View Full Version : Whats the appeal with Transformers?

I've seen many people post about them and I 'm just wondering what is so appealing about them? I had a few as a kid and other than rolling the ones with wheels around on the floor, they were no fun to me. I mean the robot forms weren't very articulated to play with and they were all different sizes so I coudn't have a realistic play battle with Soundwave and Bumblebee like on the cartoon. I'm not makeing fun of them or those who collect them, just curious as to why people like them.

Not to be rude, the fact of the matter is if you have to ask then you will never get it. It is the same thing as the appeal to GI Joe, or your favorite sports team or show!
It is something that IS attactive to the person, that simple!

Anonymous I presume?
Just because you have to ask doesn't mean you can't understand it.
Only if you are close minded enough will you not get it.
I myself liked the transformers, not as mobile at first but at least a few I still have.

Well, as a nerd, I like them for a nerd reason.
I always thought the story behind the G1 Transformers was very interesting: Sentient mechanical entities basically involved in a race war who had devastated their home planet and drained its energy sources and who were desperate to find new means of sustaining their own lives, the Autobots to heal their planet and the Decepticons to conquer it and the Universe.
The fact they turned into cars and shit was incidental.

I received my first Transformer in 1984, and his name is Ratchet.
The concept of a vehicle that could turn into a robot totally fascinated me as a child.
Later that Christmas, I received Starscream. Again, an F-15E jet fighter that could transform into a robot.
As I learned more about the Transformers, I began to also appreciate science and technology even more. Shockwave, the cold, calculating guardian of Cybertron introduced me to logical analysis. Have you ever read some of the things he says in the original Marvel Comics series?
I also like the storylines from the cartoon show. Especially interesting is how Skyfire and Starscream were once scientists, explorers and friends before the war on Cybertron. Starscream chose an alliance with evil, and Skyfire eventually chose the Autobot cause. I find this intriguing because there is a profound REAL LIFE lesson to be learned here: We can have many friends throughout the years, but some of them will eventually either turn on us or perhaps turn against society. I can relate to Skyfire on that particular issue.
Altruism is frequently seen in the Autobots as something to emulate. We see Ironhide constantly throwing himself into harm's way in order to protect humans or his fellow Autobots. We see Optimus Prime to the same thing constantly. In particular, there is an episode where Megatron allies himself with undersea creatures in order to conquer Washington DC. Along the way, Megatron is confronted by Autobots who are eventually forced to retreat from the undersea battle. We then see Wheeljack usher his friends into some sort of cavern while sealing the cavern with his weapon to face the Decepticons alone. Even Megatron verbally acknowledges Wheeljack's altruism after this happens.
One of my favorite Autobots from the show is Perceptor. Among my favorite episodes is the one where Brawn was insulting Perceptor for lacking muscular or weapon abilities, but Perceptor's friend Bumblebee insisted that science, technology and intelligence are what Perceptor brings to the Autobot cause. It's quite clear to me that the writers of this show are trying to remind children that each person has unique talents and abilities that should not be mocked by others. Incidentally, by show's end, Brawn has a new found sense of respect for Perceptor's intelligence and scientific capabilities.
The cartoon show also frequently introduced new words into my vocabulary. I remember when I heard Megatron use the word, "flippant" when speaking to Tracks. And I remember an early episode where the Decepticons damaged Optimus Prime nearly to the point of death, but a replacement Cosomotron could revitalize him. I initially thought that this terminology was simply made up for the show, but it turns out that a cosmotron is a particle accelerator. Again, the leads to science were frequent.
I will conclude my addition to this thread by saying the Generation One Transformers brought science, technology, vocabulary and altruism to the table, and I am grateful to the writers and animators for making it such a fun thing to watch.

And the fact that you sorta get 2 toys in one: a robot and an alternate mode (e.g., car, jet, tank, etc). I got back into collecting TFs about a year before the big movie and love 'em. The modern ones are amazingly articulated - especially the Alternators line. The 2 newest lines, TF Universe (aka Classics 2.0) and TF Animated are fantastic IMHO.

Optimus Prime is probably the best influence a kid could have when it comes to a cartoon character.
In the 1986 film, the fact that he drove through a bunch of Decepticons, and then blasted the ones who managed to get out of the way was awesome too!!!
Everyone was cheering in the audience during that scene!

I think that Hasbro jumped the shark on the Transformers Generation One series when they killed Optimus Prime.
I know that they were trying to prepare the way for the new Transformers line of 1986, but why couldn't they take a page from the writers of GI Joe?
Remember the episode where Steeler, Clutch and Grunt decided to permanently stay in an alternate universe so long as the GI Joe team could be revitalized there?
Why couldn't the writers assign the 1984 Autobots to continue to fight the Decepticons on Cybertron, and assign the "new" Autobots like Kup and Hot Rod to the earth detachment?
I look at the Autbot assignments on earth and Cybertron the same way the military views deployments.
Think of earth and Cybertron as two separate campaigns. You cannot have the same Autobots trying to fight two campaigns simultaneously, so why not rotate Autobot forces between both planets?
It would probably be better for the morale of Autobots who miss Cybertron, right?
This is especially true for Mirage, who was noticably absent during the battle at Autobot City in the 1986 film.

I have all the alternators but had to fly to different states for some of them. It pays to plan your vacations with Target/Walmart locations nearby...
Recently, while on a trip to NJ, I got all the new wave comic packs (minus black destro variant)...haven't seen them here
in NorCal since (except for the CC / Minesweeper).
Going back to Transformers, I like G1 because it reminds me of
my childhood (missed out on a bunch of them because I had to save for weeks just for one toy), I like the new ones as long as they look good in both robots and alt modes (Alternators, Masterpieces, etc...)

They're fun to play with in a diff' way. Sure you can have battles (back when I had more imagination I could make some pretty cool battles) but you can also 'play' with them at any age just by picking one up and transforming it from robot to car/dino/whatever and back-like a funky 3d puzzle ('course I got my Alternator Ravages :Battle Ravage and Jaguar Ravage into robot modes and haven't touched 'em since... those are some dang complicated transformers :) And like Joes they've all got those cool charterizations and awesome names/filecards to add to the fun.....

I agree. It's two. TWO toys in one!! Why would a child not find that to be the cat's ass? My first transformer was the Devastator vehicles I got the individual carded ones not the set. I was into Voltron at the time and the Roebeasts to fight voltron were kinda small and crappy, so my mom for christmas surprised me with Devastator, to fight Voltron. I was instantly hooked. I hate saying this to you all but I love Transformers even more than G.I. Joe as a matter of fact. My joe collection even though I love it, I would part with for the right price, my trans collection on the other hand, I'd have to be poverty stricken to even think about it.
Sorry for ALL that just making a point of how much I love them. But in answer to the question, Kids like Robots, Short Circuit was all the rage back then, Hot Wheels were awsome, Gobots sucked hard core, the cartoon for the time was Bad Ass. Its so many things. The characters were awesome, Soundwave, Grimlock, Arcee, Cyclonus, and the greatest Optimus f$#king Prime!
Finally you're probably wondering if I'm such a Trans fan, why don't I post on there site. Well I used to but the majority, (and I did say majority not all) of the members are douchelistic. People are pretty cool here so I'd rather post here and yeah I can holler at some joes once and awhile. After all they were a staple in my toy box for like five years before I stopped playing with toys.

What, what what? You say you flew around to states to get them? OMG, I've done some crazy shit to get transformers but hot-damn thats dedication. I have all the alternators and masterpieces (sharing not bragging) but I'll tell you in NJ/NY where I'm from the obsession is and always will be Joes. The alternators where almost easy to come by when I got them. You had to do some research and digging but you'd get em if you wanted em. The 20.00 price tag staved off scalpers. Also I now live in southern cali and the Universe figs are iledgedly a hot item but they are all over the place here. So Joes are a hot ticket item here too. I am obsessed though don't get me wrong, Cyclonus and scourge are being "reissued" and the only way I an get em is hrough I guy I know who frequents China. I know they ain't no Gen1 quality but I need them and I'm not about to spend $200.00 plus each on them either.

Back to the original post, I find the modern transformers, specifically the animated ones, to be quite true to their appropriate sizes - or at least, they are making a version that would work (with some exceptions that I'm sure they will rectify after everyone that is buying them has paid their $20). What made Transformers great is not only the amazing story in the cartoon but also the combiners - Devastator, the aerialbots, combaticons, protectobots all were amazing and even fun toys. Like GI Joe, what made these toys great was simply that we could carry the stories of the comics and cartoons forward with our imaginations. I'm buying transformers for my son now to play with in a few years because I know the value they had for me in learning to use my imagination. So, what is the deal with people liking transformers? Like someone said, you could ask that same question about any toy any kid has wanted and saved up for in the past 30 years.
crock master
09-27-2008, 01:16 PM
then it was about the 2 toys in one and the cartoon backed it up.
now it would be about the childhood memories,
i dont know what the 2007 interest is. the movie was a joke and the toys suck even worse. more than half the new transformers dont even transform. what is transformer about that?
the transformer movie would have been way better of a movie if it had taken place in 1985 . old hair do's and old model cars.
movies that take place in the prsent or future usually suck.
people cherish memories and that is why movies that take place in the past are much more enjoyable
also with both g i joe and transformers people could relate with the bad guys being cool aswell as their logo's.
i was never a fan of good joes or transformers. the only apperal to the good guys for me was that they might have had cool guns.

With the Archerverse, uncreative and boring homage (fanwank) repaint after repaint, the movie, and the mind numbing animated series, there's no appeal for me.
I need something new. Something fresh. Something that doesn't fall back on characters created in 1984. A story that doesn't rely on Unicron. A series that shows someone can create. Period.

It's a great, great idea and creative, cool universe...but I, for one, played with G1 TRANSFORMERS as a kid and had a couple, but I wasn't too big on them at all. I went from STAR WARS figures in 1977-1982 (when GI JOE came out).
I also never got into that cross-universe mash-up of both either. I guess I stopped "playing" with toys in 1987, but continued to collect until 1989.
But TRANSFORMERS have no appeal for me whatsover.

Sorry, I'm not a thirteen year old girl.
Anyway. Transformers work on a lot of different levels, and most of the people have hit it. Robots are cool, two toys in one, generally awesome fiction (or at least the *potential* for awesome fiction) and a 'huge' mythos to draw from. The Transformers Wiki has over 'six thousand' articles. Yeah.

I think it was lame. They planned to kill off Duke and Prime. If the Transformers movie wouldnt have had such a negative reaction then duke would have died as well instead of the lame ass "hes in a coma" line they added in. Maybe killing off one hero would have been ok, since they could just clone Prime anyways, but what was the logic in killing off the lead in both of their hit franchise cartoons? Might as well have just killed off He-Man and Voltron and Lion-o too

I always thought TFs and GI Joes went hand-in-hand. They even appeared in each other's shows! (Yes, they did, at least Joes in the TF world).
Flint's daughter Marissa Fairborne and Cobra Commander showed up in later versions of the TF cartoon. Season 3, I think?
They were animated by the same folks, comics produced by the same folks, and toys produced by the same folks.
Their shows came out roughly in the same time, the movies the same, even mirroring each other...
To introduce "new" characters, they killed off the main hero and villain, and introduced new characters to essentially replace them. Prime died, so did Duke, originally... Although they rewrote it as a coma after the backlash against Prime's death was so harsh, and they also released the movie direct-to-video, it never saw theatres. CC essentially was "gotten" rid of, and even ridiculous backstories were created for them (Cobra-La and The Quintessons?)
For the time that I played with them and the amount of toys I had, and also the character development that happened, I think I love GI Joe the most... Although I think TFs win hands-down as the coolest toy of all time.
They also released a 25th-anniversary type revival with the Joes/TFs in the same general timeframe... I got back into TFs with Masterpiece and Alternators, and won't have anything to do with the movie and Animated crap, although I respect both for what they are... I just don't like them.
Movies are also coming out in the same timeframe again, a 2-year window, but one sparked approval of the other.
I don't see how you can like Joe and not slightly like TFs, honestly. Joes is like being an assman, and TFs are like being a boob man... You may have a pref, but you surely don't write off the other as non-essential! :)

Quintessons weren't ridiculous. Transformers are Robots and somebody had to create them. Why not Bio-Organic slave masters?
I think they were, but I also think the Headmen, Toxic stuff in Joe, etc. were ridiculous too, and anytime they try to come up with "another" villain to fight the heroes... It just doesn't work as well, 99% of the time.
Clearly after 2 seasons of both GI Joe and Transformers, the cartoon writers couldn't come up with anymore original storylines with what they had(TFs were obviously jumping the shark earlier in season 2 with outer space silliness and other-wordly creatures) and they had to come up with some sort of zany new spin, so why not go a little more science-fictiony?
I don't mind the backstory so much of the Quintessons, but I do think they were a tad too derailing for the cartoon. I was more comparing them to Cobra-La, which at the time I bought it, but now is ridiculous too. Robots with mustaches is silly to boot.
Don't derail the topic to talking about freaking Quintessons, please, I was merely submitting my opinion as to their parallel timelines and similarities. It's not a topic I want to discuss further on a Joe board.

I was a GOBOT fan. (Yeah...)
I did like the movie though.
I'd have to say Ironhide and Hound are the only ones I like.

I couldn't have said better myself and i completely agree, why can't we just love both lines? They work so well together.

Exactly
The only thing cooler than big ass robots are zombies.
So the cool scale goes like this:
Zombies
Big ass robots
naked things
--PREDATOR
Rock and roll
Sci fi based army men
--LATE 60's MUSCLE CARS
Godzilla
The Good The Bad And The Ugly
--THE WILD BUNCH
--BATMAN
everything else
ok, I will give you predator, but you have to take Robocop and The Terminator.
oh yeah and Batman.
but i wasn't trying to get too carried away.
Ps. The quintessons were cool becasue they lived in Unicron's belly.
that should end the discussion right there...in one word...
UNICRON.

I liked em as a kid. I really digged the mythos. Neat story. My problem with the toys, they never looked like the package/comic/cartoon when they were robots. The legs were too skinny.
I liked Voltron (lion and vehicle) and Robotech better. Still do!

I admit I haven't seen paid attention to the new ones and their articulation, I just remember how bad it was in the 80's. I liked the cartoon back then, I just couldn't get into the toys. You transform to a vehicle then back again, to me that was it. If they had figures to fit inside them like Star Wars, GiJoe, or Mask That would have made them more appealing.
There are many passionate fans on these boards and I thank you all for giving me reasons why you like TF. Like I posted before, it is me being curious.
Oh and what is so great about Kenny Rogers? The Beard, I strive to grow a chinstrap as awesome as his.
