DiC is SUCH a funny series. I really don't think it's that much better or worse than Sunbow, it's just how you approach it. I honestly have a stronger bond with Overkill, Metalhead and Cesspool than I do Zartan, Firefly or Scrap Iron.
Plus, who can forget Destro dumping the Baroness in Operation:Dragonfire for Zarana of all people. Those terrorist organizations - such incestuous groups! Just passing people around like it was a small town highschool.

Are these the remastered SHOUT versions? If so, could you perhaps insert a disk into your pc and check it's region coding? Because I'd love to get this and the Sunbow run, but as far as I can tell they're all region 1 hard-coded and I live in a region 2 area.

Not necessarily. NTSC is simply a different format using a different color building system, frame-rate and size, but modern equipment can handle both NTSC and PAL plus all their variations without so much as a glitch.

People admit that the Sunbow show was bad, say they enjoyed it anyway because it was a "kid's show" and they saw it as "kids", but then won't extend the same courtesy to the DiC episodes... Odd.
A few reasons:
1) If you saw Sunbow when it originally aired, by the time DiC came, you were likely old enough to have a little different tastes. I remember seeing it on tv once in high school I thinking, "What have they done to GI Joe!"
2) A truly horrible opening song. Hard to hear that and suggest it was even a good kid's show song.
3) The stories were much more ludicrous - even for a kid's show. The Cobra/Joe football match?
4) The characters. While the Sunbow characters were often over the top, it was in a fun way. And you could think that maybe a guy like Shipwreck was really a great sailor, or that Wild Bill was an amazing pilot - so an elite unit would overlook their oddities. In DiC, you have Captain Grid Iron ... who wore a modified football uniform. Or Metal Head, who was just annoying (reminded me of Warpath from TF cartoon).
But having said this, I will buy the set. I've seen it not long ago and for me it is just part of the Joe legacy. My kid may indeed love it. I just have no illusions that it was once good.

I find it funny that even though most of us didn't like the DIC series, we're going to buy it anyway. The main reason I am buying it is because I frickin' love Cobra Commander and I enjoy the resolution of his fate from the Animated movie. You know the whole "was once a man" snake thing? I think that when he returns and gives Serpentor some payback, it was the best part of "Operation: Dragonfire".
Did Serpentor ever return in human or iguana form at all later in the series? I have only ever seen the first 5 eps from DIC.

I don't recall hating the DIC series. I loved Operation Dragonfire, there was also an episode that featured both Ninja Force Snake-Eyes and Storm Shadow trying to train Scarlett on how to be a ninja that I enjoyed. I think Metal Head was my biggest complaint about the series, but it was cool to see the toys at the time designs in action.

Haven't seen this version of Joe in almost 15 years, back when it used to air on USA Network's "Cartoon Express" morning programing block. Just watched the first episode and while it's still cheesy as hell, it has it's moments.
There was no remastering done to the video, so visually the show hasn't aged as well as it's Sunbow predecessor.

Very different tone. Dic is childish, kind of like a bulk of Transformers' preMovie stuff.
It's also very badly written, casted, for some characters acted, hideously ugly, full of the early 90's gimmickry problem and lacks the ability to make it work, which it could.
Being 'just a kids show' doesn't make it bad, neither does being cheesey or having low quality special effects. Being bad makes something bad.
It's sad too, EDF, DEF and Ninja Force are not particularly bad ideas, hell, I'd say Headman makes more sense than Extensive Enterprises.

One reason I liked DIC Produced GI Joe Series. Was that my brother was born in 1984, 12 years younger than I was. So by the time 1989 rolled around GI Joe was set for his age group. Which was fun, because I could share time with him. The bad thing was that since it was for toddlers and early grade school age, he grew out of GI JOE and toys all together. LOL! But I will buy it anyway for the completist in me.

More likely Shout used an international source (eg. Canadian maybe British)
Here in europe it was always an international hero. They left out the word America's in the spoken part:"G.I.Joe is the codename......determined to rule the world" and replaced it with a slightly stretched out A and later it became: ".....for a highly trained International special missions force ......"

I'm really enjoying the series. I actually prefer the animation to that of Sunbow, as it's crisper and more colourful. Operation Dragonfire sits very well against the likes of "The MASS Device" and wipes the floor with trash like "Pyramids of Darkness".
The only thing I don't like are the more outlandish, sci-fi vehicles both sides are using, but that's because of the toys that were out at the time and hardly the fault of DiC. One thing it has done is make me want 30th annnversary versions of the newer Joe and Cobra designs it features.

The voice acting and direction of the DiC series was like they had a dick lodged in their bunghole as the company name implies.
I remember in Operation Dragonfire that the "alley viper" and some other viper actually refer to each other in those ambiguous terms. No names or anything. They even recognized each other with their masks on. It was silly and I have to say Sunbow never did anything as silly as DiC.
You can almost hear the uncomfortableness in the actor's own voices of repeatedly referring to each other as such in such viper.
It just reinforced how it was a paid infomercial on the USA Network.

It's the entire first season + the Dragonfire mini-series. It's got 24 episodes total including Night of the Creepers and PigSkin Commandos which are worth the price of the dvd set alone.

I'd love hearing someone's review of "I Found You ...Evy" as that was one of the few episodes I remember from back in the day. At least at the time, I remember thinking it was a really good concept and a well-executed story. So I wonder if that will brighten some's disposition towards the series.
I also remember watching "Revenge of the Pharaoh" as a kid, over and over again, as that was the VHS that came with Rapid Fire.
"Grid-Iron you're right; this is as far as we go... on the outside. On the inside is another question entirely." I always loved the one shot of the Retaliator (helicopter?) coming in to rescue CGI and Ambush and you had the sound effect going and no motion whatsoever to the 'copter. That was cheap even to a 10 year old kid.
A good bonus feature for this set would be the one episode of SGT. SAVAGE AND HIS SCREAMING EAGLES. It's the last time you see any of the ARAH guys, Hawk, Doc, Cobra Commander, and a blonde Lady Jaye for some reason. It was kind of the real last episode of the series, and it could lead into G.I. JOE EXTREME. After that Paramount put out all the other cartoons, so EXTREME would complete the set.

It was speculated by the DVD's producer, Brian Ward on the Shout Factory Community boards that we could see the two seasons bundled together with a slip cover somewhere down the line, like what they did with G1 Transformers. But for all intent and purposes they intended on DIC G.I.Joe being two seperate releases.
Film quality? This is a DIC produced show, the film was probably destroyed after it was transfered to the 1" broadcast master. I've found the video quality to be very soft, with a noticeble lack of detail in most scenes except close ups. It's watchable, but clearly shows just how cheaply made the series was in comparrison to the Sunbow episodes.

IIRC Season 2 was 24-ish episodes as well.
Both episodes you are describing are in season 2 (which covered the late 91- early 92 era figures). The ninja one I'm thinking was among the last episodes produced, actually.

GAH! That's what I was worried about. That's just plain laziness by Shout!
Not entirely, remastering is an expensive process, especially when you don't have the original film masters. Doubley so on a series like DiC GI Joe which most vocal fans hold in disdain with no guarantee of solid sales (unlike the Sunbow stuff).
As is, I'm just happy this dang set even EXISTS
I noticed that, as well. Maybe they didn't have the new theme song in place until after the mini series?
Man, I definitely have to watch it now (goddamn walmart doesn't carry the set here!). As I posted in another thread, the version I saw had the International Heroes opening, but some of the animation was tweaked when broadcast in syndication. It will be a dream come true to have the original opening AND the corrected animation!

Considering how often DiC has been sold, reorganized, sold and resold again, I'm just happy the broadcast masters could even be found at this point.

Don't remember how many episodes Season 2 had, but what really sucked (for me at least) in Season 2 were the last 2 episodes. One was Hawk (I believe) recalling the events of the DIC series and the last one is just a recap of all the Metalhead episodes. I feel that it's 2 wasted episodes.

Well I finished everything from Sunbow today and moved onto the DIC set. Operation Dragonfire is a decent beginning, but my god was the video and voice acting terrible. The video looked washed out at times, especially during the last two parts. As for the voice acting, almost everyone is different, which makes it really bad. Serpentor sounded like he was being phoned in, and Sgt Slaughter seemed to talk in slow motion. I also hate Destro's voice, and why the hell would he dump Baroness for someone as stupid and ugly as Zarana (not that Baroness would be any prettier, but at least she has taste)? Also, the Python Patrol creation is so ridiculous. Nevertheless, it was a good send off to our 80s Joe team. Oh, I'm also mad they did not have a continuous play option that would keep the entire episode playing without the opening, credits, and previously attached to each episode like everything else they hae released Joe or Transformers have done.
And I have watched the first 9 episodes to the regular season itself, and they are absolutely attrocious. First off, the animation is extremely cheap and bland looking. Ditto on the music, and I'm not talking about the theme song. I mean the actual music in the show itself. Cobra Commander is too over the top in comedy, even worse than in the Sunbow series, and the episodes are just down right dumb. Metalhead's grandma? A football game where Sgt Slaughter is tied up the entire episode? Did they write these things when they were drunk? AND WHAT THE HELL IS GENERAL HAWK WEARING???!! Who would even wear something like that at a beach? The video however looks much nicer than Operation Dragonfire's, but no where near as good as the SUnbow show. Tomorrow I watch the final 10 episodes, and while it is nice to own this, and I will buy Season 2 (which does have the SE/SS/Scarlet episode I enjoy), these are down right dreadful. In fact, where are the Joes I know and love? I don't expect them to be in every episode, but I never even saw half of these guys in toystores. The only reason I owned Subzero and Topspin is because a friend of mine gave them to me when he grew out of GI Joe.

All this DIC talk inspired me to pull out the one piece of Joe DIC animation I own -- a VHS tape of "El Dorado: The Lost City of Gold" which I scored at a Dollar Store when I first got out of college.
Oooooh boy. This episode is bizarre. Grunt accidentally finds the city of El Dorado (natch), and runs into a bunch of conquistador ghosts, who eventually possess Overkill and a squad of BATs. It gets sillier from there.
The best bit is when Cobra opens fire on the possessed BATs. Afterwards, there's a pile of robot parts. But Overkill and the others start to reattach limbs, prompting Cobra Commander to say "They're pulling themselves back together? I didn't think we made them that well!"

That didn't last long. All three appeared in the episode "The Traitor" which aired weeks after Worlds Without End. Plus Steeler and Grunt were in the movie and Clutch appeared in the opening sequence.
And yeah, Grunt appeared in 6 episodes of the DIC series and had way more lines than he did in Sunbow's stuff. That's one of the only good things about DIC's run.

Well I just finished the set and I have to say I doubt I will ever watch these things again. They were dreadful. Cobra Commander is utter crap. Granted, there were a few parts that were good, but the Sunbow characters are extremely out of character. Lowlight is suddenly afraid of ghosts? Cobra Commander doing a comedy skit (granted, the jokes themselvers were funny, but CC doing it was not)? Voice transmitting cockroaches? What were these people thinking? I am glad to have it just to have it, and I will buy Season 2, but these made my head hurt. Still, in 6 days I have watched all 95 Sunbow episodes, the movie, and then these 24 DIC episodes. Probably the same thing people were thinking with Low-Light being unable to sleep ever, Zartan being a rock star, and robotic pack rats stealing Cross-Country's tapedeck.
I'm on Disk 4 of DIC and, honestly, it's nowhere NEAR as bad as I remembered it being. Then there are episodes like "I found you...Evy" and "Night of the Creepers" that are every bit as good as some of the things Sunbow's writers came up with. Yes episodes like "Stuck on You" are stupid. "An Officer and a Viper-man" was ruined by the cock roaches in the cookies bit, but there's still good stuff. I feel the same way and not as bad as I thought. I think what makes it more watchable is that we are used to characters getting different voice actors and is the norm now. Back in the day, voices were pretty consistent for transformers, g.i joe and even flinstones, scooby doo and superfriends. Hawk, cobra commander, low light are close representations and destro a little less but my point is that they are easier to accept now.
The animation is different and the episodes are a little silly at times but I do like seeing some characters and vehicles too that I want to collect now.

I got through Operation Dragonfire and most of disk 2. When the Sunbow series came out was pretty much when I outgrew collecting Joes, so I never even knew the DIC series existed. After watching all of Sunbow and some of the DIC, I can't say the DIC series is terribly worse. Yes, the voice acting is not as good and the stories can get more hokey (football with tanks?), but they are watchable. I think for the people raised on the Sunbow series, the mostly new cast throws it off. I actually want to see Duke and Flint. At least they have Lady Jaye. Not bad for a half hour toy commercial. I think that's what was missed with Renegades. I enjoy seeing the later toys make their appearances regularly, but also miss the old standards.

I find that it is the background music that is really one of the key differences in the shows. Both have goofy plots some times, both key in on toys that they were wanting kids to buy. The voice work isn't that big a difference to me - Chris Latta and Slaughter sounds the same. I hate the CC appearance in DiC but that is just because Hasbro wanted to sell a new figure of a classic character. But the Sunbow background music always did a nice job of setting the scene - and that is absent in the DiC cartoons. I hate to say that I can't speak well to the animation on DiC because it got ridiculously bad treatment in the DVD transfer - it is just barely above VHS quality. It is clear that Shout wasn't going to give this set the Sunbow treatment. (Although they did do some nice box art and disk art).

So score one more for the 70's porn Sunbow music over the generic "Pup named Scooby Doo" Dic music.
DIC's title theme rocked hard though.

Damn straight!
I do have to wonder if Shout still had the original music mix for ODF?
When I watched it originally, the in episode music was a weird mix of Sunbow and what I assume was public domain stuff. In general, it WAS better than the regular DiC in episode stuff, but I got rid of the tape years ago and the only sources I've seen on Youtube were the syndication airings (which used the regular DiC opening and standard DiC music)

Can I get some help with that. Chris Latta is not credited at the end (haven't checked dragon fire) or did he have another name that he went by? There was a website I saw that said Scott McNeil did his voice but maybe it was the season 2 episodes.

Just got the set today at Best Buy. I am currently on Dragon fire Pt. 3. Very bizare so far. I vaguely remember seeing this maybe once or twice as a 6-9 YO kid, mostly the intro song.

Watching these makes my want a new General, and Retaliator helicopter. Even the Locust would be cool. Though asking Hasbro for any of them is as pointless as asking for a Flagg or Terror Drome. Not gonna happen. :(

I'm on the last dvd and it seems to have gone from gi joe to sky patrol. Last episode had SP and Duke, the one I am on now has SP and Lady Jaye. They are even pimping the SP vehicles at the expense of everything else.

I just got done watching the whole season. While it was nice seening all the cool vehichles and characters, it really reminded me of scooby doo. A little too wacky for me. My kids didn't mind it. My 8yr old daughter kept asking why Duke, Snake Eyes, and Scarlett are not in it. They seemed to get hooked on the theme song and kept singing after the show was over. That made me feel like I did not waste my money on this series.

Yeah, Latta, Ed Gilbert (General Hawk), and Morgan Lofting (Baroness) provided their talents for Operation Dragonfire and the early DiC episodes. Season 2 saw them replaced with cheaper Canadian Talent (David Kaye, Scott McNeil).
So my Walmart FINALLY got the set in stock, and I got a huge nostalgism watching Operation Dragonfire, not only did it feature the corrected animation, but all the original intros and music. I'm SUPREMELY happy Shout was able to do that and not simply use the syndication version.
About the only thing that would make me happier would be if Hasbro made DiC colors Serpentor, Zarana, Alley Viper (red and blue) along with Scoop, Stalker v2 and Rock and Roll v2.

I like the theme song alright, but there is no way in hell I would spend actual money on this set. The Dic series sucks the biggest donkey dick of all time. It was the start of the decline of GI Joe.
doomed huh

Headman and Cesspool are both in the next season. Of course Headman is only there for a two part episode where he is brutally killed at the end.

Don't think you're going to find the DIC series at Canadian retail. Shout does not have the rights to distribute the series outside the USA. It clearly states on amazon.ca that it's an import.

The voices are not that great, and the animation isn't as crisp-everything seems so right and sunny. Very "pastel". But what hurts this series the most-lack of background music. Coparing the two series, Sunbow set the mood of the action on the screen with the background music. Dic either has generic music, or literally no music at all. All said though, not as bad as I remember.

Two shots every time the animation stops awkwardly and gets all grainy.

Thank god Sunbow Gi Joe was what I grew up with. The Dic series makes me understand why some people would not like GI Joe. If I was a kid and that was all I had to go on I would probably not collecting GI Joes. If this was what was being produced in the late 80's early 90's it's no wonder why networks stopped airing Saturday morning and after school cartoons.

So, I bit the bullet and bought the DIC set, as well. Having never seen it as a kid, I was very excited to finally be able to see Operation: Dragonfire after hearing about it for all these years.
When it started, I was a bit thrown off by the animation and cheap voice acting, but after a few minutes, none of it really mattered... because it was cheesy fun!
Many of us take Joe very seriously, so I can understand the hate for this product. But there were big battles, explosions, Sgt Slaughter and the Cobra Commander's return subplot! I'm SO glad they didn't leave CC as the snake from the GI Joe animated film.
Also, it was great to hear the late Chris Latta once again voicing the head snake. His voice will always be remembered as THE voice of Commander.
Now, I understand as the series goes on it gets worse and worse, but ODF wasn't as bad as some of you guys made it sound. I enjoyed the hell out of it!

Nope he never did show back up. As a kids cartoon I thought the series was good. However, it will never beat the sunbow series. I watch the 90's joe stuff with my 8 yr old, she loves it.

I have to admit...even as a kid I thought Serpentor deserved a better 'exit' from the series. I know they probably couldn't have shown him getting killed or anything like in the comics, but still.
Does Serpentor ever show back up in the DIC series? The Baroness did say the change to the iguana form was temporary.No. They probably left it open ended for two reasons. 1. It is a kids show that they wouldn't want to show death on and 2. If Hasbro were to have made another toy version of him in the early 90s, this would have given them an easier path to bring him back.
