View Full Version : Are joe fans transformers fans?

Iv'e done a lot of research and came up with an obvious conclusion. It seems to me that over 80% of G.I.Joe fanatics are just as (if not more than) big Transformer Fans. Was this Hasbro's intent way back when both lines started. They really haven't been promoted as 'one' toy line, yet both lines seem to cross paths repeatedly. Or it could just be that these two 80's Iconic toy-lines were/are monsters in the industry of "boy's action toys."
Chances are when you were a kid and you are reading this you had a little of both, rarely, one or the other. Some of us Through the power of imagination combined the two ourselves. Why not? Joe's had kick-ass vehicles and Transformers always had humans around....the two mesh well.
There were always speculations of who would ultimately win of course. Robots VS Earth's military or just plain old good guys VS. the bad guys.
An even smaller percentage would have to include Star Wars fans in this mix as well.
My first question to you the reader is this:
There are Star-Wars Transformers toys.
Heck, they even have Marvel Comic Transformers toys.
Could Hasbro pull-off G.I.Joe Transformers toys?
If so who or what would they be? perhaps a Hiss Tank that turns into a Cobra Officer. Or a Sky Striker that turns into Ace?

If they made Joe/TF toys they should be TF's that turn into Joe Vehicles, not Joe Characters that are TFs.

They did in the Sigma 6 Line.....

Shin Gouki is right.
Joe and Cobra vehicles should transform into Transformer characters.
I want to see a Onslaught HISS Tank, Skyfire Skystriker, Skywarp Raven, Hound VAMP, Wheeljack AWE Striker (AWE Striker cannon mounted on his shoulder), Powerglide SHARC, Warpath MOBAT, Thundercracker Rattler, Thrust Firebat, Blades Dragonfly and Trailbreaker as the Night Force Persuader.
That would be AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!

GI Joe and Transformers actually share similar roots.
GI Joe influenced a japanese toy line called Henshin Cyborg in 1972. Joe style bodies with costumes and add on parts, etc. As time went on, the big stuff got too expensive, so they started making smaller versions of them called Microman (roughly 3 3/4"). Keeping most of the articulation from the Joe style and now being in a scale to produce lots of vehicles, etc... it was a success for a while. Among all their vehicles and such, were items and characters that could disguise themselves as everyday items (tape decks, pistols, etc). The Micromen, themselves, were billed as "Actual size" and they hid on earth pretending to be action figures. As it wound down, they started developing smaller guys (Diaclone) and smaller vehicles... vehicles and such that could turn into robots.
These transforming toys eventually became the G1 Transformers (that's why so many of the early ones actually have opening cockpits and stuff... so you could fit your little Diaclone figure in there).
It was around the same time Joe started coming out in the 3 3/4" scale, arguably influenced by the earlier Microman stuff (which was influenced by 12" Joe stuff). Of course, they were also influenced by the success of the Star Wars scale and such... but Transformers and GI Joe are all related behind the scenes.
I'd much prefer a Crossover toy line to turn into vehicles/partners for the Joes, not the Joes themselves. Then you can still have both properties represented better.
I don't think I'd buy them, myself, though. Maybe 1 or 2 if they deem to make my fave characters.

Oh Yeah I actually meant that they would be original Joe and Cobra vehicles tuning into Joe character likenesses. IE Vader's TIE fighter turned into Vader!

Lets hope Hasbro won't shit on the Joe series with the Transformer idea, unless it's vehicles that 3-3/4 figures will fit in.
MARVEL...STAR WARS...what's next? Indy? Spoiler: Short Round transforms into a Short Round...

One thing is for sure, Hasbro and "Us" are co-dependant. We can't live without each other.
As for the combining Joes into transforming figures, this idea disturbs me!

GI Joe transformers would make way more sense than Star Wars transformers.

This Joe Fan is a Transformers fan!
But im picky with TF. Cuz sometimes the robot modes look like shit. I like good articulation and less blockyness. lol

no no no Shin,
If hasbro made Joe/TF they SHOULD BE TF that are joe vehicles. But if Hasbros precious attempts are any proof, we would get JOE who become transformers.

Love Joes and Transformers.
But I am also very picky with my Transformers. Most of the time they have to be based of someone from G1. Some of the new ones they have come up with are pretty horrible.
Ninja Ku had it nailed with TF to Joe vehicles, but if they worked with the figures they would probably be pretty pricey.

In not too long we will see prototype images of an Awe Striker that turns into Duke!

Just thinking about how awesome it would be to see a Skystriker that transforms into Skyfire gets me really excited.
Depending on the scale of the bird, they could create an Ace figure to fit into the cockpit.
Box art would feature Ace running with his .45 in one hand and helmet in the other hand, and Skyfire in Robot mode right behind him.
How about Strato-Viper doing the same pose, with Skywarp standing tall right behind him. Man, a Cobra Raven that can tele-port itself in flight!
Think about that!!!

Yes for sure, the whole idea of vehicles turning into human characters always irritated me, so no Star Wars Transformers for me. I just don't have the imagination for it, but joes fitting inside Transformers was always my fantasy as a child. The scale would be rather large but imagine a life size U.S.S Flagg transforming into Broadside? I wouldn't know what to do with it. Brawl or Blitzwing turning into a Hiss tank or a Maggot. Metroplex becoming Joe headquarters. Trypticon becoming the Terrordrome. Though Decepticons aren't wild about human pilots/drivers. Sorry Ninja didn't read the whole thread. I also had an idea about Jetfire/Skystriker.

I believe that in one of the Joe/TF crossover comics that Starscream alt mode was a Night Raven.
Can't find the thread anymore but on TFW2005 some guy had started a custom based on the Night Raven.
It looked promising, but I can't find it anymore.
Oh, yeah. Big TF fan here too.

i used to be a pretty big transformers fan.
I was a kid in the 80's, and like a lot of us here, i was there from the beginning.
I'm still a fan of g1 inspired stuff, but i've drifted away from a lot of it.
I like it, but i'm not as hardcore about it anymore.
As a kid, the line ended with the movie. I saw that in the theater, and was blown away. The movie was such a pinacle that i knew it was never going to get any better.

I've been preaching this for a long time.I'm working a AWE Striker that turns into Beachcomber. The AWE is painted....I just can't find my Dremel parts to start cutting. He is a repainted Eco AWE striker, lets face it,if Beachcomber was in the Joe verse. He would be an Eco warrior.
I say hell no to a crossover were the joes transform into robots. If its anything like Starwars/transformers....pass.

I like GIJOE. I like Transformers. I don't want to see their children. The Trans-merging lines have been hit or miss. Couple cool ones, a lot of bad ones. I mainly just buy TF busts now, and I am collecting the comemorative editions from a while back. A few or the universe guys here and there. Not as rabid as I am with GIJOE.

Never was a TF fan, but I do like the cartoons and the movie. I bought 1 back when the line hit in the 80's(Skywarp). My second was last year(RC), which I gave away. Now if TF/Joe crossover was to happen and the vehicles could fit 1/18 figures, I'd get those, other wise my money goes to Joe & SW.

I like Transformers, but I really, really like GI Joe. I am in favor of a crossover only under two qualifications. 1. Transformers are actual characters becoming actual Joe vehicles (never Joe characters) and 2. They are of the Transformers scale (not 1:18/3.75" - completely impractical). Even our Joe vehicles aren't even completely true to scale. They would be too huge, expensive and unwieldy. H'bro could include mini-Joes/Cobras to use with them if that was important to some people.
I'd mainly like them for display. The smaller scale would make it easy to put them up in my cube (with my similarly scaled combat aircraft and Transformers replicas). Plus, if they have the kind of detail/paintwork that the SW Crossover vehicles have, they would be pretty sweet!

I am collecting both. However, I have more Joes than TF due to the cost, but I think it might not be the case anymore. Joe is 6.84 and TF is 7.77 at Wally now.

Not me. Joe only and I would prefer my Joes to be as robot free as possible. However, if their movie tanked, believe me, we would not have the Joe movie coming out. Call it a necessary evil. :D

As a kid I liked them both, but Transformers too precedence. As a teen though, going back and watching the cartoons, I realized that Joe was written much better. Now, Joe is tops for me. The last TF line I was into was Alternators. I stopped myself from picking up the Classics/Universe line, but they got some cool looking homage toys in that line.

I never liked Transformers because (IMO) the robots either looked cool as a robot or as what they were supposed to transform into---never both. LOL.
Plus sometimes the scales of the various Transformers were really different, so it was hard to get them to battle each other realistically. I had the Constructacons and they were small... almost Hot Wheel size, while some of my other Transformers were much bigger, so it was much different than how it was in the cartoon.

I love the two lines, but I don't know if figures fitting into Transformers that turn into Joe vehicles would work financially. Powerglide is about $40 in Canada and he would have to be 2.5-3 times the size to be the same size as a Rattler.
Now does $80-$100 sound good for a Transforming Joe vehicle? I'm thinking that maybe one or two, but I wouldn't be collecting a whole lot of them. :(

Well Powerglide is really heavy on the "Modern Technology" style of Transformers (really complex transformations with TONS of moving parts and joints).
Realistically, if you did them G1 Style, with simpler molds, it would work perfectly.
Just as an example, the Cobra Rattler would need a hinge behind the cockpit to fold out and expose a head, break the tail into two halves on a ball joint for legs, and the wings/engines are simple folding.
Nothing overtly complex like Powerglide/Onslaught/Movie-line Leader Class, just some smooth transformations designed around accuracy to the Joe vehicles, as opposed to complex stuff to match Transformers accuracy.
Only Joes for this collector....
