So sad he will be remembered for his contribution to music and personally making my teenage years a lot less gloomy. Brass Monkeys all around. Its just how I feel.
I think EVERYONE on this board has gotten down to something they have done,
I'm a big boutique fan myself,
So how's your hair?

Sad news indeed. Beastie Boys' License to Ill was my first casette tape at the ripe age of 9. I've been a fan ever since, even though I liked their older stuff a lot more than the more recent stuff. I really enjoy The Mix-Up, though, probably one of the few.

I am crushed! The Boys are still in my top 10 favorite bands--favorite rap, for sure (up there with Tribe Called Quest, RunDMC). I've seen the B-Boys play at least three times, including Lollapalooze back in 94. I was stoked to get their latest album...and if you haven't seen the movie short they did, what with hollywood actors (Elijah Wood, Will Ferrell, + ?) playing the Boys...you HAVE To check it out! Hilarious!
I knew MCA had cancer, but I thought he had beaten it. I was waiting for them to come around again, and I was hoping for Hot Sauce Committee Part 1. Here's hoping they have some songs stashed away to give us a tribute album. :(

It's all ways sad when someone dies, so RIP MCA.However, I can't stand hip-hop in general, the lifestyle or the fans. I don't know why rap is so popular- Death metal is way more heavier than rap, Thrash metal is way more faster and Black Metal is way more evil. So what's so great about rap in the first place? 'Cause -rappers make words rhyme(?)-,then Dr.Suess was the greatest rapper who ever lived!

I'm not sure they are comparable,
although the beasties did start off as a punk band,
interesting,
don't worry there is room at the table for everyone....

The news has broke my heart. The Beastie Boys made me who I am today. I was 6 yrs and I went to the record store in 86 and gave the owner my name and phone number and asked them to call me when Licensed to Ill was released. Yeah I was a fan at age 6 and before their LP came out. I remember the day that call came and I begged my Mom to take me to the store. I opened that tape and put it in my boombox and my life was forever changed! I have gone on to become an MC myself and have recorded several LPs and played shows up and down the East Coast. On their last tour I went to the show in Philly at the Wells Fargo Center and had floor seats and I got front row center. I had a custom made B-Boy hat on and during a break in between songs Ad Rock stopped the show to talk to me about the hat. All three ended up coming over and I got to tell each one how much they meant to me and gave them all praise and thanks. So glad I got to say that to MCA in person. RIP Adam Yauch, one of the most influential people in my life. You will be missed. Glad to see this thread on the Tank.

When I heard this on the news earlier I couldn't believe it. I don't think anyone could of grown up in the 80's and not of listened to the Beastie Boys atleast once. I had to break out a few old tapes and CD's and play them when I got home.
Rest in Peace MCA, you'll be sorely missed but never be forgotten.

No matter what kind of music you listen to, you gotta give the Beastie Boys respect. Licensed to Ill was way before it's time. Paul Revere and No Sleep till Brooklyn were always my favorites. Sad day for the music biz.

I didn't even know he was sick. I just checked my email at work today and I see one from Luscious Jackson w/ the subject "Goodbye Adam Yauch." I just keep thinking of that bass breakdown in "Sabotage." Talented, intelligent guy. MUCH more than just a rapper.

Ah, but that's what was different about the Boys. Same with a lot of other groups like Tribe Called Quest, Lords of the Underground, etc...they made solid raps and even had fun with it, unlike the gangsta crap that took off in the 90s. The Boys were NEVER about being hard, and while they definitely had their own sense of cool, they were down to earth musicians who actually rocked the crossover with instruments decently enough. MCA didn't die because he was in some gun battle with the bloods and crips, not because he overdosed on his own supply (which he didn't have anyway, check out their lyrics "don't smoke chiva, can't stand crack"). He died a father with cancer.
I suppose Dr. Seuss...if he could have spit his lyrics smoothly on the mic, might have had another career in the making. But proper flow is an art form all in itself. ;)
One more thing: The BBoys were legit; real talent. Not novelty acts like Vanilla Ice/etc. They put the rap/music world on it's head with the sampling/layering affects from Paul's Boutique.

Whoa! Very cool story--thanks for sharing.
My style/personal pop culture was shaped big time by the BBoys, too. I still rock the Pumas/Addidas in homage, and I always will. I'm a 37 year old elementary school teacher, and there ain't (yep, I said ain't) no way I'm rocking those ugly school teacher sweaters.

When your fingers touch your keyboard do you actually feel the idiocy flow through them? I'm just wondering on a medical level if it's something that's tangible or do you type things like that without thinking about what it reads like?
