Exclusive Interview: ‘G.I. Joe: Retaliation’ Director Jon Chu on Why You Should Give The Sequel A Chance | /Film (http://www.slashfilm.com/exclusive-interview-gi-joe-retaliation-director-jon-chu-give-sequel-chance/)
possible clue about Cobra Commander continuing to the next G.I. Joe movie?
Question: Can you talk a little bit about reinventing Cobra Commander? This is the Cobra Commander I grew up with and it’s very different than the first film, so how did we get from what we saw in the first film to this?
Jon Chu: We tell that story in the movie, so you’re going to have to see the movie to fully know how that transformation is and it was difficult to find how. (Laughs)
Question: So it’s not like it just starts out like that?
Jon Chu: No, we don’t start there. We actually see how it all sort of unfolds, but it definitely is fun. That was one of the most fun challenges to figure out. I want Cobra… I freaking follow Cobra Commander on Twitter and I love all of those things and that’s iconic. There are very few villains that are as iconic as Cobra Commander, so I wanted him to be a presence in this movie. In fact, I can’t wait to see more of him in future things and what he can become, because I still think this is just the beginning of Cobra and we had a lot of fun designing the costume. Both he and Snake Eyes took months of designing, redesigning, going too far one way, then coming back, then going too far that way, so…
Question: It’s cool, because he looks like what I imagine Cobra Commander looked like in my childhood, but he doesn’t. He looks so much cooler.
Jon Chu: Yes. We had a great… Louise Mingenback, who was our costume designer, she was amazing. She doesn’t know a lot about JOE necessarily… She did all of the X MEN stuff and things like that, but she is like super high fashion, like she knows what looks good. There was always a thing back and froth between us of like what fit the comic and what she brought to the table.

Sorry but two things, 1) when has CC acted any different? 2) Stop assuming things.
Cool news, I look forward to the transformation of CC.

A hero is only as strong as his villain! And the Commander is one badass villain!

You did it again.
Congratulations. I've been here almost five years and you're the first Tanker I'm putting on my ignore list.

The Commander runs away like in the 1st one. So much for Chu making him bad A$$.
Um, action movie/comic book villains generally frown on getting caught. Why WOULDN'T he run away?

Wow... Mistersoap64 (Calling you "Captain" is an insult to the rank) were you born a complete jackass or did you grow into it? Posting movie spoilers without warnings is about as much of a dick move as you can get.

Does anybody know where to get The Rock's chest body armor? It would be great for airsoft and paintball!

I wonder when there will be any mention of Mouse or the other characters that are brought into the story. Before the trailer hit, these were easily the most controversial part of the movie development.

I’m convinced that’s where I learned how to tell stories and make movies, because of my toys and in those cases when a guy’s arm fell off, that was even better, because it made the story more interesting and you would lose a guy for a day and then you’d find him again and they’d appear again. So all of those things, to me, is what we tried to build into the movie
This is just speculation cause I'm WAY out of the loop, but it sounds to me like he's all for thinking someone's "lost" and bringing them back... so there could be truth to the Duke rumors.

Don't worry, if Duke is injured and on his death bed, they will revive him with stolen Borg/Cobra nanomite technology.

To say the first film was a success based on tickets sales doesn't mean its a good movie.People went to see G.I.Joe-Rise of Crap because it was the first G.I.Joe film made(with hopes it would be good)...its not like the theatres offered refunds after watching that pile of poop steam...the denial that the majority of fans hated ROC baffles me.The movie is hardly watchable
and Same with Retardation,we're ALL going in with hopes that this will be G.I.Joe and ultimately a good movie.

The insistence that "the majority" of fans "hated" ROC is a denial of reality. Based on polls taken on this very website, the majority of opinions were neutral or better. "Hatred" was absolutely NOT the majority. Very few loved it without reservation, but equally few hated any and every thing about it.

I guess its all who you hang around with and who has actual good taste in movies, because everyone I know and from other forums aswell, thought Rise of Crap was terrible and rightfully so.

I liked ROC, and am looking forward to Retaliation. Although, I disagree with some points of the first movie, I still enjoyed it.
I'm not too concerned with other people's taste in movies, I just like what I like.

"Jon Chu: It’s crazy, because as polarizing as that first movie was, people still went and saw it and people still went and saw it over and over and the DVD sold like crazy, so…"
I did not. Watched a bootleg and did not like the movie. Will see THIS one though.

Now worries,
that's the Paramount Execs and Di-bonventurapetdecetive speaking out of their collective asses over Chu..he is contractually obligated to sound this way lol...same effect happened to Larry Hama when he said ROC could not have been taken from one of his comics any better at face value....

Just one thing.. Joe Colton was a part of the GIjoe/Cobra Marvel mythos before. Jon Chu didn't come up with the idea to add him to fuse the Old GIjoe with A Real American Hero.
In the original Larry Hama line Colton appeared in at lease 2 issues where he alluded to the fact that he FORMED GIjoe when Hawk offered him to join the team. He was also with a woman named Jane *something* who was 'The teams nurse back in those days' (GIJane)
