Just curious if any of you feel this way about the recent economy, whether it has some way or another affected our spending power for gi joes?
It probably will. We're bracing for layoffs in the financial sector.

Well, here's the thing. I'm a compulsive collector of many lines and I play a very tricky game to get stuff, which I'd rather not do. I do the store credit game, the return and by back cheaper when it goes on clearance game, the order from on-line dealers and cancel when I find it to save on shipping game, the sell stuff thats rare to pay for more collectibles game. It gets tiresome and I'd rather just buy and be merry but thanks to the Bush administration I must play games.

Something tells me that people who are into collecting Joes aren't day traders on Wall Street.

it will very soon if the lending crisis is not resolved. i'm not so much worried about loosing my job as inflation and cost of living increase in conjunction with little to no increase in pay will eat my discretionary spending money. my health insurance is going up 13% this year alone...

I used to by anything and everything I wanted within reason. Now things are tight and I buy sparingly or not at all. I have also taken to selling off my old toys (Transformers/GI Joes) to pay for the new ones. If it weren't for this site, I'd not be able to get at least half the things I have in the 25th collection.

i've been waiting for a thread like this. it hasn't affected me yet. in fact, the remodeling business is booming. i fear this is the calm before the storm though. as they say, what happens on wall street, happens on main street. i hope you guys that are hurting can find some respite, things will turn around, they always do.

I have not cut back on the 3 3/4 inch toys that I collect very much, but I have cut back on some of my more expensive collecting interests. No Ebay, Master Replicas, or Sideshow purchases for me right now. Gas prices have put the biggest dent in my collecting. I very rarely go on toy runs anymore because it's just to expensive to drive around and come up empty.

I am more concerned with how this will effect the market's ability to produce the toys for us. And this is only the begining of the fun to come.

I am not well educated about economics, but from what I have read and seen, I believe that the economy is going to hurt for the next few years. I bet this will hurt chances of seeing any real big cool toys and playsets in the near future.

ill tell you as soon as some new shit hits the shelves.
although, i have resigned to putting "non-essential" joe stuff on hold.
single carded figures, the moccasin, the skyhawk are all top priority...even if i need to call on friends on gifting holidays.
dvd sets are somewhat high priority, but the way theyre sitting there now....i think i can wait a little while on the newer ones.
vehicles are sitting in nice numbers, so the ones not named above can wait.
combat heroes and mighty muggs, though i had no real plans to get them, are certainly out now.

arch2b
09-30-2008, 09:29 PM
yep, i had thought about getting the might muggs out of curiosity but those are now out of the picture.
i will be curtailing purchases on such things as dvd sets, battle packs, sro sets as these all end up shelf warmers.

I was just thinking this lately with the market doing so bad and all. I almost sold all my army builders but a few, but realized how bad I'd get hit because all my stuff is open. I know if I did and the market recovered I'd regret it badly. So then I said f**k it, and decided that I'll just buy one of each figure and only a few army builders and not spend as much as I have.
Anyways, if the market crashes our money will go to sh*t anyhow, our securities worthless so what's the point of holding on to something worthless. My suggestion, if you want to save something, buy food that you can store for long periods - you can't eat money.

I am not hurting because I have everything paid off. Just the usual bills coming every month. So as long as they keep producing stuff I will buy within my means. Hell... besides gas and food, that's the only thing really eating me alive.

For kicks I've watched Hasbro Stock over the last week. It's been pretty consistent. I guess it should be with all of us suckers buying massive amounts of repaints. :)
Forget treasury bonds. Invest in Hasbro! It's a safe bet!
Note, this tanker does not really endorse Hasbro as a safe investment. :)

it hasn't affected me. even if the economy goes far more worse than what we're seeing right now.
let's just say i'm slowing down coz there's nothing good coming out from the 25th line right now. tons of repaints, unwanted figures, lame vehicles, lame exclusives (stupid TRU exclusives), etc. waste of money for a lame hasbro release. so me not buying, saving it for better ones.
so i don't i plan on quitting coz of the bad economy. i might quit if for next year, hasbro does the same shizzle all over again with lame releases. so why bother with another 12 repaint of cobra commander? jeez.
me? i'm holding out for better big vehicles and playsets, the figures will be secondary.
btw, if collectors will be going to more "selling of figs" route, i doubt if there are gonna be buyers as i see more people already quitting. you know selling their collection etc. i see a ton of stuff now at Craigslist. people are selling more and more lots, for about a month now, and no buyers. i guess i'll see the same for next month.

I have cut back by not going hunting as much and i was going to buy and open some revision figures that i like but im holding off. I'll still pick up new single figures and some vehicles like the firebat. But i also have cut back by not going out to eat and car shows and the movies. I dont like some of the new stuff like the fang/claw sets witch the figures with them look like trash.

I've cancelled all my preorders of NON single cards. I do not need the comic packs, DVD sets or extreme conditions.
I will pick that kind of stuff if I find it cheap.
With Xmas coming, I need to start spending the money elsewhere.
With the exception of Eels, my troop building has been put on hiatus for the rest of the year.
quintonarledge
10-01-2008, 10:23 AM
there is actually a gas shortage in the mountains of Western NC where I live because we were the last part of the country to get gas after Ike, so that has cut back on my Joe hunting more than actual shortage on money.
the main thing that has slightly reduced my Joe spending is I'm toning down on troop building. Hasbro has already released their top troop builders (Cobra Officers & Troopers, Crimson Guards, BATs and Vipers) --- 25 Vipers or 30 Crimson Guards is something I shot for, but now that the core Cobra forces have been released I really don't want to army build. I might pick up 10 or so Eels, but I don't want tons of Para-Vipers or Cobra Divers or Bazookas Troopers.

The "economic downturn" (I sound smarter this way) hasn't hit me (I'm economy-proof) but gas prices sure as shit have.
I live in TN, in the belly of the beast with the Gas Panic. Prices are soaring here, and I can't afford to drive all over town to find them, and if I do, the cost of the trip offsets how much I can buy.
I need to get an apartment near the mall area so I can just bike everywhere and only drive to work.
e: And my Video Game/Bluray budget got slashed horribly (18 games, 40 Blurays down to 4 games, 10 blurays).
I've stopped buying Transformers and Mighty Muggs and assorted other toys (Hellboy, Indy Jones) as they'll always be around for when I have money, whereas Joes seem to only hang out for a month or two and then they're gone for good, so you have to jump on them the day they come out.

Yeah, the rest of the country has no idea how bad the gas shortage is in NC and TN because the national news isn't covering this story, but it is suck-tastic here.
I only collect Joes right now, but was planning on getting the Masters of the Universe Classics figures and the 1:18th scale Marvel figures that are coming out, but I have nixed that idea due to the economy. I also am passing on GI Joe 12" stuff, Joe Might Muggs and Joe Combat Heroes. I'll try to remain loyal to the 25A line though.... I was going to pass on the movie line anyways.

Well CNN is covering Atlanta/Marietta, and as bad as we have it at in TN/NC they're completely screwed. $4.19 a gallon and lines over an hour long.
Here we just have to drive past 10-15 stations with the trademark Plastic-Bag-Over-the-Pump-Handle until we find a station with $3.89-$3.99 gas (it'll be the one with 50 cars packed around it).
Meanwhile, in Kansas, gas is $2.99 (which was a price I nearly shit my pants over, pre-Katrina, because I couldn't believe it was gonna get that high.)
Not to get on a soapbox or anything, but Democrat or Republican or whatever, maybe this'll teach us not to vote TWO oil men into the White House from now on.

Dude, it really sucks here because NC has the highest gas tax in the U.S. --- it has been around $4.79 per gallon, if you can find it. Several months ago I was complaining about how hard it is to find Major Bludd or Lt. Torpedo, now those guys are peg warmers and I'm asking "where can I find some 87 Octane under $4 a gallon?"

Luckily we're on WIC (women, infant, children) due to our newborn. THAT saves us LOTS of money. I think we get 6 gallons of milk free a month, plus Juice, peanut butter, eggs and some cereal. So the bare necessities are covered there.

I hope the entire GI Joe movie line is as bland and powersuit bloated as the stupid movie itself.
That way, I can save my money for a few years just like I did during the Sigma Six and Valor Vs. Venom years.

It's only going to get worse if this damn "Bailout" passes the house vote tomorrow.
The financial rescue should be passed. Otherwise, banks on the defensive won't want to lend to preserve capital causing interest rates to rise, which will cause companies to either not be able to refinance their loans or default and cut their operations.

It needs to fail so the "Free Market" can go back to "Real" and not "Over inflated" prices. And so the Dollar can avoid further destruction. Plus where are we going to get the money to pay for this "Bailout"... you ? me? HAHAHAHAHA I don't think so. I phoned my representative and advised "NO" on a bailout proposed on the shoulders of "Real Workers" ie, the taxpayer, so that companies that did bad business are allowed to survive instead of letting nature take it's course.
