With Hasbro celebrating the 3 3/4" GI Joe figures' 25th anniversary and some Joe-related personal appearances by Sgt. Slaughter, speculation began to swirl of a new Sgt. Slaughter figure for the 25th anniversary line. However, in a Q&A session with yojoe.com, Hasbro representatives denied any plans for such a figure, noting that Sgt. Slaughter's rights are still held by the WWE.
Does anybody know if any changes have been made since the yojoe.com Q & A?

Yeah, I'm an "official" release fan, and not into customs at all... The only reason I make a custom, is at the point that I sadly realize Hasbro's not making it, or the line's ended (and Hasbro's not making it, obviously) and if it's a figure that SHOULD have been made...
After a year of hoping for a Sarge, and 6-month's-out intel still saying "No Sarge", I've broken down and started my own, I just need to get the head in and get him painted.
The sad thing is, fans have proven that you can damn near make him from existing parts from the 25th line, minus the hat and whistle/baton. Hasbro would be all over that, making a figure from existing parts. Although IF they do end up making one in a year or so and proving me wrong, I hope they at least make new molds for part of him, as he really does deserve his own parts.
The Roadblock/Copperhead torso works best for him now, but I feel he should be stockier, like Bazooka, and beefier in stature. But in all honesty, they could go with existing parts and make a pretty successful one.
I think it does end up coming down to the licensing, but it's odd to me that Roddy Piper got a "25th" figure and Sarge, who has been in Joe's ranks since almost the beginning, still isn't a part of the 25th line when he was a fairly iconic figure in the cartoon. I had a lot of love for the original toy, too. That Triple-T was badass, and Sarge played a major role in my daytime Joe play as a kid, as well.
A couple guys on here make pretty badass Sarge heads, and there are several threads of customs. I'm still hoping they're making a regularly-released, or even a release at all (Comic Exclusive, Mail-in, etc...) Sarge. But I'm not holding out anymore, I'll soon have my own custom Sarge, even if he's not 100% official-looking.

i think since they cant use him prob cus of the name , they should jus change it! spell it slawter! at the end of the day we know who it is an how its really spelt, an besides pple make new names on stands anyway. we can jus change the name! i really dont know to much of this story, vince might have rights on the molds as well! idunno! but i sure the hell want one especially after watchin rise serpentor rise last night! that brought me back!

The problem is the cartoon and figure also used Slaughter's likeness. So it's not only the name, but the character, his face, overall attire and personality that are all off-limits to Hasbro for now. Simply changing a name to something else is not enough in this case because Hasbro doesn't own the character's likeness, either (unlike other simple name changes like Double Clutch or Data Frame).

From what I can tell, "Roddy Piper" isn't owned by WWE. The character of "Sgt. Slaughter" is. While fans can get away with making figures, a company like Hasbro would be facing a lawsuit from WWE if they even tried recreating him with a misspelled name or imitating his likeness. They'd have a hard time claiming it was an original and unrelated character when the intention would be obvious.

The likeness argument seems out the window though, as they've already released "Arise Serpentor, Arise!" on DVD with the DVD packs. If they're paying him royalties for that, why not for a figure release?

Hasbro owns the rights to the episodes but not the Slaughter character specifically (in other words they can release a DVD of the cartoon that was made back in 1986 because they still own the rights to that, but they can not make a new toy).

did hasbro recently lose the rights to sgt.slaughter? im asking because they made a slaughter figure not to long ago, i believe it was 05 or 06. i dont think wwe owns those rights,i havnt seen sgt slaughter in or on anything related to wrestling in many years, now i could be wrong but wouldnt wwe owning these rights prevent slaughter from making appearances, which he has been doing in recent years? how can other former wrestlers use their wrestling names and trademark characteristics outside of wwe. the rock and stonecold still uses those names and many wreslers go to other wrestling companys and keep their name. i dont think wwe owns those names, they are property of the wrestler theirself.
i believe its somthing else maybe the sarge is holding out for more money to use his likeness, may be he is the next mail away figure, i dont know. i do feel we will get a slaughter figure in the future. i hope sooner than later.

It wasn't too long ago that we got a new Sgt Slaughter figure, albeit as a convention exclusive. I believe it was '05... At any rate, if they did it then, they can do it again, but it may have to be another convention fig. Considering how popular Piper was (and it wasn't even a real 25th figure), I'm sure the Club would love to do it again.

Hasbro SHOULD pony up the dough to get it done. I'm sure eventually we'll get a Slaughter figure. Unfortunately no one has any idea when that is.
It's not WWE that's the holdup, it's that Slaughter's master license is with Jakks. Of course this doesn't explain the 2006 figure as Jakks hasn't produced a single Slaughter figure since 2006, but obviously there is a tie-up.
Either Jakks is playing hardball now or WWE's selling of the license to Mattel has caused problems or Hasbro is too cheap to pay for the rights.
Right now we'll have to settle for customs, but I think Sarge will eventually get made. Better or worse he's far too big a part of the GI Joe legacy not to be included.
We just need to keep reminding Hasbro that we want this done.
I submitted a unique question to Hasbro for their next Q&A that may offer us an alternative to Slaughter while we wait for rights issues to be cleared. I'll let you know what they say.
