HOW MUCH IS TOO MUCH? 10-20-30-40?

just asking because i saw an 80 dollar low-light on evilbay(i know some1 is trying 2 scam folks by listing another @40 & making it seem like a good deal...but is it?

what does the HISS community think?

I for one hate it.... but its the law of supply and demand, so what can you really do. I never saw a lowlight in the wild, I got my one from BBTS. Would I love another one, yes. Will I pay 40 or even 80 for one NO...

Excluding exclusives, the most I've ever paid was $12 for a single figure. And I won't pay much more than that - which is why I still don't have a Low Light.

I won't pay more than $5.00 or 2 for $9.99, so I won't even pay the Wal-Mart price at the moment. Although, I might be cheap.

It depends on many things - supply, demand and the most important is availability.

It all depends on the person. Thankfully I have a good enough paying job that I can afford some of the inflated prices ebay has. I will only pay a high price for something that is MOC...The highest I've paid for 1 single figure was close to $60 for SDCC Sgt Slaughter. But then again he is my favorite joe and was my first as a mail in when I was in diapers. I have 2 of the USA versions and really want the Triple T version but can't see my self paying over $100 for it.

Considering that retail on Joes are $8.99 now, I guess that means you've stopped looking for figures anywhere but Ross, right?

And none of you factor in the near $4 a gallon for gas that you're using up looking all over your towns for figures? When instead, you can go to a local toy show or Ebay and pick up the figures you want/need for a marginal mark-up, and not have to worry about "will you find it".

If it's more about the thrill of the hunt, I get it. But if you're just being cheap about paying any kind of a mark-up, in this economy and with the overall lack of Joes in the marketplace and the price of gas, I just don't get it.

Im not into many of the high dollar figures. I never wanted Slaughter, or the Marauders set, or the club figures...but I still want/need a Zarana. From the looks of it I will be paying $60 bucks for Zarana! I tried to get one from CC and online both failed. Now I need her So I will pay that ridiculous amount for her! shes the A ROD of my collection!

I just paid $16 and some change for a Lowlight, ( An awesome tanker spotted one at a Walgreens for 10.99 and picked him up for me, he didn't charge me a dime over what he spent including shipping... and included some freebie fodder) this will be the 5th MOC I have owned, and the most I have paid for him. I plan on holding on to this one, I did some good trades for the others and don't feel bad about paying what I did, especially after seeing some of the prices they go for.

i've paid $14.95 for a single troop builder in a comic store, i don't think i'll ever spring more than that for a figure though. as for low light, i found probably a dozen or more of him at retail, so he's a $10 figure in my eyes.

In store? $8. If it's something that's rare and needs to get hunted down online... no limit, I guess.

03-14-2012, 11:43 AM
i think $30 is a fair price if you get the desired figure when it is fairly new but still in high demand.

the longer you wait, it could either go up , or end up at discount stores after 2 years.
so its a gamble.do i get it now ? or later?

as for the already high priced con figures , thats up to you my friend.

I've spent $50 for a exclusive, but as far a regular figure go $10 is the limit. Star Wars figures hit that & I lost all interest in them.

tycondrius
03-14-2012, 11:55 AM
on regular figures the most i've spent was about 20ish. but I had paid way much more for rare unreleased figures. but when it comes to figures that can be found at retail $20 is about my limit depending on how HTF it is if they are common as mud then 5 or 8 and if its a troop builder set if there 5 or more of that figure I'll go about 50 ish but thats only on troop building stuff.

Scotty97
03-14-2012, 11:59 AM
at retail, the $10 mark is pretty much my ceiling. Like VideoViper said, that's why I quit SW. If it's something I haven't been able to find and I'm into the wasting too much gas territory, I'll pay the online price to save myself the trouble. The most I've paid for a general release Joe online was around $25. Exclusives, unreleased stuff, prototypes, all that stuff is a different category. I've paid nearly $200 for some of those.

Taterbot
03-14-2012, 12:05 PM
I feel the same as most. My limit on retail figs unless it is a short cased figure and I really want it is $12. At a toy show I will spent up to $12 for a figure I want. On the other hand, Exclusives are a different story. As we speak I am considering shelling out nearly $300 for an exclusive vehicle that I want. It may not be worth it to someone else but Its what I am willing to pay for it. So it all depends on the person.

I recently payed $22 inc shipping for a POC Hawk. The reason I did so was based on this general formulae:

1) He's fairly important to the Joeverse.
2) He's a fairly recent figure who I'm guessing won't see a re-release for a few years yet.
3) He's a very good figure.
4) I like the character.

I probably would have gone up to $30 for him if I had to, so $22 (which is sorta the top of the current ebay value) is still a bargain for me.

Contrast that to my desire for the female dialtone. The prices are way to high for me because:
1) I need a communications expert, but there are other subsitutes avail.
2) I think there may be a rerelease sometime after the movie toys.
3) I am not so high on the figure. I think the Camo paint job is unbecomming and the face could use some work.
4) I like the character as portrayed in Resolute.

Through my formula, I personally value that character at around $14, which is below what others value her at. I am not a victim, I am not being ripped off. There are others out there that place more value on that figure than I do.

I too am looking for a POC Lowlight. Have wanted one of him since the 80's.

Great question, uberthawk. I think that for myself there is no set limit for how much I will spend on a figure depending on how much I want it. I have spent as much as $100 on a single figure, lol! What I do, and what I would suggest you do, (if you are even asking for advice?), is listen to your heart, lol! Good luck, and may the force be with you!

i will at max spend double the retail, but that is rare if i do it. i won't go after anything beyond that, but i'm patient that way. i'll wait until the demand goes down and watch as those over inflated prices on ebay dies down because the interest is no longer there and then, like retail stores, they lower the price to get rid of them lol. renegades storm shadow is a great example, i wanted one, but not at those ridiculous prices on ebay, so i waited patiently and found one yesterday at target for $8.99 :) as for exclusives.....sdcc cobra commander anyone? i got him for $45 right after the convention, now he goes for less.

I say no more than $12 for a hard to find figure.

Pet peeve time: people that call eBay "evilbay"... Without eBay you would have no chance of obtaining so many items. Yes, there's a lot of unscrupulous characters on there... But where else are you going to find the things you're looking for.

That said, I never buy modern era toys there... Just vintage. Because usually you'll find the new stuff eventually. With, apparently the exception of renegades storm shadow

Got to agree with you, I call ebay evilbay but for fun. Without Ebay there is a lot of vintage stuff I wouldn't be able to find. I have made some decent money on Ebay and that helps keep my cycle of selling joes to buy more joes going. Lately I have been trading and buying more on the tank. But Ebay is still a necessary evil. I think Ebay has gotten a bad rep because of the scalpers who sell on the website. Plus all the sellers fees don't help them either.

I know you guys are going to call bullshit but I normally get one maybe two of a fig and then I leave the rest in the wild. But with ss I would probably be inclined to grab him even though I have two and alert my fellow local tankers or offer it at cost to anyone who needs one. I wouldn't want to take my chance and risk a scalper grabbing it. And I think the thrill of just finding another one in the wild would be enough for me.

The CVS in my areas had $15+ for Joe figures about a month ago, though I noticed that they're back to $11 now.

From what I have read so far it seems a lot of you don't even collect figures or plan on quitting this expensive hobby. It is sad that with the economy(price of oil) an item that was $5 four years ago has doubled. How the hell do Hot Wheels keep the same price almost 20+ years.

I don't have a cap on how much I would pay for a single figure. Thank God, I have a well paying job and my car's finally paid off. Though when I think about it, 75% of my collection were purchased with tips that I have gotten from customers and stuff that I have sold.

The "bid" starts at $18 bucks... for most 25th A-list figures MOSC. And since many were released in battle packs the cost is much more. I missed the boat on many of the 25th line and am now trying to catch up. Prices are pretty expensive everywhere I look. I was looking for another shipwreck so I can keep the one I have now sealed and he is around $25+. I even found this one from Sears!

Wow, after reading SkullBusters list of what the 25ths are going for I'm pretty glad I picked up a lot of that stuff when it was on first run and got most around retail.

Renegades SS is the most I've paid for a regular figure, and even then he was $30 along with a Techno Viper, so that pretty much comes out to $15 each, pretty normal prices for secondary market figures. I might go as high as $20 for a regular figure depending on which one it is and what I figure availability in my area will be.

I think as far as retail goes 11.99 is the highest i'm willing to pay. However at 9.99 to 11.99 I'm much more selective and only buy the ones I really like. Once the regular retail price is 13.99 and up then i'll be done buying Joes all together.
