View Full Version : What You Need to Know for Joecon

Many of you people reading this, will be experiencing your first Joecon, I am writing this guide in order to help you acclimate to what you need for Joecon, or most Fan conventions:

1) Pack Light

many people overpack for cons because the mix up Con.. with vacations. usually the forget to factor in several point of conventions:

a) convention swag

you will be getting con sets, vehicles, figures and whatever other swag you get from con, let alone collectibles like signed items or posters that have to be packed carefully. Yes you can ship them from the con, but the shipping service is usually much more expensive than USPS, and you have until Saturday morning at noon to utilize USPS.

b) types of clothing

there's a good chance with Joecon activities, you wont have the opportunely (unless you make time) to do extra activities like swimming, dressing formal, watching DVDs or playing video games. I have made the mistake of bringing such things to Joecon (even once bringing my playstation 2) and NEVER using them. Between Con activities, hanging with friends, and eventually sleeping, you probably wont have time for anything.

also keep in mind local weather. I remember several people who live in the south being totally unprepared for New England weather at the Rhode Island Con. Likewise when it was snowing in Boston before I flew out to the 80 degree weather in Florida last year. Check the weather online before you pack

...keep in mind the last paragraph becomes completely moot if you are traveling with children or a wife/ girlfriend.

c) AIrline fees

the more you pack the heavier your bag will be, and the baggage fees go up over 50 lbs.

basically if you are staying JUST for con, you only need 4 outfits (two of which are the clothes you are traveling to/from in) and whatever costume/ custom/ trade fodder you decide to bring.

2) Incidentals

these are the things you MUST bring:

a) Food Money

Ive seen several people run out of money buying joes and they have nothing to eat.

b) Aspirin/ Vitamin Pills/ Energy drinks

YOU WILL LOSE A LOT OF SLEEP!!! Most con activities start as early as 8:30/ 9 am and don't end until well after 11 (even later if you are hanging with Joebros. so get your sleep early, and make sure you have medicine or energy drinks to keep you sprilley! Also you will be on your feet for extended periods of time, Aspirin helps keep the aches and pains away, and aspirin combined with the vitamin pill and Revive Vitamin water, helps fight hangovers.

c) emergency money

you never know if you have an emergency (flat on the way to con, spend all your cash in the strip club, bail money) so factor in some extra cash... which brings me to...

d) CASH IS KING

a lot of vendors will not have credit card machines, and unless you want to wait in lines at the ATM, its better to have at least a third to half your money in cash to speed up transactions.

e) shipping boxes

the Shipping company on site will most likely charge you for boxes and packing materials, so it may be an idea to bring your own. also remember The USPS provides Priority mail boxes for FREE, and the flat rate box will ship anything that fits in the box for 9 bucks.

3) DEODORANT

THERE IS NO EXCUSE WHY YOU SHOULD BE STINKY!

Between soap/ deodorant and Axe body spray.. Un funk yourself!!!

4) Room to room trading

usually people trade from room to room by posting what you have brought with you via a posting board provided by the club. however you should bring the stuff you KNOW will be sold or traded, so you dont have to drag it back.

5) Notebook or address book

unless you are a recluse or a total douchbag, you WILL make new friends at Joecon, so its good to have an address book or notebook to write down screen names, addresses, phone numbers Etc.

6) Patience

there are times lines will be long, so be patient, and feel free to talk to the people around you.

7) No Board Angst

there's a big difference between talking smack on a board about someone 1000 miles away under an assumed name, and saying the same thing when they are in your face. it also makes you look like a bigger douche. leave the board angst at home.I personally get tired of people coming to Joecon with the "This Board Sucks"attitude, when they a) haven't been to that board in months, and b) have no idea the person you're telling it to is a member of that board. Especially when there are wonderful human beings on every board.

...leave the chip on your shoulder at home.

8) Make a List

Make sure you make an itemized list of EXACTLY what you are looking for. whether it be figures, vehicles, parts or random things for customs, its sometimes easier to make a list not just for yourself, but also for people you are buying/ trading for. This list can guide you in your buying process, and also be posted up on the room to room trading board.

9) Don't be Afraid to Bargain

it is possible to haggle and bargain with vendors. especially the ones who are already going to highball some items (expect a renegades Storm Shadow to match the prices on ebay). Especially as the con progresses, By Sunday afternoon some vendors wont turn away reasonable offers.

10) YOU MUST VISIT MARAUDER JOHN

there are certain vendors who are at Joecon constantly that have great deals. Joearmory, Smalljoes, Broken Arrow Toys, ... but by far the greatest guy out there is Marauder John, the Gun Runner!

He has been selling 1:18th scale guns for 7 years now, and they are awesome products! the prices are great, and most of all, Marauder John himself is the coolest person you will ever get to meet!!!

11) Unofficial Activities

there are several activities that are NOT on the Con brochure because they are unofficial and are run by the Fans. These are the perfect opportunely to make friends and meet people from your favorite boards and Other boards you are unfamiliar with. The People running these events are Friendly people (for the most part) and will welcome you to join:

a) After Registration Dinner

Usually after every con we go to a local spot for dinner. what started as a small group of friends from Joebattleines has evolved into a Multi board, multu collector event! (Rhode Island con we had 54 people) great opportunely to meet people, make friends, and hang out! No one is ever turned away, and all are welcome to come with us!

b) Crappy Figure Brigade Meeting

Run by our Illustrious President Card, the Crappy figure brigade is a group where we get together and have fun while Honoring the WORST that G.I.Joe has provided us. its a fun way to make fun of the silliness of G.I.Joe while making friends (and drinking). we also take a Joecon pic every year after the meeting. No one is turned away and we welcome all!

c) Late Night Hang outs

usually people group up and hang out in the Hotel lobby, or in rooms,... this is also an opportunity to introduce yourself to others, make friends, and otherwise mingle not the Joe community. Very seldom are people complete jerks at Joecon (some are..) so just walk up, introduce yourself, and join the conversation!

you can order a homefront set yourself and they will ship it to you after con. any extras or exclusives you need a friend who is going (preferably someone with no personal drama) to pick up exclusives for you

Seems like an inside story. Did a racist douchebag steal a bunch of money from Tom? That's fucked on so many levels.

I've got a question some veterans could easily answer…so here it goes:

The Con is June 28 - July 1…How should I schedule a flight? Wed night? Early or late Thursday? When does the Con officially end on Sunday? Should I schedule a late flight Sunday or just leave when I check out of the hotel?

Commander,

It depends on what choiced you make during registration, my friend! : )

If you get a Golden Ticket then be at the convention hotel by around 5 Wednesday (they will tell you a time, but that's just a 'safe' timeline)

If you just attend as a regular attendee, Thursday morning or early afternoon should be just fine.

Tom

Edit- Also, the way I've done it in the past is that since hotels usually have you check out before the afternoon, just leave your room as you would and spend a few hours at the convention before you leave for your flight. Sunday is mostly a non-day except for the announcement of who won the free trip for next years convention. If you're not a gambler, then you can just leave any time. The meat of the thing are Friday and Saturday. : )

no...

people have brought board angst and personal issues to Joecon with them , causing problems. We are trying to prevent the Violence that happened over at Botcon (which is why we have police details at con now) or worse, at SDCC (someone got stabbed). we are (as Cedric the entertainer said) Grown ass men. Fights at a convention???!!!

People STILL make snide comments about Hisstank members or the site itself, or they isolate themselves by ...well... being Douchbags. They act unfriendly, unwelcome to new people, and generally show the Bad side of collecting. To make it even worse these are the people who badmouth the club, Hasbro, and joe product./. yet show up at Joecon anyway...

which is like complaining that McDonalds sucks... yet you continue to eat there...
and Unfortunately.. there ARE one or two people who show up at Joecon who have white sheets in their closet.

official con is Thursday 6 pm to Sunday 3:30 pm.

if you go for the customizing class or tours, then you can pick up your sets on Wednesday at 5pm. Most people usually fly out during Sunday, others leave Monday morning. Some people make a whole vacation out of it ans stay a whole week.

...its up to you.

Commander,

It MIGHT behoove you to find a friend you REALLY trust who CAN make it Wednesday and pay for their Golden Ticket. That way they can be there on Wed to pick up the exclusives they'll allow said ticket holders to buy early. Now, that could be a risky thing (The Joe community has had it's share of unreliable convention attendees not coming through for their friends) but if you have a long term Joe pal, it could work out great for both of you.

But the Golden Ticket still has it's uses Thursday and Friday, so you're still doing okay. : )

To be fair, I find it a little presumptuous to insinuate racism on anyone. It's not something you can throw around like "bitch" or "loser".

And the SDCC stabbing things wasn't exactly a stabbing. I was outside of Hall H when that happened and it was a fight where a dude with a pencil in hand tried to punch another dude but scratched the guy in the face with the follow through.

But what happened at Botcon that necessitates security? Sounds like the biggest case of nerd rage ever! Even Joecon last year when people were pissed about everything being sold out on Thursday didn't necessitate extra security. For the most part, collectors are fickle but orderly.

I'd go with "fickle but lazy," or usually "fickle but too fat to effectively start any shit." But it amounts to the same thing.

well that's one of the reasons why the smaller numbers at Joecon means after a few years everyone knows everyone else. and there is less drama.

the larger the crown, the more "strangers" are there and have a tendency to act up.

Most of the larger hotels will either let check your bags at the front desk or let you have a late check-out around 5 or so. Sometimes it is free, but expect to pay a surcharge for the late check-out.

Whatever you do, don't leave your crap laying around for the maids to destroy. Some one had this happen to them last year... Keep your room either neat and orderly if you are using the maids or live dirty and call down for extra towels when you need them...

also you can curb some expence by hitting supermarkets. aome rooms have microwaves in them. in Flordia we circumvented the high priced Disney food by hitting a walgreens and walmart and loading up on ramen noodle bowls, cheap soda and vitamin water, bread and bologna, and yogurts...

This may have been mentioned already but most hotels will check your bags (for a small fee usually a couple bucks plus tip for valet) after you've checked out. I do this a lot. Have con activities until late Sunday and 12 checkout. So checkout before con and check your bags. Then after con go and retreive your bags.

I think a lesson here for Joecon newbies is to be careful with your money. You will drop a lot of cash right off the bat if you manage to score all of the convention exclusives. That's on the first night. Once the dealer hall opens you'll feel like a kid in a Joe toy store. If you see a bargain on the first day it probably won't be there for long. But pace your spending if you plan to stay until Sunday.

1) Ask questions at Declassified Booth. Please. We are eager to
talk about what's in the booth. Make sure you grab a copy

2) Look for hidden prizes around the hotel. I start hiding them right after
con sets are handed out.
3) Don't be shy. You can walk away from con with friends for life.
4) Talk to Hasbro. Then you'll think twice about impulsive, uneducated, and rude

Make sure you are a social animal.

I met a ton of people and had a fantastic time at the 2010 JoeCon by making sure I met as many people as possible.

It worked out well and we even got into some shenanigans together.

"You're not from around here, are you boy?"

If you aren't willing to talk to people and be a silly goose, perhaps you might want to consider staying home. I can't remember much Joe related about 2010 but the crap that went on with the people I met burned a hole in my memory. I am hoping to repeat (with some exceptions) in 2012

I'm not going to JoeCon nor have I been, but this is something that I found interesting and might as well share...

A friend of mine works for Square (https://squareup.com/) and was making fun of a co-worker who emailed their entire office about him going to BotCon and he was really impressed that a lot of the vendors were using Square and other credit-card-via-iPhones/smartphone systems this year... So perhaps the JoeCon vendors will wise up by then and maybe try more payment plans like that?

Just something to think about. Also, any vendors who may read this, look into it. It wouldn't be a bad idea to at least have the app set up on your smartphones in case any vendors were to have that option.
