Hey again guys. I just wanted to show all of you the Joe my cousin found. I have searched everywhere looking for another like it and found only one. All i and even antique appraisers could find was it must have been made by the Salvation Army during WW2 and given to kids in France during the war to kind of let them know the Military was their friends. Made around 1944 or 1945. He is 16-1/2" tall and about 7" across the shoulders. His head, hands and feet are carved out of wood. I just thought you all might like to see him.

This is incredible! Could very well be the first GI Joe.

I feel like this could be front page material...

Well, I'm not sure. Info on it is very hard to find. And i mean VERY. lol. It's been dated to those two years and that's about 15, 16 years before the prototype of the 12" i think. He's cool as crap though.

Yeah. His clothes are made from old WW2 military uniforms which make him even cooler. I though you guys might appreciate him. Sure wish I had found him. LOL.

That is really cool. If it is in fact a Salvation Army toy from WWII that would be pretty cool. The fact that it says GI Joe I guess is possible. I know the term GI was first used in WWI. I want to say that GI Joe was first used ina comic book in the early '40s.

Also, that thing is scary. The bottom picture of the face is freakin' me out.

Wow, what a rare piece! You know you HAVE to name him, right!

The house he found it in had dog tags from WW2 and an old Nazi belt buckle. It must have been brought back from the war by the guy on the dog tags. GI was started in WW1. I think they added Joe to it in the second big one according to the appraisers that looked at it. A loose term to describe American soldiers. Kind of to give them a "friendly" name i guess.
Yeah, the face is a little scary. LOL. The head and helmet are one solid piece of wood carved and painted. He is definitely wild looking.

LOL. He's probably not a piece to set in the bedroom that's for sure.

He is actually my cousins. I wish he was mine. He's going to part with it i guess. I already have the add made up for him on E-Bay, but waiting on his bank info to get him going. He's going to put all that stuff on there i reckon. The buckle and the dog tags. Said he was needing money pretty bad. So i told him I'd set him up an account and get it ready for him. I guess someone else will get to actually name him. Don't think i could sell him if he was mine.

I would research the guy on the dog tags and see if he had any relatives living. Might be a nice gesture to pass them on. Might also turn up more info on this little guy.

I looked everywhere for info on him and had him appraised, but that other one is the only one i could find. The tag is actually on his back under his jacket. Right above his butt.

What do the dog tags say?

Louis Noe. I did a little research on him also. He passed away some years back. His wife died about 4 years after he did. Best that i could find out anyway.

Comparing the two it's doubtful they were carved by the same person at least. Check the carved boot seams, completely different.

Maybe airedevon knows more about this figure?

Thanks for linking it for me. That will make it easier than the way i did it.

airdevon? I sure would like to find out some more info on him. I talked to the other guy that has one and have been keeping him up to date as to what i find. If he knows something, that sure would be nice.

I looked him up and all i could find was he passed away. His wife's name is on there also. He actually moved here from France, which would make sense, and was in the U.S. Army. He and his wife passed away quite a few years back. I couldn't find any children or other relatives. I just found his and her obituary. You never can find what your looking for on Google. It always pulls up 4zillion something close. If it was mine, I'd rather the guy or his kids/ have it. I wouldn't sell it myself.

The new seller status of your cousin may scare some bidders away or at least keep bidding lower than might be possible.

I thought about that. It's had right at 20 views and has 3 watchers at the moment. I had it appraised for him, but there hasn't been any sold to go by, so that was about useless. It was still up there pretty high.

Nor would I. That's a very cool piece of history right there that reflects more of the human side of such a terrible period in time.

All we could find was the Salvation army deal, so they probably where made by a group or something like that. Info on them is just ridiculously few and far between. That was one thing the appraiser said. She looked for similarities in the head carving thinking they might have been paper mache. The carve marks are different there also.
