You do realize the rarest Funskool figures are very early ones, that tended to be packaged with vehicles like Blue Hawk and Clutch right?

Plus what might be rare now may not be rare when India gains widespread internet ability.

Funskool only produced shoddy figures during the time they were really popular in the online joe community. All the early figures and the late era figures were great. Funskool Tripwire is the best use of that mold. In fact I'd probably take late era Funskools over 05-06 American joes like the Viper Pit if I was judging by quality

I had the Funskool Superhero and BAT both at one time. I think I sold the Superhero on ebay and Corey over at Smalljoes.com bought the BAT from me. At least I knew it went to a good home. BTW, I had gotten the BAT for free from a guy out in California back around 1998/99. I bought a MISB Funskool FANG from him and he threw the BAT in for free! :D

And how would you know what it is worth? Do you have one? Have you seen one for sale ever (besides the loose incomplete one that sold for 800.00 back in 2003).

Why do you care what I spend my money on? And yep, I am DAMN serious when I say that I would pay that.

I dont knock others for what they are willing to spend on AFA items and other things I dont collect, so who made you the "Joe spending guide operator"?

Crawl back into the dollar bin and try to find your next "deal". I prefer to have items in my collection that other collectors dont have, that are actually "rare" unlike the 25th variants and US stuff from 82-94.

Plus what might be rare now may not be rare when India gains widespread internet ability.

I'm pretty confident the internet availability in India hasn't affected the quantity of funskool figures produced years ago. there was a pretty good pipeline of funskool figures into the US, the line simply caught on later after some of the early figures were long out of production and harder to come by. it isn't as if some 20 year old Indian kids who don't have the luxury of the internet but do have the luxury of an action figure collection, are holding onto those figures until they get the internet and can put them on ebay or whatever you are inferring the internet will change the ability for those people to finally get those figures out there through the internet.
Good thing I don't waste money on crappy made products of FUnKSkewl!
and that has to do with the topic at hand or in relation to a response to the topic which could be a natural side course of the topic how?

I'll give you a year to contact every person on every joe message board, and contact their contacts and you tell me how many carded red stalkers you find. I would be willing to bet my collection that you cant find 5 people that have it. You would probley have a hard time finding 5 people that have him loose and complete.

But thanks anyway for adding your worthless 2 cents to the topic. Why dont you go troll the thread with people paying $400 for an over produced over hyped SDCC exclusive gold destro. Or just know what your talking about before you start yapping.

I'm not saying there's a bunch of neckbeards in India with a room full of blue snake eyes' and MMS' with blue Hawks waiting for the internet. I'm suggesting that when the Internet becomes more widely avalible in India and there will be more people discovering that they have something desirable in another country and will be willing to get rid of it. I'm suggesting that there will probably a little bit of an influx of early funskools not "HAY YOU GUYZ WHEN INDIA GETS THE NET THERE'LL BE RED STALKERS AND SHORT FUZE HEADED ZAPS FOR ALL AT CHEAP PRICEZ" I guess I wasn't clear enough (But 90% of the time I post in Mortal Man/Glassmoon threads it's for laughs)

i have only ever seen 1 red stalker. loose c-8 and i sold it for 800.00

never seen another one before or since.

i think fanboy hit the mark with his price to be honest. comparing rarity on a scale of 1 to 100 (100 being the rarest production made piece) the red stalker is a 90-94 while the pimp daddy is maybe a 40.

the only pieces to beat out the funskools are a carded mortal and manleh imo.

I'lll actually stop lurking and throw my 2 cents in on this as well....

I have been collecting Joes as an adult for almost ten years now. What brought me back into Joe collecting was not the newsculpt stuff, not the 15th anniversary stuff from TRU, it was the fact that I found YoJoe and discovered the wealth of foreign Joe variants out there. So I can honestly say that I've been collecting foreign Joes for ten years.....early on, I had a huge desire to get the early India stuff. "funskool" and "india" have been two of my saved EBay searches for the whole time.

In the ten years that I have been collecting Funskool Joes, I have only been able to get my hands on 3 figures that have any real rarity to them. I got a Superhero, but anyone who would pay $75 could get one five years ago. I got real lucky and got a Zap (with Steeler head) and a Beach Head (red and yellow); neither of which I've seen for sell since. I also got a caucasian Iceberg, which isn't that rare, but you don't see him for sale that often.

There is a whole group of funskool figures out there that are among the rarest Joe items in the world, easily matching the rarity of the Argen 7 figures. In ten years, I have seen plenty of Argen 7 figures on EBay - hell, there are two on there right now. But I have NEVER even seen a even a loose example of a blue Hawk or a red Stalker offered for sale on EBay (I missed the one in 03), much less a carded one. Even a figure like the blue and yellow Bludd pops up once every year or two. IIRC, the last carded Bludd on Ebay sold for right at $2,500.

So yeah, among those who know what these items really are, there is no doubt that if a MOC red stalker showed up on EBay it would likely go for well over $5000 and probably over $7500. There is "rare" as is you only see it for sale a couple of times a year and then there is "rare" as in you don't see one in ten years.......

How many red stalkers known to exist so far?

mutt7000
09-29-2008, 02:06 PM
I dont think there is an official number of these that have been around. But I would guess around 10 that has passed hands thru the elite collectors and ebay over the last 10-15 years. I know the old costworld mailer had them advertised way back in the day but not sure how many they actually had. I also have a friend that says he saw a few carded ones back at a joe show in Orlando in 95. So I'd guess 10-20 that hit the US and the rest are over in india somewhere. I might be way off. I'm sure someone will post with some better info.

To The Conflict: You obviously do not know my spending habits then. All you have to do is ask around. I have spent more that $6500.00 on joes in one sitting before (many times over actually). Anybody care to vouch for me??

And I would say more like 5-10 made it over here from India in the early 90's, but most are hidden in collections.

Oh yeah, and if you dont know who Mike Fountain is, than Im pretty sure you have no idea of what a Red Stalker is, let alone what they go for.

I can def vouch for fan-boy. He's in the top 5 if not #1 funskool collector around these days. Sure Mike Fountain might have close to if not all the rarest stuff out there, but we'll never see it. Fan-boy is one of the rare mega collectors that is willing to share his collection and knowledge with anyone in the community.

I knew my 10-20 was probley over, but the 5-10 is more likely the correct #.

Check out ebay for a book called the joe files, it pops up every once and a while. There are some good pics and info on some of the more rare foreign fig's out there. Also Ron Connors Foreign joe book is a must have.

volleydan
09-29-2008, 08:56 PM
Fan-boy's got my vote of confidence as well. If anyone knows about Funskool stuff, it's him. He's spent more time, effort, and money searching and researching Funskool than anyone I know.

Along with Fountain and AireDevon, he's probably got one of the top Funskool collections in the world....so yeah, when he says that a carded red Stalker might sell for $7,500 I believe him.

id say there are are around 8 to 10 of them in the US. as far as collectors in india sure there are. they are not out of touch. they have very $$$$ places in india they have a movie business there that spends more on films then the us. just like when we all first found out about the arg 7 we all went crazy and people in Arg. are thinking wow i have 7 of the mortals in my closet. toys are mass made no matter the country. my contact in india can send me 1000 mfr jeeps at will. these funskool toys are all just sitting in warehouse. i just got 4 skystrickers mint in box. the country is full of toys.

I actually think the blue hawk and blue short fuse are much more rare than the red stalker. I have seen 1 stalker in person and I saw 1 that was in an incredibily cheap lot on ebay that I just missed out on. And I've heard of a gung ho that has been found that might even be more rare than those. but who really knows?? They are all pretty much impossible to find and when they do come up you better have some serious $$ to get them.

blue hawk
blue short fuse
red stalker
blue/yellow major bludd
red/yellow beachhead
red buzzer
purple ripper

even the bat is starting to be pretty hard to get. but good luck getting any of the above. when a so called common powder lue snake eyes starts to hit the $500 mark for moc and you can score them 10-20 a year on ebay, just think what the others will go for.

Arrogant prick eh? I was just setting the record straight for somebody who didnt even know me accusing me of not being able to offer that much for one figure.

As far as the India stuff goes, it is never ending. I have been collecting India stuff since 1997 and still need most of the uber-rare figures for my set.

I dont think that there are "tons of these" sitting in warehouses in India. I just think that the "rare" colored figures were produced in such small #'s in the early 90's that most never came out and were lost/destroyed in India by children.

I agree with this. Back in '02 and '03 lots of toy sellers in India were scouring old warehouses for old Funskool stock. That's what eventually lead to the finds of Supercop figures as well as larger quantities of some of the Iceberg variants as well as several cases the previously rare yellow Torpedo. As such, I think most of the research has been done and the warehouse stuff has been largely found and brought to the US.

There are enough Indians in the US who travel back and forth that if Joes were easy to find in India, we'd see more of them available in the US.

I just think that the "rare" colored figures were produced in such small #'s in the early 90's that most never came out and were lost/destroyed in India by children.

you Arrogant prick :)

Take your knowledge and years of experience and get the fuck out of here!!! we dont want your kind around here. Dont you know this is the home of the internet nebs. If you have been collecting joes anytime before 25th ann line scram.

There are so many rare Funskool items out there. It's no doubt the toughest area of Joe collecting to get into (unless you're into pre-production stuff/prototypes) except for maybe the stuff from Venezuela.

Between shoddy quality control, a general lack of ability to make inroads into India, and the age and low production runs, some of these things are damn near impossible to find and I'm sure there are some out there that we don't even know about yet.

If I were a guessing type, I would say that the rarest Funskool figures are probably:

tier one: I have never even seen these for sale
red Stalker
blue Hawk
blue Short Fuze
the Gung Ho variants (no camo, reverse tattoo)

tier two: I've only seen these for sale a couple of times over the past ten years
red Buzzer
purple Ripper
blue/yellow Major Bludd
red/yellow Beach Head
Zap w/Steeler head
emerald green Zap

tier three: you see these a couple of times per year at least
yellow Torpedo
Superhero
blue Snake Eyes
black Snake Eyes w/silver trim
most of the vehicle pack-ins (copper Psyche Out, etc.)

I only tend to focus on items that are dramatically different than the US release....so I haven't even considered items like the original Zap and Short Fuze or the BAT that are all tough to get as well. There are also examples of figures out there that we still aren't sure if they are errors or figures that saw full production runs.

I have a couple of the figures on the list above, and I got extremely lucky on both. Someday, I hope to land a few more, but I know I'll end up standing in line behind several people who frankly want it more than I do.

When I was in High School there was a "Toy Museum" in Buena Park, CA that sold all sorts of toys and they had a MOUNTAIN of early Action Force (Old Red Box stuff) and early Funskool. Man I wish I knew then what I know now!

It's possible you never will. When items of that rarity sell, they are more often than not brokered in private deals with people who have been networking for years to get close to the people that own them.

I guess it's always possible one will be on EBay somewhere down the line, but it's unlikely.

a red stalker did pop up on ebay in a lot, and sold for a dirt cheap BIN. But i highly doubt that will ever happen again.

Yeah Dan, you do know the guy. I'll pm you later. Also I think the only other "rare" guy in the lot was a clutch. There were about 10 common guys those 2 and a skystriker and the BIN was $110.

That lot was sold at least 5-7 years ago on ebay, and a friend of mine bought it. He then sold the Red Stalker to another friend of mine (the loose one) and then sold the rest of the lot (the Clutch etc.) to other people.

These were vehicle driver pack ins that were found around 2002 or 2003. There is a Spearhead variant, too. (Plus some minor variants.) They are fairly rare in the US. But, we don't really know how many were released in India. During this time frame, the minimum production run for a Funskool figure was around 3,000 units. But, if only 1/2% of those made it to the US, then they are really rare. But, it should be noted that there are more of these than most sellers will let on. One dealer alone got several sets and still has some left.

The interesting thing about them is that the Blaster uses the same plastic color and paint was was used on the General Hawk. You will note that the paint seems to have white primer underneath which was used on the earliest versions of the General Hawk figure, but quickly abandoned for a more muted color scheme. Psyche Out is the same as Targat. Spearhead's colors were not used in any production figures, but might have been a color scheme for one of the planned Funskool figures that never came to be.

This suggests, though, that the origins of the figures might have been for plastic, paint and color tests of the newly created figures. These molds were just fortunate enough to be on the machine when the tests were run. But, with Funskool, it is likely that these are only the variants we currently know about...not all that are out there.

What were the figures that came with the vehicles like? Were they basically the same, always a certain character? I always wanted to buy the vehicles (mostly for the figures) but never got myself to pull the trigger.

cobrasnake

i think they just threw in a random character with the vehicles as a free one and most of the time it was the same figures as the carded ones with a little change here and there to the paint.

This is like the third time those two figures have been listed. They are interesting, and Mike gave you the scoop on who/when/why. I think they're probably overpriced so they likely won't sell anytime soon.

The seller is a guy who got into Joes a few years ago and amassed quite a collection in a relatively short period of time.....rare stuff, foreign stuff, prototypes - he did it all. For some reason, he seems to have lost interest and has been systematically selling off a lot of his stuff.

I know that when he bid against me, I never beat him out....I wonder if he's just trying to recoup his investment in some of these pieces - but he overpaid for them to begin with.

Dfunk is a weird cat. Whether he realizes it or not he overinflates certain aspects of the hobby. I don't know about regular joes but it seems his primary focus since I've known him is joe knockoffs. I've got in many bid wars with him in the past over remco knockoffs. To the point that a lot of things have been getting really high priced on the bay. Dfunk paid $600 for a clear Hidden Force last year, and since then none have gone nearly that high but overall the prices are significantly higher than the past due to the high profile prices he pays.

Maybe he's bored getting rid of some of this stuff, but I don't think he's selling off even close to the majority of his stuff. Overall he seems like a fine fellow though, never had any problems with him in the past.
