I think I'm quite happy about this. At least he won't do any more damage.

Rebelscum.com: George Lucas To Retire (http://www.rebelscum.com/story/front/George_Lucas_To_Retire_143109.asp)

Quote from Lucas
Why would I make any more when everybody yells at you all the time and says what a terrible person you are?

I think I should link to the more in depth NY Times article the rebelscum blog mentions. It's worth a read.

Who is he leaving in charge of Star Wars? Could be just as bad, if not worse.

Take it all with a huge grain of salt. He's been claiming he's gonna do this for a couple decades now.

But yes...also be careful what you wish for.

He's earned the right to go out on his terms. Regardless of what most fanboys think of the prequals.

The OG Trilogy and Indy movies CHANGED LIVES. The guy stopped caring what "we" think of his movies about the same time he became rich enough to do whatever he wanted.

"Who's more foolish? The fool or the fool that follows him?

Either one works.

Exactly. That's he's had the balls to keep on trying to do what he loves in the face of such heated opposition (by the folks who supposedly "love" his work) was a miracle.

Are Star Trek fans this bad? Did they attack Gene Roddenberry at every opportunity?

I'd like to thank all those who gave Mr. Lucas holy hell for the last 12+ years because his Prequels didn't exactly match the adventures you had in your back yard at age 9.

I don't feel sorry for George Lucas... he still has bazillion dollars and great hair. But this world is way too cynical now for a George Lucas movie.

From the article...

Lucas, who is 67 and still in possession of the full pompadour, told me his story of rejection on a cold December morning at Skywalker Ranch, in Marin County, Calif. He was sitting on a maroon sofa in the animation studios, wearing his standard billionaire-casual outfit — a flannel shirt with rolled-up sleeves, jeans and Nikes — while Padmé Amidala, the heroine of the “Star Wars” prequels, peeked down from two paintings arranged on either side of his head.

That is like the best paragraph ever... A decade ago I used to have multiple pics of NP in my room peaking down on me too. LOL.

He's a bazillionaire with one of the most loved movie trilogies of all time to his credit plus the awesome Indy series. Sorry but I feel no sympathy for him.

Retire all he wants you and I both know he still owns the properties and whoever takes the helm is not only gonna consult with George but follow his lead.

I'm not saying thats bad or good, just pointing out that Lucas will never be fully out of Star Wars.

And for what its worth problems aside I like the prequels...maybe not as much as the original trilogy but I still enjoy them.

And honestly once you have seen the SW: Holiday Special everything else looks great.

Trek and Gene have an odd relationship...I think most fans love Gene for kicking us off on an adventure.

But the truth is beyond season two Gene was pretty much MIA until the development for Phase II came around. When Phase II morphed into The Motion Picture the production was a problem mostly with Gene making constant changes while filming.

Gene was such a task to work with that by the time Wrath of Kahn came around they pretty much cut Gene out of the picture for the next few films.

Eventually Gene would re-enter with TNG, but even there after season 1 he had less to do with production and more to do with just getting a paycheck.

I have no hate for Gene...as said he gave us Trek...BUT I think the differance is that when not every idea Gene had was great there was always someone to step in and tell Gene this isn't good, you need to change this. In George's case he has no balence like that.

Its all about ownership...and George has full ownership so he took full control.....BUT full ownership, and control means FULL responsibilty...be it, good or bad.

Honestly I liked the Lucas who didn't give a rats ass about what people said...he made movies and you either liked them or not...granted we'll all bitch and complain about this or that...hell I've done it myself...but in the end EVERY SINGLE TIME I watch.

Exactly.

I mean look I don't wanna beat a dead horse here, but since we are......

The thing is this, I don't think he's a bad person for making the prequels. Roll your eyes all you want there are some things about them I actually enjoy.

I'm slightly annoyed that the originals have been changed, altered, added to, etc, when all I want are the 3 best films on the best format available with no extra scenes or changes. Actually at this point give me a disc where I can watch whatever version I choose. Not having that annoys me.

For everyone who can't stomach the prequels so much, yes you are entitled to your opinion and I'm sure it's a passionate one. Star Wars is huge and helped shape our hobby and what we are into as adults, I can understand being pissed and passionate but the constant attack on Lucas is getting old.

Guys, Jar Jar Binks is not going to make an appearance in ESB and fuck up the Hoth Battle scene. Padme won't go back in time and ruin the memories you have of seeing Jedi with your parents and Christian Haydenson (sp?) isn't going to screw up your vintage collection.

Same thing I said about ROC, I actually despise the movie. Doesnt change the way I feel about G.I.Joe, my collection or the memories I've made that are connected to the franchise.

How did he "ruin" Star Wars?

He made the cardinal sin of aiming Episode I at the kids of 1999 rather than the twentysomething "big kids" from the late 70's/early 80's.

And the even more cardinal sin of making three prequel movies that weren't as good as the original trilogy, and didn't live up to the literally impossible expectations that had been built up around them.

Apparently so.

What bothers me here isn't so much his retirement, I mean we all knew there were never going to be more Star Wars movies long ago. This isn't news.

The irritating thing is the comments about the angry fans. Sure there have been some ass hats over the last several years. Whoever coined the phrase "raped my childhood" deserves his own special level of hell, but they were all just rants from people with no power and no real ability to affect anything. Someone should explain to Mr. Lucas that it's the internet. Little people like to feel big here but for all the attacks, they're still in the minority. The prequels were a huge success despite their best attempts to derail them.

Claiming that the complainers are the reason you're retiring only gives them the power they never really had.

Actually, as weird as it sounds, I think George Lucas has, and has always had, a very serious self-esteem problem.

He's always commented on how his films are received. Even going back to the original Star Wars he doesn't focus on the folks that love his films, he focuses on the people that say negative things about them ("The critics hated it").

He had a nervous breakdown during the production of Empire Strikes Back (IIRC he was in the middle of a very messy, very expensive divorce at the time, too).

He constantly goes back to the films that are considered his "greatest" and tweaks them more and more in some twisted attempt at "perfecting" them.

In short? I think Lucas is kinda messed up in the head. He may be a multi-billionaire, but he's still human, and I've met plenty of people in my life that I personally would consider very successful at what they do, but they themselves are NEVER satisfied...because they define themselves by the negatives in their lives instead of the positives. They berate themselves for every perceived shortcoming and failure and never allow themselves any satisfaction with their successes. It's kinda sad, really.

That, and where Star Wars in particular is concerned...I think in Lucas' perfect world, the only people that would give a crap about/love Star Wars would be preteen children.

(EDIT: I know I'm completely playing armchair psychologist here, but really, if you look at the patterns, it makes sense, at least to me.)

Jmacq if you're right and there is a very very good chance you are, that was a helluva post, maybe we should all combine our powers and tell Lucas "we'd love him if..."

The possibilities are endless. We could start by telling him we'd love and accept him if he remade all the films with a cast made up entirely of midgets.

Midget Star Wars. We should do this.
