View Full Version : How would YOU retcon ROC?

Cant help but wonder what my fellow tankers would do with a gi joe sequel. You can do anything you want with it, except apologize for ROC, but you MUST acknowledge the first film on a quazi-serious level.
Id either keep things the same, forcing known character traits and backgrounds into already established storylines (cc getting a hood, baroness faking nanomites to get onboard the flagg, etc.) OR set it up as if duke is captured in a matrix-like containment pod, in cobra headquarters, and the whole thing was a virtual experiment by cobra to recon as much about gi joe as possible.
What would you guys do?

I'd do RoC as a parody of G.I.Joe.

ROC was just a lame fever-dream caused by stress. Then we pick up at the beginning of Retaliation.

I'd probably have something said about the tech (such as pulse canons.) was all part of doing a test run. The Accellerator Suits would stay as was, maybe with a redesign.
Other than that, the only major thing I'd retcon is the holograms didn't exist, so Hawk landed with the Joes to get the case, Destro was on a Skype-like call while in the Pit, and Baroness was actually with Destro in the sub.
I will admit, when RoC came out, I did have holograms in my JoeVerse, but not anymore.

Agreed, but I'd wait til the third installment as this go around looks to be just as bad. I'd likely end Joe 2 with a number 2, and have it all be a fever dream of Hawk's. He then wakes in a cold sweat on the toilet right before he dies of an embolism from trying to push such a giant load of crap out.

I would hire Larry Hamma, Buzz Dixon, and maybe a few other writers who worked on ARAH to write the thing and then I would hire Speilberg to direct and produce it.

I think i probably would've done something similar to what Retaliation is doing and add a bunch of new characters. I actually liked ROC but lady jaye, flint, jinx, and roadblock are already way more exciting characters to have than ripcord, heavy duty, breaker, and cover girl.

You bring up an interesting point. Given the nature of Joe you could just keep building new squads of characters with each film, and effectively get a reboot without actually rebooting anything.
This go around it's Flint, LJ, Roadblock, Jinx, Colton, and Mouse with some returning characters. Next time it could be Torpedo, Stalker, Rock n Roll, and Chameleon with Snake Eyes. The time after that Snow Job, Dialtone, Chuckles, Beachhead, and Tripwire. And on, and on.
Then it wouldn't really matter what director, or cast you use. Just stay under the guidelines that they have to respect the previous films continuities. Actually, I really like that idea. It gives you the freedom to make a franchise, but still be adaptable enough to try different directions and approaches each time until you find a winning idea.

yes, and introduce different villains with each film as well. I kinda wish we were getting more with this one. It feels like Firefly is really the only new one. Maybe the next time out we will get Serpentor, Zarana, Tomax, and Xamot.

Cobra would have to launch some kind of reality warping device that changed everything to the real joe mythos, or a rift could be opened that would allow a character (maybe helix) to enter a reality with the real joe mythos. Then the rest of the movie could be like it should be.

really the only salvagable part of RoC is being used in Retaliation. the whole Zartan as PotUSA.

I like this approach much more than my idea of retaining the same core characters through a trilogy as long as no one has to die as an excuse as to why theyre not in the movie. Your guys' idea is much better. Itd be cool to see more joes end up at the forefront of the franchise because of the movies.

I totally agree. As this is a story about a military unit and a terrorist organization it would make sense to come up with the plot, the missions, and the locales. Then just pick the rosters by their specialties. It seems like a no brainer to me. :/
If Cobra is planning on blowing something up, you tap Firefly. If you plan on doing some sort of whitecollar corporatist scam involving currency and contracts, ect you tap the twins. If you're planning on stealing plans for a weapons system, or the system itself, Scrapiron. That's what? Three movies right there, and we haven't even used Major Bludd, The Crimson Guard sleepers or the Dreadnoks?
So much potential, yet it seems like they can't get people who capture it "just right". RoC had A LOT of bad in it. However, it also had some shining moments. AV as Zartan stole the movie for me. BHL as Storm Shadow was excellent, and the scene between he and Sienna Miller in the Villa was incredible. I loved the scene where The Baroness kicks that chick out the elevator at gun point and then compliments her shoes was perfection, imo.
I predict that this movie will be alot of the same. Some really good parts, and some really really bad parts. I'm not interested enough to see it in the theatres this time around. I'll wait for netflix. Hopefully, it'll do well enough to garner a third installment so someone can get another swing at it.

The president uses his influence to frame GJ for a terrorist plot ...firefly was critical in the terrorist framing process (thanks to DM for this idea) and a surprise and co-ordinated attack destroys bases globally...most are killed but there are survivors that go into hiding...SE survives and he saves Scarlett which is the start of their 'connection'...they are the only ones that have the will to clear their names for the fallen...they must now embark on a search/ journey to build a new team and investigate the circumstances that led to the cancellation of the GI Joe program...
Destro and CC are tried for their crimes but without witnesses and evidence (all destroyed) they are freed...CC rebrands Cobra/ MARS to be 'good' companies on the outside (food production, medicine, education, etc.) ...with Zartan at the helm they get gov't funding together with Destro's wealth and innovation, they run a shadow operation to ultimately take over the world...
(To be continued)

I don't think anyone would object to just dumping the whole storyline from 1 and 2 and starting over completely in number 3.
Personally I'd love to see a movie loosely based off comic 1, except with more characters in it.

EASY! Just do the MASS device episodes. So ROC is the dimension the real JOEs travel to where everything is different and Cobra won.

Shouldn't have to retcon RoC it was a spot on film. I really enjoyed it. I'll probably enjoy Retaliation as well. They're just films.

I tried doing this with Spiderman 3. I made Carnage the main villain with Shocker on the sidelines as a bank robber. Never did I make the two meet each other in a back alley at random like venom and sandman did, totally bad idea.
You can never tell me that this movie didn't deserve a retcon. I mean come on Peter was doing the Saturday night fever walk. AAAHHH!!!!!!!!!!!
I'd make a screen-accurate Baroness action figure with cleavage. Oh wait, that's not a fix for the movie.
Hmm, I'd have Duke fall to his death before he could get the nanomite kill switch, so that the entire Earth gets devoured, roll credits.
It's either that, or Snake Eyes as a racist, wise-cracking motormouth.

The robocop suits would have been out.
Would have made wayans stalker and not have him be such a coon buffoon.
Kept Cobra Commander true with the original mask
Get Rid of the bullshit story of how duke and baroness are ex lovers

Design Changes
- remove mask lips on Snake Eyes
- give the JOE’s uniquely designed outfits
- make Cobra Commander LOOK like Cobra Commander
- give Zartan his outfit
- remove robot suits
- make cobra vipers look more like cobra vipers
Story ideas
- change how Destro gets his mask
- remove the Duke/Baroness/Cobra Commander triangle
- have a more accurate Snake Eyes & Storm Shadow background
story (vow of silence my ass)
- remove the Scarlett & Ripcord relationship
- not make GI JOE an international force
- not have Duke join GI JOE, have him already on the team and
have another JOE join the team.
I would cast this girl as Scarlett:

Great question:
I like what they are currently doing. Its a continuation of ROC without the look & feel.
Focus on different charactors, ROC charactors have the option of being brought back for part 3.
More focus on a more familar Cobra Commander. In ROC we didn't get to see the commander, just a pre-commander so there are several options going forward.
I liked Destro in ROC, but in the movie world they need to go up against different villians.
The future tech in ROC didn't work well. I like the focus on more realistic military equipment for Joe. Cobra can have the more advanced stuff. That's what makes them menicing.
no, pretend the first one never happened.
Why not just do it like the first Hulk? You know, the superior one.

Act like it never existed and make a movie about GI JOE lol...John Chu has a great opportunity here...hopefully...he wont let us down like Sommers and his "creative talent" dream team did the first time around...

I think the crew making Retaliation is doing it the right way. It is too soon for a full on reboot and there were some aspects from ROC that weren't that bad. Keep the good, kill off the bad. Here are my predictions on how Retaliation is going to play out:
1. Besides Duke and Snake Eyes, all of the Joes from the first movie are either killed off off-screen or not mentioned at all.
2. Duke and probably Hawk are imprisoned for the whole movie.
3. Cobra Commander is still Rex Lewis, but his origin from ROC is never mentioned, nor is any reason given for why he speaks/acts differently.
4. Destro and/or Baroness turn up in the end. In keeping with the comics, they would not be under nanomite control because that would lose the aspect of their backstabbing. Maybe they appear to be under nanomite control, but they do something to indicate they are not.
5. Snake Eyes and Storm Shadow's origin plotlines continue, but the pieces shown in the first movie stand and aren't really shown again. The connection between CC and Storm Shadow can't exist in the movie because CC didn't exist until long after the master's death. So Storm Shadow breaks out CC because he needs CC's resources to get back at SE.
If you read the new prequel comic, you can see how they are going to slide this new direction in the movie inside of the first movie's continuity. Roadblock was a member of Joe, but not seen in ROC. Maybe Flint and Lady Jaye are newer recruits or similarly not seen. Joe Colton was the previous leader of the unit. Storm Shadow always controlled the Red Ninjas, etc. Point is, whatever they explain in the prequel comic will not be explained in the movie, meaning that for the most part we will just go with the flow, not questioning where Roadblock was in ROC, etc.
