doctor
- Male and Female light blue shirt dark blue pants version sailors
- Male and Female dark blue shirt dark blue pants version sailors
- Female Deck Crew
- Shore Patrol (SP) wearing Navy NWU with 8 point hats
- Marines wearing new digital patern uniform (same print design as the ROC jungle Ripcord figure)

As for the USS Flagg restoration, I ordered a set of decals from Ruben. I also purchased most of the parts to the Mast, still need the mast cap and the NV caps. But the coolest piece I got in was a Tonka Coast Guard Rescue helicopter that looks like a Sea Knight Helicopter (thanks to Zoomie2001 for showcasing it in his thread). It fits one Joe figure in the cockpit and there is room to fit inside like Lifeline's backboard and cargo. I am going to repaint it to be a Navy Sea Knight, just need an idea of squadron stickers for it, any ideas you guys would like to chime in on? Here are some pics that I took before the break and I will get some more up in the next day or so.

Keel Haul, Deck Hands, and an actual Captain for the Flagg. Keel Haul would be in charge of an entire fleet of ships, not just the Flagg. The Flagg would still have it's own Captain and First Officer

I totally agree. I learned a lot watching the Carrier series on Netflix and it really inspired the work I have been putting into these. I want to try and stay true to a real carrier diorama (with in reason).

At this time I am still looking for a casting company to carry these. I am not set up to do any production at the level like SDS did. I will post something here as soon as something has been arranged.

Ok, on with the latest pictures and updates.

First I have to say that I have changed out my lighting in my studio and I have better lighting over the USS Flagg for better pictures. Also, I picked up 2 4ft folding tables from Wal-Mart to display the Flagg on. I am glad to get this off the floor. Now keep in mind, this is still a work in progress.

First up are some pictures of the USS Flagg Command Staff:

From left to right, Custom Admiral Keelhaul, The Captain, The XO, Female Officer, The Doctor. The admiral is made using an original sculpt head, Gen Hawk torso and arms and the legs from my Agent Shades figure I made for SDS. The Captain and the XO and the Doctor are made from cast copy of the Shipwreck torso and arms, Agent Shades Legs, and head cast from SDS (XO head is a cast of ROC Ripcord). The Female Officer is made from an original torso and arm sculpt modeled after the Shipwreck torso, Thighs are original sculpt and lower legs are Agent Shades. The head is from Mon Mothma. The two command hats are modified Flagg hats with gold leaf added.

The next picture shows the Air Boss:

The Air Boss is made from cast of the ROC Breaker torso and arms, Legs from Agent Shades, and head cast from SDS. Headset is from a cast head from SDS that the head was dremeled leaving the headset.

Next up are the dark blue work uniform sailors:

http://www.hisstank.com/forum/attachment.php?attachmentid=129730&stc=1&d=1370575060

The males are a mix of cast Shipwreck body and SDS heads and the unpainted male is sporting a long sleeve arms cast of the 25th Duke arms. The unpainted female sailor is made using the original sculpt torso, arms , thighs and head and the lower legs cast of the first 25th Shipwreck figure.

Next up is the new Female Deck Crewman:

http://www.hisstank.com/forum/attachment.php?attachmentid=129731&stc=1&d=1370575060

This figure sports two original female heads sculpts (Caucasian (not shown) and African American), an all new female torso sculpt, modeled after the ROC Breaker, cast ROC Scarlett arms and ROC Breaker legs. The figure stands shorter than the Male Deck Crewman which makes easy to identify the females on the flight deck. The life vest is the same sculpt as the male version. I plan on making each version (Caucasian and African American) in each color plus an additional male figure in each color for a total of 5 crewmen for each area. (I need to get some more plastic resin)

Next up is touch up paint Job on my Valkyrie female Pilot:

http://www.hisstank.com/forum/attachment.php?attachmentid=129732&stc=1&d=1370575060

I did not like the paint job on the face the first time and also the uniform did not look right. I painted her more like the ROC Wild Bill figure and repainted the face. I also reposition the hair bun and lower it so the helmet will fit. I still need to find a face mask for the helmet. I am happy with the results now.

Next up are the Marine detachment assigned to the Flagg:

http://www.hisstank.com/forum/attachment.php?attachmentid=129733&stc=1&d=1370575060

This was more of a request from the comments. I started with my favorite movie Marine, Thomas Gunny Highway. I took the SDS Clint head and dremeled and sculpted a high and tight hair cut. I then took a cast of my Gung Ho sculpt I did for SDS and made the hat removable. The torso and legs and shirt tail are from a cast of the ROC Zartan/ MP figure and the arms from cast of ROC Sgt Stone. The other Marine is made with a cast of the 30th anv Ripcord and the same hat and body cast of Gunny Highway. The paint pattern was a tough one to decide on, half of me wanted the 80's woodland pattern like in Hartbreak Ridge, while the other half wanted the new digital pattern. In the end, I liked the ROC Jungle Ripcord pattern and tried to mimic it on the marines. I plan on casting 3 more Marines.

Next up is a picture of my work in progress Shore Patrol:

http://www.hisstank.com/forum/attachment.php?attachmentid=129734&stc=1&d=1370575060

This was a byproduct of the Marine casting. This is a straight up cast of the ROC Zartan/ MP figure with heads from SDS and cast Marine hats with the Marine logo removed. I figure I have to have someone go get Shipwreck out of the bars and haul him back to the ship. I would like to get a cast of Law's vest and accessories for these guys. I plan on painting them the new Navy NWU pattern similar to what I did with the Marines.

The last two pictures are showing off my new Sea Knight vehicle (Tonka Cost Guard Rescue helicopter):

I plan on repainting it Navy grey and get some custom stickers for it. I would like to gut it and make the cockpit a 2 seater. I like the electronics on this, the moving rotors bring the playset to life in a way. Also, in one of the pics, you can see the SMO figure attending to the wounded that Lifeline brought in.

That's it for tonight. As you can see a lot more needs to be done. I just got in the mail the stickers from Ruben so I will be busy this weekend for sure. I now open the floor for comments. Thanks again for the support and see you in the next update.
