I checked out a new video game store that just opened here in my rural town. I was considering buying a vintage video game system from them, more specifically, a Playstation 1.

If you own a PS1, can you tell me your impressions of the system and can you recommend some games I should buy?

Ahhhh, the ol' PS1! I wish I still had mine.

My top two "most recommended" games HAVE TO be Final Fantasy VII and VIII.

I still have the original games, but the PS1 bit the dust a long time ago. It's buried in the backyard.

PS1 is my fav game system of all-time... so many great games, but most of those games have to be played back in the day... by today's standard they suck. LOL. Unless you haven't played any next-gen stuff then it should be okay. Depends what kind of games you like though... there was a similar thread a while back: http://www.hisstank.com/forum/video-games/22484-playstation-1-a.html

Game Day 98 :)
NFL Game Day '98 is still the most fun I ever had playing a football game. I remember buying the PS1 bundle from Costco and that was the game it came with (either that or Game Day '97, I forget which).

To be honest I never liked Madden (except Madden '93 for the SNES). And I never played NFL2K, so Game Day is still my fav NFL game.

Ok, now a second question.

Is $15.00 a good deal for a Playstation 1?

It would be complete with all cords and two controlers.

I'd say it a good deal a $15. You may also want to pick up a memory card too.

Grab a memory card or 2 if they have it. Also you should play:

Final Fantasy Tactics
Final Fantasy 7, 8 and 9
Vandal Hearts
Suikoden 1 and 2
Breath of Fire 3
Revelations : Persona
Lunar Silver Star Story
Lunar Eternal Blue
Brave Fencer Musashi

I'm an RPG fan if you can't tell :D

Resident Evil 1,2,3 and Survivor
Silent Hill
Syphon Filter 1 and 2
Mortal Kombat Trilogy

An important note: While you can play RE2 first, Survivor is best saved for last. And then only if you fully enjoy the Resident Evil series.

It's a totally different price range so may not be an option for you, but if you get the cheapest available PS3 the entire PS1 back catalogue can be played on it.

Personally, I find it hard to revisit PS1 games. I'm not a graphics whore, but it's still tough to play even the games I loved after being spoiled by the 'next gen' systems.

I still use my portable PS1. I keep it plugged in so I can play Final Fantasy VI and Tactics.

From what i understand, only certain games are backwards compatible.

$15 is a good price for a ps1, but depending upon which model it may not last long.

As for ps1 must have games, i would recommend the following:

FFVII
FFTactics
FrontMission3

IMO two games that I would recommend are Marvel Vs. Capcom Clash of Superheroes and Castlevania: Symphony of the Night. I used to play those games so much and really enjoyed them. I wish I still had them and one day may repurchase them when I can afford it.

nothing ... and I mean NOTHING beats MGS on the PSOne. That game was and still is one of the most amazing video game experiences in the history of games.

And I am NOT a fanboy by any stretch, in fact, I don't really like the rest of the series. I have the PS4 game, and the HD collection on XBOX because I got it for xmas, but rarely do I play either, nothing seems to top the first. ;)

I still remember playing it for the first time and thinking how awesome the intro part was because they made it just like a movie when you left the submarine and was controlling it while the credits still rolled.

I still think Resident Evil 2 was a better overall PS1 experience for me though. For me...

1. Final Fantasy 7
2. Resident Evil 2
3. Metal Gear Solid
4. Parasite Eve
