Yup my 360 just went down to the red ring of death. now I've had it for about 6 years ran great till now. I just started getting on xbox live playing reach now this happens. so I was wondering can I buy a used one and slap the hdd on it? will my info still be there or do I get one of those new black ones and do that data cable thing I've been reading about?
Im no wizard at this shit any help please!!!!

The data cable is a waste of money...
Most cases with the red ring of death, Microsoft tells you to keep your HD...so the problem is hardware and not what's on the HD so you could buy a pre-owned one and just slap the HD on it.
If you go for a new Slim model, just get a Thumbdrive, plug it in and let the xbox format it...then you can copy all your files over to it and then put it on the new box...

Hmm so then I might just buy a pre-owned so just slap the old one on. will I be able to get on live like I would have on my old one?

I've had the ring of death Not fun. But it also happened another time, and when I had moved my xbox the power cable got a bit loose, and caused it..it was just the plug. Make sure the power plug is snug in the xbox itself.
The Hard drive is removable and it will be fine. Mine always has been. Nothing wrong with it 99% of the time.

Don't completely give up on it yet. It might not be the system. The RROD might also indicate a shit power supply. Take your xbox into a gamestop or something similar and ask if you could plug it in with a used power connector. If it works, just buy the used power connector and you'll save some cash. If it still doesn't work, then you're already there to buy another used system.

I see you unfortunately have joined the masses who 360's have "took a shit". I have had this happen more times than I care for. I'm on my fourth right now, and I was so pissed about it that I wound up buying a PS3 just in case. I promised myself that if I have anymore problems, I'd be done with it. However, I hardly play my PS3 I just watch movies on it. I just feel more comfortable with my 360.

I got the data cable at Target for $5 on clearance but, I haven't used it yet.

Yep you just get you another fat 360 and put your HD on it. I sort of did this, but at the time I bought a new 360 arcade (fat) just after they started releasing the slimmer models.

That's usually a sign that your 360 might "take a shit" soon. Don't worry about it though. Unless you or someone you know can fix it, just play with until it croaks. Then again it might be alright and your just noticing it more for some reason.

Ive had mine for two years, it will red ring occasionally and work again in 10 minutes. But it is EXTREMELY picky about what it will read/play.

If you are buying the same xbox as what you had (the white old style) then you can just slap on your old hard drive and everything will be once again hunky dory.
But if you are buying the new Xbox slim then you need the data transfer cable. The slim has a different hard drive.
