There are a few of the 90-91 Joes that would look awesome in the 25th line but I think we will have to just make customs to get them. I got my first Joes in a month and really with the stuff that is coming out the line just seems boring.

Yes, please don't release figures that make some people happy, but don't interest others. Just keep giving us troopers with new accessories and Ninja repaints.

And for the record, yes I'd be down with getting a Capt. Grid Iron.

He was the Jungle Specialist in the first few seasons of the show how Torpedo was the Underwater Specialist before they added others (Deep Six, Footloose, Dusty) to the roster, while Cap GI was what College Football specialist?

It'd be like wanting Woody or Rebecca from Cheers, before you got the first season cast done.

Some Star Wars fans are like this holding out hope that the entire Vintage Collection gets re-released in the current format before the license expires or interest in the line dies.

Actually I think I want a 25th Captain Gridiron, this way he comes with a scuplted hoodie and would be one step closer to doing a winter custom of me. :)

Capt Grid-Iron isn't likely to come out anytime soon. Not even one person voted for the guy in the last 2 polls on here that I did (and there were over 600 total votes)! Now if this modern line comes back I could see him being made eventually way, way down the line.

i know theres lotsa other figures to make but i defintely would not mind him at all but i would put him in a sports themes five pack. Do like Capt. Gridiron, Hardball, Fridge, Sarge Slaughter (or whatever they choose rename him) and Rocky (again whatever they choose to rename him.) That would be cool and i would so buy that. but they'd probably make it some lame ass exclusive to a con and then it'd be super expensive.

I really don't give much of a flying fig for the DIC era stuff... or anything post Slaughter, really... it was the Rocky Balboa thing... he punched out my inner child and most everything after that has little to no heartspace.

As much as I'd like to see all the fans get what they want, though, I just don't see too much of the lesser-classic stuff making it and would rather not see Eco-Warriors and neon stuff like that.

It doesn't matter who comes out before who, as long as they look good and we get everyone I dont care what order they come out.

this line should touch at least 2-3 characters from each era!

I dont care if the do a Sigma 6 Machete before Monkeywrench as long as they give me a good Machete and later a good Monkeywrench!

I have no issues with them releasing any of the figures that were released as part of the original line. See, I'm not one of those collectors that has to buy up everything with a G.I. Joe logo on it, so I have no issues leaving figures on the pegs. Not everyone remembers the progression of the line. My first G.I. Joe figure was the orginal Destro and then I didn't buy another one for a few years. Growing up, my first and only Cobra Commander figure was the battle armour version from '87. Not everyone who collects these was a fan from '82 on up. Now, even when I was a kid I thought Grid Iron was silly, but that doesn't mean someone else didn't love the character. I buy the figures I want and I usually want most of them. I don't own any of the Tiger Force/Python Patrol figures or the Red Ninja, but I'm sure there are people out there that love them. (Well, maybe not the red ninja)

The 89-91 stuff was a rebirth of sorts.

Grid-Iron was the new Duke
Bull Horn was the new Flint
Freefall was the new Ripcord
Topside was the new Shipwreck
Stretcher was the new Doc/Lifeline
Heavy Duty was the new Roadblock

There are classic figures to be made but if they want to have a Navy guy in a future wave consider Topside. Want a heavy weapons guy make Heavy Duty. Want a field commander make Grid-Torn or Bullhorn.

I respectfully vote no...

I never watched the DIC episodes, for whatever reason. I did see part of one episode some years after I had got out of Joes. I turned on the TV, there was Battle Armor CC in a tank with lots of other Cobras around, VS. Joes in tanks, and they were ... wait for it.... on opposite ends of a football field. I seem to remember tanks shooting footballs at eachother. It's hard to be sure since I switched off the TV about 2.6 seconds into the scene. I still have nightmares about it. That's the whole DIC era for me, all 2.6 seconds of it. I did, about a month ago, try to watch that Operation Dragonfire on youtube. I made it about 3 minutes (including the opening titles). This thread just brought all this strange football stuff back to my mind. What was with that?? anyway.. just my 2 cents.

Sadly Hasbro feels the only way they can be sure to get money back it costs to make a new mold is to either make an exclusive with a high cost, or know that the mold will be used to make 40 figures. Grid-Iron as well as most of the Joes post 1988 have to many parts that wouldn't be re-usable. Grid-Iron's body could be a greenshirt body with a vest over it, but Freefall or Ambush would require new molds.

I remember getting Grid Iron. I thought he was one of the coolest figures until later on when I finally care enough to read his file card. Foot Ball!? You've got to be kidding! I didn't even realize that his hemet was supposed to resemble a football helmet. I thought he looked unique. Please no fridge. I'd prefer to see Grid Iron before I see the Fridge. Seeing Grid Iron as a 25th figure would be pretty cool though.

I was down with Capt. GI. For me it brought two of my loves together, Football and Joes. And to me it was just as realistic as some of the other stuff in the Joe universe (Ninjas, pshc out, Slaughter, Big Boa, The Fridge, ect...).

And I've met a lot of people who love him.

It does bring in and attract to the football market that might otherwise pass on Joes. And as we all know once you get one Joe, that leads to two, then to three and BAM! your hooked.

Hello I'm Chief W O Flint, and I am a Joeaholic.

While were on this topic of lamest characters ever,

Bring on Satin!

Or that Guy that looked like Major Bluud that was after SE and Shipwreck when Satin hid them away in her dressing room,

They need to make a sound box with 5 Female GI Joes in with her singing- "The Cobra that got away!"

I would buy that for a dolla!

I'd take Grid Iron in a heartbeat. His helmet looks awesome. Just because it says he was a football player on his dossier does not mean he has to be when YOU buy him. If you break your Joes out to play with them, like I do, then I make up my own stuff for my characters. For example, CC isn't a blundering idiot that concocts plans a 5 year old could point the flaws out with (like taking over the Alaska pipeline in that one episode, wtf), or a used car salesman. No, Arbco is just one of hundreds of different fronts that the King Snake uses, and he's actually a jaded ex-military officer who, through various means, rose to be the criminal and terrorist mastermind he is today (in my mythos :D)

10-06-2008, 12:52 AM
I think it's mostly to do with whether you like the sculpt he has / could have. If you don't like the accessories, you can always change them out with Marauder John's stuff. Admittedly Grid Iron isn't the most bread-and-butter looking Joe, but neither are commandos sent in behind enemy lines. In the US Army Special Forces you're not allowed to have a beard, unless you're trying to blend in with the local population (Afghanistan). So as we understand GI Joe to be an ad-hoc special unit within the various military branches, we/I can assume that they, like normal Special Forces, are allowed less restriction on what they do/don't take into battle. Thing about your regular army is that everything is standardized while the elite aren't necessarily so. Who knows, maybe Grid Iron is just one of those hokey guys that likes to bring his own signature into battle. Can we chastise the Clone Troopers in Star Wars for wearing violent white outfits?

The point behind many of these characters is to make them less BORING. If everyone looked like a Greenshirt, you might as well stick with Green Army Men, right? :D

Awesome idea. Of course, so many other characters should come first (Mindbender, Zarana, Wet-Suit, Recondo, etc.), but that 5pk would be cool. Slaughter would be kinda weird in there though. Throw in Big Lob instead. Uh-oh! I gone done it now...

Rampart is a pretty bad-ass dude.

It was those "generic" green guys that ushered in the success... it was those guys "with character" that killed it.
that's an awfully specious generalization. characters like Grid-Iron didn't kill the line. the market was changing, kids who made Joe a success in 82 were growing out of it by 1990, and characters like Grid-Iron were aimed at appealing to a different generation of kids, so it isn't as if the same customers dropped out because of these newer characters. there are many other factors you are ignoring to make your flawed argument against later characters. unless you can verify children in 1990 wanted the same "generic" green guys, and thus the "character" guys were the reason the line dwindled, and not the many other market or demographic reasons, you can't come to your conclusion.

Listen,
Before everything here gets ugly. I guess many different characters appeal to many different people - it's what makes our global world wonderful and keep society from monotony. I have been around football all my life, as a player and coach. As a little kid, I liked my military seperate from my sports and I still do...
I would like to see an updated 25th Zap, he was the first Joe I ever had, so I guess I could be bashed for wanting another greenshirt (let's hope Hasbro doesn't do that to us!). And in turn, all of you that want those sports referencing Joes from the early 90's then I have no right to argue with you.
