ok! i made a thread yesterday to see who was a hip hop head! an this is my metal head thread. i like the way that sounds!! anyway whose a metal head. an what groups! i would make this basically for classic metal in the likes of judas priest , iron maiden , merciful fate , king diamond , sabbath , dio, helloween, exodus, overkill,... but oh well cus im sure there are other metal heads in here, so this will be for the heads that like celtic frost, venom, possessed, an all that kinda stuff as well! thanks for lookin an contributin'! oh one more thing. god smack aint metal! so none of that stuff please. only thing metal bout god smack is the drummer was in the thrash band wrathchild america out of maryland in like 89 90 era! an played in ugly kid joe! an ukj really wasnt metal, but was in a way! ok so know god smack type radio crap , this is for metal!! thanks!

actually abe, there is one band out of ohio ,or some midwest state. they are younger, an heavy, an very good, .. usually i'd say christianity an metal dont mesh, like stryper! but these kids are real good, they sound like old metallica to the T! perhaps you may know the name, i forget the name. but they are excellent!! if you say the name i'd remmeber it, but off the head im clueless like who's this!

Sabbath
Maiden
Metallica (Kill 'em all - Puppets & now Death Magnetic)
Megadeath
AC/DC
Slayer

I'm open to pretty much anything hard rock / metal, I'll run the whole gambit and still pretty much enjoy anything with a hard sound to it.

Grindcore, Power Metal, Death Metal, Black Metal, it's all good. I can't stand Metallica, though. Don't care what anyone says - even their old stuff was basically mall-metal garbage. My list of 'favourite metal bands' is as long as my arm, but here's some off the top of my head:

Amon Amarth (the KINGS of metal)
Manowar (the other KINGS of metal)
As Blood Runs Black
Cradle of Filth
Motorhead
Stormlord
Kalmah
Kreator
Exodus
Blind Guardian
Iced Earth/Demons & Wizards
Brutality
Bal Saggoth
Exodus
Byzantine
Cradle of Filth
Children of Bodom
Winds of Plague
Wintersun
Death
Caliban
Moonspell
Goatwhore

Of course, the classics go without mentioning right? Sabbath, Zep, etc.

Manowar touring again would be good news. DragonForce is some fun power metal.

Evan mentioned Gorgoroth and Borknagar - both awesome.

In the metal-only vein, I grew up on Sabbath and Priest, which led me into Blind Guardian and Helloween, which led to Iced Earth, then Death, then bands like Borknagar, Vintersorg, Agalloch, Gorgoroth, Opeth, Bloodbath. Borknagar continues to be my favorite "metal," band, although melodic black metal is not a genre lots of people go crazy for.

i love it...:)

Ha! No shit! One of my bands... Call The Paramedics just opened for the Mentors in Delaware last weekend.
I'm also in a fairly popular (not to sound like an ass) stoner metal band called Solace.

yeah both his bands are good too! solace is more radio freindly an the singer at times reminded me of sabatian bach, the way he screamed. solace is lighter then ctp!

I'm an old-school Queensryche fan, and a number of hair metal bands from the 80's that have disappeared... so I don't think that quite qualifies.

As far as more current, I tend to go for the more theatrical types:

Manson
Zombie

Been listening to Hard Rock/Metal my entire life. Seen a shit load of concerts, good and bad. Am more traditional in taste, but run the sprectrum from Zeppelin to Slayer. Even getting older, like to listen to some up and coming bands, got into Lacuna Coil last summer, like music too much to stick with one type of style.
Let's say if it's called any of the following, Rock, Hard Rock, Metal, Speed, Trash, Black, Goth, etc... ( long list of crazy variables) I'll probably give it a try.

Wondering...in terms of concerts, who seen what, which were good and which were bad.
If I had to choose one extremely memorable concert, Black Sabbath's 1999 reunion at the Bell Centre in Montreal...worse? Dio's Sacred Heart tour...had tickets way back on the floor, never saw Dio, the guy is like 5 foot 4 IN HEELS!
Craziest concert? Slayer's show at the Palladium in Montreal, was caught in front of the stage...almost needed 911 to get me out.

Heavy and Metal is just the begining.
Loincloth from richmond virginia were pretty bad ass, The Melvins rule pretty hard, The Locoust push the whole genera in a good direction, and as far as newer metal bands go Lamb of God are pretty good.

ok well i geuss your right, we all are misinformed an were lied too! guys, we dont know metal!
Your probably right in that assumption as well

we all should be listenin to alice cooper, then maby we might know what metal is!
You probably should all be listening to the Alice Cooper group they were quite great. 'Pretties for You' and 'Easy Action' are the best, but long out of print in America.
I'm not saying they were the be all, and end all of "Metal" but probably in everythig else while still contributing heavily to. I appriciate them for there contributions in making psychedelic music have balls again, and general kick assary. They were together before Black Sabbath, and in my opinion beat the pants off them at their own game.

Alice as a frontman was a far supirior song smith, lyricist, and had a general better stage presence than Ozzy "can't sing a melody that dosen't mimic the guitar line" Osborne.

Neil Smith is a far superior drummer than Sabbath's own Bill Ward.

Glen Buxton or Michael Bruce could whoop the shit out of Tony Iommi any day of the week on guitar.

And Dennis Dunnaway comes second to NONE (accept perhaps Mike Watt) at whearing the hell out of a Bass. He's the best on the planet IMO at said insturment.

TL;DR Screw off and don't post if you have to act like an asshole.

[edit] Better yet if you want to get it out of your system go post on 4chan. Plenty of people like that there.

And you just proved your ignorance as to the history of rock & roll

Don't tell me what to do.

I thought acting like an asshole was having horrible musical taste. Silly Me

Dude, Sabbath is my all time fav band and biggest influence...
BUT you are so damn on the ball. That original Alice Cooper band was amazing. No doubt about it. Buxton was awesome! I think it was that Detroit aura that all those bands had.

Kudos on the Melvins too.

Heres some bands I dig, but by no means am I limited to:

Sabbath
Orange Goblin
Corrosion of Conformity
Monster Magnet
Pentagram
Witch
Down
The Sword (kind of)
Clutch
Fu Manchu
Nebula
Kyuss
Atomic Rooster
Saint Vitus

A vast majority Hardcore Punk from about 79-88 was far angrier than any Metal I've ever heard. But then again it's a lot easier too write songs about being angry about facist cops, asshole politicians and being a squater, than ya know satan and partying and Un Black Metal

I would say it's about different -kind- of anger. Having grown up as a fan of both types of music, although admittedly leaning far more heavily toward metal and eventually getting to the point of not really liking much punk, I can appreciate both.

I think, rather than being angrier, hardcore punk was more openly vitriolic. That doesn't mean it was, in fact, angrier. Just more obvious. It's also worth noting that true punk music comes from a sense of pure rebellion and a sort of claustrophobia directed at societal trends.

Metal has something different going for it, because (and I don't mean to downplay the creativity involved in Punk music) metal has far more layers. Metal isn't just about rebellion and freedom, it's about power, masculinity, and sexuality. These themes, taken together, create something that isn't as overtly angry in style, but if you listen - there's a lot of exploding rage there.

Also, if you move past the generic 'metal' and into areas such as Death and Black metal, or Grindcore and even Speed Metal; that's angry stuff. In many cases there's more outright explosive fury in one brutal black metal song than exists in the entire late '70s Punk counterculture.

But again, oftentimes the anger in any form of music is dependant on experience. You'll 'feel' it more the more you actually identify with it. If you, just for example, don't identify with a disgust for Christianity and a struggle with powerful feelings of overt violence, it's possible that you'll often 'miss the message' in many Black and Death metal songs. Further, the music speaks on its own. Comparing almost any late '70s Punk song (in my experience) to almost any Black Metal song, the metal song is going to have a much more aggressive sound to it. The 'feel' of the music is just that different.

Of course, that's all just -in my opinion-.

Also - Alice Cooper sucked then, sucks now, and will always suck. And I like Alice Cooper. But they're about as amazingly perfect awesomesauce as Metallica. That is to say -- not at all worthy of the hype.

I have listened to Rammstein and been a big fan since 1995 when Herzeleid hit and it was a great album. I must confess though there album's have been progressively getting better and better, but still it's a three way tie for my fav album Mutter, Reise Reise and Rosenrot. They are supposed to have a new album out soon and i can't wait. Speaking of new album's though Cradle of Filth's new one entitled Godspeed on the Devil's Thunder is out OCT 28 and it will be amazing I'm sure.

Woah buddy.

Go listen to Killer.
quite possibly one of the greatest albums ever.

as far as my two cents on this:

Punk and Hardcore have always had a tendency to be more "real" in terms of anger. Go listen to an Earth Crisis album and then something like Countdown To Extinction by Megadeth. They are hitting on a few of the same areas of anger, but Earth Crisis is more about action, Megadeth about knowledge. While Megadeth might be more skilled, Earth Crisis are the ones who make me want to punch someone.

My biggest problem with metal is the overall trendiness of it. First its thrash, when thats not cool it becomes death, then black metal comes out to make fun of death metal, then you get Nu-metal and all of the sudden its all stupid, and now there is metal-core and neo-thrash that are destroying the Nu-metal.

Whatever, I like Slayer and Danzig....

You obviously have no idea what you speak about. If you did you would know Alice Cooper was a group, and not just a dude with a studio musician band. I'll agree that anything post 'Muscle of Love' is terrible. But lumping Alice's solo career in with the bands efforts is just Ignorant. It's like saying 'If I close My eyes Forever' is the worst Black Sabbath song, or saying 'If I close my eyes Forever ' is the worst Runnaways song. Those of us "in the know" Know better

I'm not saying it's a black sabbath song. I'm saying that if you think alice cooper the solo artist is anything like 'the Alice Cooper group' as a band, you might as well think 'If I close My eyes Forever' is a black sabbath song, or a runnaways song for that matter.

I don't blame people for not knowing the differance between Alice the guy, and Alice the band. It's not like He didin't want to mislead you into thinking the two were the same. Please. Spew your 'my metal dick is bigger than your metal dick' attitude at someone impressed by it. Or learn to read. I referred to Alice Cooper in my post as 'they,' not as 'him.' So your claim that I was not distinguishing between the group and the 'dude' is absurd. They suck. My opinion.

I certainly don't claim to be an all-encompassing 'anything metal' kind of guy. I am a metalhead, but not a mindless drone that feels any particular need to agree with every other metalhead on what constitutes good metal.

For instance, nu-metal is all crap. All of it. Rap-core; crap. 'Hardcore' (new, not hardcore punk) - crap. And I have a genuine like of Arch Enemy (a band that gets a lot of criticism in the metal circles I've travelled in for the lead vocalist's inability to really push her voice the way a lot of similar -male- vocalists can). It's all about opinion. Sorry if my post came off like I was trying to preach a fact.

I can understand your point, but I don't really agree here. Perhaps because I simply think of it a different way. When I listen to 'Disciple' - I hear fury unbound that blows away anything any hardcore punk band has ever done. Or 'Scavenger of Human Sorrow' - which, while not 'angry' in any real sense, is brutality vocalized. 'They Deserve To Die' is furious in a way I don't think I've ever heard from a Punk band.

But that's also just my experience playing into the music. Every person has their own unique reaction to music. So I'm not saying Punk has no anger, but it's a different kind of anger, expressed in a different way, which doesn't speak to me like angry metal does.

Couldn't disagree more. I don't think there's anything trendy about real metal. Thrash has nothing to do with Death metal. They're totally different genres of metal. And Black Metal is not making fun of death metal. Black Metal is a different style -- a darker, heavier version. The same way you have subdivisions like symphonic death metal or grind-core. The names are there usually just to help distinguish, the same way we use 'rock' and 'hard rock' and 'soft rock' to differentiate styles of sometimes similar music. No one can claim 'hard rock' is making fun of 'soft rock.' They're just different divisions of a similar style of music.

Nu-metal, however.. well.. bleh. That's the trendy crap. But one shouldn't extrapolate that to mean all metal is trendy just because some twits decided to make pop-metal for the new-MTV generation. That's no more relevant than the Backstreet Boys are to the Beatles. Boy bands, both. But vast differences between.

Whatever, I like Slayer and Danzig....

Y'all are such girls on here....cry babies.

no thats the emo thread.
here its "healthy discussion"

I would like to point out the fact that Death metal was started because "thrash metal bands like Slayer were too soft".
(I believe it was Deicide that said that)

Black metal was started because they got tired of extreme music being performed by guys from Florida in sweatpants. Mayhem was started specifically as a trend band, funny considering that the mottot for Helvete (the record shop that they started) was "No trend metal" But if you were into the "metal" (wow, with all the ""s!) scene in the '90s you simply were not cool unless you had Deathcrush or something by Bathory. Everyone was trying to out heavy everyone else.....

If thats not being trendy......

KnightDamien
10-23-2008, 08:51 AM
Everyone was trying to out heavy everyone else.....

If thats not being trendy......

It isn't. It's the opposite. Trendy is to follow a trend. Trying to 'out heavy' everyone else is the equivalent of an argument; a competition. To be heavier, darker, faster than the band to come before is the evolution of music, whereas to be 'trendy' is to stagnate -- specifically choosing not to evolve but rather to do what everyone else is already doing, to be pretty much the same as everyone else.

Every girl in the '80s wearing fifty bracelets on each wrist/forearm because Madonna was doing it was trendy. Death belting out some brutal noise because the existing metal scene wasn't hard enough is about as un-trendy as it gets.

Sure, maybe you just weren't cool in the '90s without your Bathory album. But that speaks more to how trendy some metal-heads can be more than it speaks to the trendiness of the scene or the bands. Unfortunately, the metal scene can be incredibly exclusionary. If you like Cradle of Filth - you're lame. If you don't like Motorhead then you just don't respect the classics of metal. If you like Nu-Metal, then you're a poser. Etc, ad nasueum.

Exclusionary attitudes like that foster a 'trend' mindset. It happens in every subculture, counterculture, and in pop culture. One of the things I like about metal is that the bands themselves tend to buck these trends.

And using one band's history (such as Mayhem, whom I don't like anyway) to try to encompass all of metal just won't work. It's like claiming Trent Reznor's personal beliefs are reflective of what Skinny Puppy or any other Industrial band thinks or why they do what they do.

Bands like Bauhaus broke away from the 'Dark Punk' genre to pursue a new style of music that would later be called 'Goth Rock' or 'Gothic.' Does that mean they were trendy? Hell no. They were the opposite. And the bands like London After Midnight or Sisters of Mercy that would follow them within that genre were not trendy, but rather were playing a style of music that appealed to them, because they wanted to - not because it was 'the cool thing to do.'

It's hard for any band not to be trendy, even the truly authentic original bands are seen as sellouts nowadays case in point; Linkin Park. No one sounds like them and they are very talented, but because they are popular they are sell outs....I don't get that attitude.

Anyway, I like everything from Hair Metal to Classic Metal to New Metal to Prog Metal. here is a short list....

Anyway, I like everything from Hair Metal to Classic Metal to New Metal to Prog Metal. here is a short list....

Sabbath, Priest, Maiden, AC/DC, Kiss, Alice Cooper, Uriah Heep, Anthrax, Megadeth, Metallica, Slayer, Nuclear Assault, Overkill, Testament, D.R.I. (Dirty Rotten Imbeciles), White Zombie, Pantera, Dream Theater, Opeth, Manowar, WASP, Twisted Sister, System of a Down, Serj Tankian, Tribe after Tribe, Suicidal Tendencies, Savatage, Dokken, Quiet Riot, Queensryche, Metal Church, Fear Factory, Flotsam & Jetsam, Dio, Cro-Mags, Danzig, Damn The Machine, Armored Saint....METAL RULES!

sweet list lot's of my fav's in there.. few more dokken krokus

It isn't. It's the opposite. Trendy is to follow a trend.

I think the general population (including myself) confuses the word trend with popular or sell-out. If a band becomes popular they are being trendy or selling out.

I have to be honest, I do not care if a band is a sell out...if the music is good, i will listen to it. OMG, I just realized I'm a sell out!

Agreed.
as for the other albums, I am about to nerd out and say this: I have every Alice Cooper album up to Flush The Fashion on vinyl....and yes I still have the billion dollar bill in my Billion Dollar Babies.

The Coop destroys all others.

My favorite AC albums are Killer, Flush the Fashion, and Raise Your Fist and Yell, but honestly, they all (every single last one of them, from Pretties for You all the way to Spider) rule.

I've heard that before, and I definitely agree. The whole 'they got popular so they sold out' is retarded. I can't stand people who believe they can't like a band just because lots of people like them. Good music is good music (Christina Aguilera has a killer voice, for instance).

I don't get how people can't seem to fathom that maybe a band gets popular not because it sold out, but because it's just that good. Or even if they aren't that good - that many people somehow identify with the music or find it enjoyable. Bands rarely have very much control over how popular they are or how much radio play they get.

This one friend of mine refers to any metal band that gets regular radio play as 'mall metal' - to distinguish metal that mallrats listen to from metal that 'real' metal-fans listen to. It's silly.

in reference to the "out heavy" thing.
my biggest problem with that whole thing was that when they were trying to out heavy each other they were slamming what came before them. Seriously, someone please tell me that Deicide are better musicians than Slayer. And I will laugh.

anyway, its all very clique-ish. If you are into Emperor you are supposed to bash Dokken etc. And it was EXTREMELY trendy in the '90s, as in if you were a real metal-head and didn't have Anthems To The Welken At Dusk...or if you didn't have it on a 3rd generation bootleg from Norway 6 months before it came out, you were a poser. There was a period where the hottest shit on the planet was trashy black metal crap that wasn't cool unless it was recorded in the basement of a haunted castle in the middle of a forest, and if anyone but you knew of the band they sucked....

and it still goes on today.

Who remembers Smashed Gladys? They had like one good song LOL

Has anyone heard of LSD Life Sex & Death? They were from Chicago and put out 1 CD around 92. The singer was an actual bum off the streets who snuck in the club and the band thought it would be funny to let him on stage. They fired their singer and hired the bum. Got a record deal and toured the nation. I met these guys in Tampa a few times...heres where it gets really strange. The singer (the bum) had to be a little crazy, he never changed clothes and smelled like nothing I have ever or ever want to smell again...completely gross, so much in fact that the band had 2 buses, 1 for the stinky guy and 1 for them.
All that aside....this guy was fantastic at what he did. He flat out rocked it. I wish I could see them live again, it was crazy!
Check them out!~

They are awesome guys too.
For the most part they attract the super-scene kids, which when they get asked stupid pretentious questions just kind of shrug it off. But you start talking to them about old punk and metal and just stupid random shit, like a human being, and they come alive.

They played here right after No Heroes came out, the club double booked the show on accident so they had to shorten their list. To make up for it they played a couple of songs off their newest one and since it was a small venue they took audience requests, for some of their longer songs they shortened em to have room to try and get a good chunk of the requests done. After the show they hung out and took pictures, gave away some merch and even went to eat with some kids.

In summation, they appreciate the fact that it is the small but rabid fanbase that pays the bills.

Dream Theater is def. one of my favorites. They are great because they throw back to their idols like Pink Floyd, Journey, Kansas. That's super cool.

I have a hard time picking a favorite band but most of top fav's are progressive, like Dream Theater, Iron Maiden, Uriah Heep, Journey, Styx, Megadeth, Metallica (old), Anthrax, Fates Warning, Savatage, Zeppelin, Queen. And have you ever heard MUSE? Holy crap their awesome!

Then straight classic rockers like ACDC, Judas Priest, Black Sabbath, Kiss, Alice Cooper and eighties stuff, Dio, Metal Church, Dokken, Motley Crue and the like.

I'm all over the map though because everything from the eighties (Prince, U2, Fixx, Cars, Cheap Trick), Punk (Misfits, Ramones, Sex Pistols, Greenday (hehe), Offspring) even some country and rap.

I guess you could say I'm well rounded, but metal bands make up the majority of my all time favs.

Hey check out the bands " Scale the Summit" and "Divine Heresy". I have recently discovered the 8 string guitar and although a lot of metal bands use them, you can really hear the instrument when you listen to these two bands. They are both on youtube, I got divine heresy off limewire but I had to buy Scale the Summit on itunes ( I never payed for music before!). ESP just came out with a bunch of 8 strings, the ibanez 8 string is a piece of garbage, I was an Ibanez fan for a long time ( when they were all made in japan!) but many of the Korean ( not all of them) ones are garbage. I will not pay 1499.99 for a Korean Ibanez 8 string with a crappy neck, the LTD one is awesome and lists for 999.99.

yo i found that group on youtube once divine heresy. anyway, i'm not to into the old singer, at times its too soft like a emo song. but the new singer on the bleed the fifth, both singers cover it, an the first singer does a excellent job , but the new one is brutal. i never heard any other songs from that guy so i dont know if he gets soft. but from that one track , he's remeniscent of old pantera. apparently the drummer an guitarist are from fear factory or one of those bands. can't remember..
