View Full Version : Keep the 25th MOSC... or open them?

I have a 3 year old son... which was the main reason why I decided to put my entire collection of Joes, Transformers, etc... into boxes and effectively in storage.

I have another son coming in a month (or less).

I'm not a MISC or MISB type of collector. I like to open EVERYTHING... I have maybe 5 vintage that are MISC/MISB because I bought them that way and they are duplicates of the ones that I've opened.

The 25th has restarted my collecting... but so far, I've kept most of it unopened. And will eventually have to get boxed and into storage.

The plan is to eventually bring them all out of boxes and display them again once the boys get big enough and/or I get a room that I would lock.

The thought of opening them in several years (I'm thinking around 5 years or so, realistically) is intriguing and exciting... BUT... keeping them all carded and in boxes takes up a lot of space.

So my options are:
1. Open them, bag them, box them, storage
or
2. Leave them carded/boxed, box them, storage

Which would you do?

If you're going to open them for display, why not buy or build a display case that you can lock instead of a room. It'll save you space as opposed to boxes and will still keep the young ones from playing with them and accidenatlly breaking or losing the small parts...

That's why you buy 2 or 3 of every Joe that you like.

One to open
A backup to keep for the collector side of you.

I'm keeping all my 25th MOC but getting doubles in trades or in lots that way I can open those or the ones with the white border.

I carefully seperate the bubble at the top, right & bottom with a letter opener. I leave the left side connected. That way I can remove them but also put them back in & they look MOSC. The bubble flips open like a door. Best of BOTH worlds!

I like to keep a set MOC and one loose but I'm not sure how long I'll be keeping that up...

I say keep'em MOC till the kids get older, if at that point you still want them loose, you get to share the joy of opening them with the kiddos!

MOC AND MIB mainly. Have about 5 loose figures.

In 5 years there will be the 30th ann line and this will start ALL over!!!
That is why I am not too worried about saving toys for my kids, in that many years there will be ALOT of newer items that will probably be more detailed than they are now.

I will say this, when I first started collecting SW POTF in the late 90s, I kept them all on their cards for a while, because I didn't have any place to display them yet.

Then, eventually, I got some shelving and everything, and I had an opening party with myself. It was pretty fun to open so many toys at one time...so it could be worth the wait, especially if you are hesitant to display the toys now because of your children.

I have a funny feeling that this is G.I. Joe's last shot at glory. I doubt we will ever see them again in their classic looking 4 inch versions. There will be no kids who play with them now to buy them again later when they grow up (like a lot of people are doing now).

Open them, I have more fun with my 7 year and 3 year old, then I ever thought I would. Then when the kids go to bed, then I get them all to myself!

I say bust out the sicssors and start cuting the tops and sides off of the figure cards: that way they stay in the blister which is probably safest and you save LOTS of space and two cuts shouldn't take too much time.

I still have all my original Joes (from 1982 to 1991) in a big ol' indexed wooden box. Plus all their filecards, still in a recipe box. So I'm keeping my new 25th Anniversary figures sealed on their cards. Since I cut out the old cards, these new figures make nice collectible pieces for me. I hang 'em up in a row at the top of the wall in my comic room, right below the ceiling. Makes it look like a 3-D wallpaper border.

But I've been ripping open the comic packs. Putting the comics, in-line, with all my other crap and keeping all the figures in individual baggies, inside a shoebox (I have size 13 feet, so it's a big box).

I kept all my 25th carded . They are pretty small and if you can get the factory cases they store pretty well. I'm glad I waited to open with the revision cases now coming out and people getting out of collecting them. Just got 10 loose vehicles and 70 or so mint figures for $150.00 plus $20.00 snail mail. So if saved me from having to buy the revisions now too and not have to open the 25th stuff.
