In 1983, 2 years before I was even born. There was a five part mini series that aired on network television called The M.A.S.S. Device.
I found a copy of it at Wal Mart for 5$. How could anyone possibly go wrong? It even shows the episode where Snake Eyes finds Timber. I never had seen these episodes until I purchased it. One of the best animated shows of the 80's. Thanks Wal Mart.

That was the first sunbow mini-series! That was my very first exposure to Joe when I was ten years old! still one of my favorites! I had to get all the 25th DVD packs so I could collect all the pieces of the MASS device toy!

That sounds really cool. Yeah, like I said it aired 2 years before I was born.Better late, than never. Now I know how good of a series it really was. And knowing is half the battle.

I think it's safe to say that no guys like the DIC crap, but how about any female Joe fans out there, did they like DIC?

The M.A.S.S. Device was a classic cartoon and most of the Sunbow shows are great. A lot of people complain about some of the goofy stuff in the Sunbow cartoons, but the classic Larry Hama comic had a lot of goofy stuff in it, and people consider those to be the "bible" cannon. The thing I loved most about the M.A.S.S. Device cartoon was the forgotten hype it received back in 1983. It got a lot of advertisement for a special mini-series, it came on at 6:00 in the evening here in Ohio( which was kind of a big deal back then ), and it totally lived up to the hype! Where I lived G.I. Joe was moderately popular up to that point in 1983. After the M.A.S.S. Device premiered it was huge! I really liked Joe toys, but after the cartoon hit I pushed my Star Wars toys aside and embraced a new love G.I. Joe. It was all my friends talked about at school for weeks. Ah the power of good media. :)

I remember the hype for MASS device too! I remember my mom mentioning it to me, "Hey there's this new cartoon mini-series coming on TV today called GI joe or something, you should check it out!" In retrospect, I think she just wanted me to be quiet and stop picking on my siblings for 30 minutes...

I have to say I find MASS to be boring. It drags on way too much and there is not really any suspense in what is happening. ON the other hand, Cobra Commander was at least not a total moron.

I first saw the MASS Device as a weekend movie special and by then the first season of Joe was well established that I kept thinking where was Flint, Shipwreck, Airtight? not knowing this was the pilot mini-series.

I loved the Mass Device Mini's. I saw them as they originally aired. My brother and I where already collecting Joes but that show turned us into army builders.

I loved the MASS Device mini series. It's a classic. I'm glad you found it and enjoyed it so much. I remember watching it as a child and wanting such figures as Snowjob, Gung-Ho, and Stakler but I really really wanted Duke.
