View Full Version : GI Joe #0 Review
Snake Eyes-Joe Ninja

Figure'd I'd send out a review of the issue. I know other people have talked about it, but I didn't see anything very ellaborate, so here's my two cents...
Characters seen (In context):
Duke
Hawk
Flint
Chuckles
Torpedo
Beachhead
Tomax or Xamot (Possible)
In the small story with Chuckles, he is approached by an individual who wears a blue business suit with red higlights and lapels and has brown hair. This is possibly one of the twins.
Of note: It appears that Roadblock will be officially renamed Heavy Duty, according to the character design sketches, which include Duke, Destro, Snake Eyes, Scarlett, Baroness and Heavy Duty. Heavy Duty/Roadblock wears his V2 uniform.
Larry Hama makes a comment of coming up with a new baddie to "out-bad Cobra Commander and Destro", and that Raptor will likely not make an appearance.
There are three stories (which you porbably know about already), including Duke and others attacking a gun runner freight boat, getting the word "Cobra" for their troubles. Another story has Hawk (threatening with a gun???), asking Duke if he's in or out. Big surprise, Duke says yes. The final story hints at Chuckles' first encounter with Cobra, and gives you an insight to his character, which I relate to a noir toned protagonist in a military story.
Overall, I would give this a B+, as the price is great for the stories, interview and sketches. There isn't much there, content-wise, but what is there is pretty good.

Great issue for the price. Hama's pages definitely prove that the way he is handling this series is far different from the way he handled the comics in the comic packs(the story he wrote in this one is serious in tone, no kiddy elements whatsoever). I like how Duke poked fun at his given code name.

Read all 3 previews. Great stuff. Definately a more hardcore tone then either the Marvel or DDP stuff. DDP's America's Elite comes closest in tone, but still this isn't kids G.I. Joe anymore.
Same with the Resolute preview. No more A-Team Gun fights (where no one dies or gets hit). More realistic and more hardcore. Gotta love it.

I luv the direction that IDW is going with this... I cant wait to read issues the new issues when they come out.. I also picked up all 4 covers... I love the artwork as well..
Heavy Duty = Roadblock, I see. The character design is definitely Roadblock, but I wonder what his identity will be... Marvin Hinton or Lamont Morris? This is bothersome.
Loved this issue though... can't wait for me. For the record, I picked up the SE visor cover... I liked how it was embossed, with the matte finish.

This is bothersome. I couldn't agree more. I recall in a comic, I think it was in the DDP run, that they made light of this situation. Roadblock met Heavy Duty and said, "What are you supposed to be, my replacement?"
I'm actually very upset by this. I've always thought "Heavy Duty" was a stupid name. Roadblock was a great name and a great character. He showed up with Duke in the old Comic; they had both worked together as Rangers Instructors at Ranger School before coming to G.I. Joe (G.I. Joe Declassified). Besides being a classic character and one of the toughest Joes on the team, Roadblock is the only Joe from my home State of Mississippi. I'm very disappointed.

It might not be revealed, in the Origins preview, the guy who becomes Duke no longer has any other name, other than Duke, Hawk said that was one of the rules for joining the team, once they are in, their previous identities are gone.
I hope eventually the Roadblock/Heavy Duty is rectified, they are different characters.
doomed huh

It is annoying that they would change the character just because Heavy Duty is what the movie is using.
For all they know the movie could bomb and this link to it would be toxic
It was also irritating the way the blurb said like: "Ive always enjoyed Heavy Duty's vol2 costume." like some kind of revisionist history

Roadblock, Heavy Duty, really doesn't matter to me the story and direction of this run is awsome!

I was grinning from ear to ear after this read. I love the direction this is going in, and the character designs are great with the modern touches here and there.
I'll echo the previous comments - I would want the Roadblock v.2 character they showed to be Marvin Hinton from Mississippi regardless of the name they stick him with.

Maybe they just messed up and called Roadblock the wrong name?

I really enjoyed this comic. I was disappointed with America's Elite from DDP so I hope the reboot is atleast as enjoyable as this issue was.
From what I have read I think I will enjoy the main GI Joe comic the most. I enjoyed Chuck Dixon's Team 7 series so I'm sure his take on GI Joe will be just as good
I didn't care to much for the art in the Cobra story but I do like the idea of featuring Chuckles in an undercover role in the Cobra organization
The GI Joe Origin is only supposed to be a limited series from what I understand which is good because I don't care much for the original 13 but it is written by the Godfather so it might be good

I was thinking the same thing when I was looking at the sketches
Lastly, I hope the decide to stagger the releases of these books. 1 book a week instead of trying to flood the shelves with all 3 in one week

Well it already isn't the "original 13" since Duke is there in the preview... it's a new continuity so they don't have to have the first toys as the first members.
Anyway, I'll pick up all 3 titles at least to start with.

Good point. I didn't take in to consideration the reboot when I posted

I was kind od skeptical at first about the new book(s)...but i do like where this is headed.Being a fan of the Marvel,Image and DDP books i think a whole new perspective was needed...so until January............

This preview was a fun read and I am excited to read all three titles when released.
Ok it is clearly Roadblock in the sketch. NOT Heavy Duty. I really hope this was a typo. I could care less if they have Heavy Duty in the Movie.
It's just not GI Joe
without my bro

Even the news about the replacement of RB's name with the name Heavy Duty (blah!) can't damper my excitement for this book... Finally a G.I. Joe comic I can be proud to buy. Thank you IDW.
