Something similar happened to me back in 2002 I think it was... one of my Uncles died and me and my cousin were in put in charge of possessions detail. My Uncle must have had like... idk... bazillion VHS and laser discs... which was hard to get rid of even back then. LOL. We just ended up dumping like 90% of the stuff and fixing up the whole area... my Uncle was always cool to us though, so we didn't mind the extra work.
And you just know 50 years from now somewhere a young man will jack his brain directly into the 'net and send a thread post via brain wave signals, "uncle died and left me over 1000 Joes...lol".

Hold tight, maybe he left another relative a time machine. You could team up and go back in time to enjoy them.
It's cool that he thought of you. If he had that many tapes, he probably really liked them. That says a lot.

I traded my entire VHS collection (over 200 cassettes) for two DVD's- Rocky Horror Collectors edition & Gummo.
True story.
Sorry to hear about your uncle, maybe he may have a few rare ones in there, otherwise I say you listen to CT and build a fort.

Do what most people seem to do. Rent space in a flea market/antique mall and price each vhs at $5 to $10 as if they are some sort of collectible. then watch them collect dust.

Vintage porn comes to mind. Other than that, even if he has a movie that has not been released in any digital format the degradation of them probably will make them not worth very much in the end.

Sorry to hear about your uncle.
My wife and I have been together for nearly 15 years now. Last summer we decided that after 3 moves and 10 years living in the same house it was time to have our first yard sale. We had like 100 VHS tapes and probably 80 cassettes combined. We put them all on a table, sideways, and put $1 on the cassettes, $2-$5 on the VHS depending on what it was (boxed sets, etc). I shit you not, ALL of them except like 3 cassettes and 1, count it ONE VHS sold. Shit, my wife had Madonna, Bobby Brown, Whitney Houston and Pointer Sister cassettes from when she was like 12 still....AND THEY ALL SOLD!!!!! The only VHS that didnt sell, guess???????
The Star Wars gold boxed set that cost me like $50 bucks in 1998. I had a $5 dollar tag on it and only had a handful of people look at it.

They make excellent shelf builders for your collection. Stagger stack them and you not only have a solid black wall of shelving, the weight of those vhs tapes helps to stabilize your shelves so they don't shake much if you accidently bump into them saving your figures from falling over. I've picked up about 2000 of those suckers at garage sales for this exact purpose.
got Uncle Buck or Bio-Dome?

Save them and give them to your brother or sisters kids when you die :)
some old movies have never made it to dvd. You may have "rare" vhs tapes.
Let it be- the film. By the beatles saw one short run on vhs and has been out of print since like 1980. If you have it you could sell it for tens of dollars. Not tons. $10's of dollars.

You can also line them up like dominoes and start a cascade.

You should use the pay it forward thread to get rid of them.

+1 for using the phrase "10's of dollars"
BTW, we really do need to see some kind of pic of all those tapes.

^ Not too many people still have a working VCR though I bet. I only have one VCR that still works and only because it is a VCR/DVD combo player. And the only VHS tapes I have are old Disney cartoons... like really old... like Goofy Sports... man that one is a classic. LOL.

Seperate them by Genre and write them down! Make a list of ALL titles. Sci Fi, Horror, Actions & Comedies ALWAYS sell. Even if they bring in a buck apiece, these are the first flicks that will go.
You could also trade them at some places. I know of a Used Record/VHS/DVD place that will take popular titles in trade if they're in good condition!
Yard Sale or Flea Market - even if you go to a flea market to look around, look for VHS dealers. My fave one here in Fl has one and she buys movies from me all the time, again, she only gives a quarter or 50 cents apiece, but it adds up!
Craigslist 'em!
Good luck!
A friend of mine is looking for VHS tapes for a project.....

No doubt. Even if you get $0.50 a piece you'd probably be looking to get at least several hundred dollars when all the of the good ones are sold.

I say craigslist or tag sale. Last year we had a multi-family tag sale and my giant box of movies that I had in storage went for 40$ in no time flat. I would say there were maybe 80 of them, so when the guy asked me how much they were each, I just said 40$ and you can take them all, and the tote their in.

You should keep a couple handy in case you need an excuse to leave someplace you don't want to be. If they ask you where you are going you can simply say, "I have to go return some video tapes." :D

First off sorry to hear about your Uncle.
Second, check around for Used DVD/Video game stores. We had a new used video game/dvd store open up. They buy VHS tapes for 75 cents to $1.00 each. Depending which VHS tapes (original GodFather, Star Wars) could go for $5-6.
Heck, 1000 VHS tapes at 75 cents each is $750.00 8-)
