Just curious if anybody had a cut off year that they don't go beyond for collecting, or do you have a year yous start your collection with?
For me it would have to be anything on or before 89 (and there is only a select bit from 89 I would want).

for me the selections i have from any given year seem to decrease significantly after 1986.
this is it from the post 1986 world... then everythng from the modern era is up for possible inclusion, but mostly im interested in modern era representations of characters/figures i have and like from the original run. although there are exceptions.

I collect ME, so 2007-present for me. I do have maybe 200-300 O-ring figures that survived from my original collection, but they don't get mixed in with my ME collection nor inventoried with them.

Any year with o-ring figures is great. I guess 2010 is my cut-off year since that's when the final o-ring figures were released at Joecon.

For me 1982 to 1992, 92 being the last year I had Joes as a kid. Although I did pick up a Joe Colton and a Battle Corps Cobra Commander, those being the only exceptions. And then from 2007 to now. Got all of the 25th and ME, skipped about 99% of ROC and was going to skip POC then saw the Shock Troopers and the few ARAH styled figures and got sucked back in and ended up with a decent POC collection and all of the 30th. Gonna skip most of the new movie line too, just waiting for that Crimson Guard and Night Viper, although I'll atleast pick up a Joe Colton and Roadblock and a Joe Trooper if only to get a decent grenade launcher for 25th Gung-Ho and a few Cobra Troopers for thier parachutes.

For the most part I collect '82-'86. I dont have much after 1986 for GI JOE. That's when I started getting out of Joe as a kid.

I don't buy original ARAH anymore as I have everything I want. Even if I hadn't, I wouldn't place restrictions on myself. Even if there's just one figure from a particular year I like, I get it.

83-92 thats it. Anything beyond that was redonculous for ARAH
2008- still going...well see if we end up with more retaliation poorly articulated pos's in the future line liek a retrun to Sgt. Savage...no way folks, that happens that will be my final cut off.

2012 was mine. I've reduced my collection from over 300 to just around 30. My only buys for the foreseeable future are the Jinx figures... thats it.
1982-1987 The Sunbow years. This was before neon really took over, Ninja took over the comics and Dic took over the cartoon. When I think about what Joe is that the era I picture.
2007-Present I collect as well.
But 1988 & 2006 will be a total void in my collection.

I'm that way with Star Wars figures, I rarely buy them anymore because essentially they are redo's of the same 8 characters and that becomes costly for no reason.

1987 is the cut-off as "all inclusive." After that, it's just a handful of stuff related to IG's and Dreadnoks and maybe a few army-builders.

This sums mine up pretty well. I could care less for most of the 2001 - current offerings, but am pretty dedicated up through 1994.
1989-1992 are my favorite Joe years ever, and I think 1990 is arguably the pinnacle of the Joe line.

83-87, plus the 25th anniversary line for me. I do have a couple figures from 88, but I dont see myself ever getting anything past that. I may pick up the new Cobra Commander from Retaliation because, you know, its Cobra Commander.
Edit: I will pick up a Night Boomer (out of box) if I come across one for a decent price just cause I think the SkyStriker in black looks sweet.

I don't post on here much, but this is an interesting topic so I thought I would jump in. For years I limited it to 82-90, but then I got a few from 91, then a few from 92, and now I'm looking at a shelf full of neon armor, monsters, aliens and neon colored ninjas. I'm not really sure what happened. This happen to anyone else?

I don't have one.
What I do have a cut off for is number of figures per character.
I'll take one version of every character rather than multiple versions of any. (The exception being the 2nd versions of many O13)
1990. Less the Stupid ones. Oops, I meant Sonic ones.

Kind of. I stopped collecting initially as a kid not because I outgrew toys, but because the Joe stuff being made did not interest me... ninja force, neon, etc. But now I kind of see all eras as having a charm of their own, and will pick up something if it looks cool to me at the time. So yeah, I now have some of that stuff I used to think sucked! It's all good, as long as it's fun.
That said, I am interested mainly in the current more detailed stuff (like POC) as well as the older classic era (especially 1983-1984). But still pick up anything in between if I like it. Don't have any Sigma 6 yet though.

For me, basically anything 3 3/4" from 1982 through now, none of the 12", Sigma 6, G.I.Joe Extreme or G.I.Joe Sgt. Savage stuff for me.
With the lull in new stuff since the last wave of 30th, I have filled in many gaps in my vintage 1982-1994 and 1997-1998 lines.

YEAH I THOUGHT I WAS GONNA STOP @89...next thing i know i'm trying 2 get everything i can
For me it's 83- 90 with a couple of 91-92 figures mixed in. I don't care for straight-arm figures from 82, and I didn't like the figures at all for 93 and 94.
However, I have just about every figure from 2000 to now. I didn't get the reissued Headquarters or MCC, and I skipped more than a few Spy Troops/VVV figures, but otherwise I was pretty much Joe crazy for 12 years now.

That's kind of my sentiment too. in some ways the post '88 line feels almost like a completely different line from '82 thru '87, and the stuff from '91 on REALLY feels that way. But each era has a unique charm that makes them a lot of fun. Mega Marines are actually some of my favorite figures now, probably because I'm a huge Inhumanoids fan and they kind of have that vibe.

I don't have a cut off year. I buy mostly ME figures but still have all of my ARAH and New Sculpt Era figures. I stick mostly to 3.75" Joes, but don't mind mixing in Sgt. Savage figures. Basically I get whatever I want, lol! GI Joe is awesome BTW.

For the most part I collect '82-'86. I dont have much after 1986 for GI JOE. That's when I started getting out of Joe as a kid.
I happen to be the same way with regards to my collecting. Most of my collection is just repurchasing the ones I played with as a kid since I don't have my childhood originals anymore. So I guess for me my cut off would be 86/87. After that time I think I was getting into other toys like TMNT and losing interest in G.I. Joe.
