View Full Version : Zombie-Viper - Good or just plain rotten?

The Zombie Viper.

This figure is just plain fun. It kinda throws back to 1992's Toxozombie. However the Toxozombie was just a Toxo-Viper who becomes married to his work. Doused with chemicals over long periods of time, he becomes the Toxozombie.

The Zombie-Viper is the result of intentional experimentation. He is injected with Compund Z (not to be confused with Chemical X which created the Power Puff Girls) and he becomes a chemically created zombie.

The figure itself is fantastically designed. Great articulation. Fun sculpt. I have a little issue with the lack of paint apps. His hair, eyes, and teeth need some love. He also has one hugely disappointing feature. He didn't come with all his gear... That is so freaking sad. The Comic-Con pics had him with 4... count them 4 canisters on his back. He comes with one. Weak. He also only has 3 holes in his helmet for the canisters to connect to. So any attempt at casting them and plugging them in also leaves us short of the dream and intention of the sculpt. (I guess a drill would solve this issue) Anyone willing to cast these? Speak up!

I took a few pics with 3 canisters. Two of my zombies are missing their Compund Z. Sad Zombies.

I have more pics posted on my blog. You can go there by clicking the link in my sig.

Enjoy!

That is a thing of beauty, to any of you who don't want theirs, for whatever reason, shoot me a PM and let's see if we can work something(s) out. Gonna be updating my vintage haves here in a sec.

I was disappointed they cut back on the canisters too, I am hoping that Ragingspoon will get the urge to cast these up, I do a little casting but I don't mess with color and have only had marginal success with flexible resins so having someone who could do it professionally and offer a reasonable price for it would be supreme.

Love the figure. The tooling and detail is great. Absolutely hate the concept. Still, there is not enough hate there for me not to get at least one, which I have.

Actually you're not...I feel the same. I HATED the idea of a zombie figure in G.I.JOE and had no intention of supporting the idea...then I saw the figure and I really like it! I probably will never include it in my JOE universe but it is a great figure and I ended up with one as well!

When I was opening my ZV's, my 6 y/o daughter did the 3 cannister placement, and called it a "Super-Zombie." You could make the 3 cannister ZV a ZV officer. Haha.

It's not the first Zombie in GI Joe lore. Plus if we can accept 90% of the wacky shit that goes on in the GI Joe universe how is it hard to believe Cobra would use science to create zombie soldiers?

I love it. Have one will get more. You do have those that are against anything changing in the joe verse god forbid and the fact that its supernatural OMG even though you have cobra la and the fact know one ever gets killed let alone shot. But oh know a zombie viper is ludacris! Anyways had that debate before so yeah the figure is awesome.

I love the ZV, for me it would be one of mindbenders side projects brought out of the warehouse, because the latest B.A.T.S couldn't keep themselves from shooting everyone upon activation, then proceeds to blow their own heads off.

EXACTLY!!!!!

I don't understand why the people who don't like the idea of the figure, but like the sculpt, have such a hard time with a zombie being in the gi joe mythology.

we've had all sorts of wacky shit in this line...

monstro-viper (ordinary viper crossed with werewolves and big foot DNA!)

toxo-zombie (the rest of the cobra legions call these guys the leaky suit brigade! i love the fact that the guys who sign up actually have the forward knowledge that they will eventually turn into a toxo-zombie- and they still enlist!)

gristle (who was literally the commander of drugs in the urban environment! hahah...commander heroin! king cocaine!)

raptor (bird man accountant!)

crystal ball (vincent price!)

ozone (he literally can renew the ozone!)

ice cream soldier (hahahah)

robo-joe (fatally injured gi joe scientist rebuilt like robo-cop into robo joe i always picture destro and some iron grenadiers pulling a clarence boddicker on him and blasting him apart like in the verhoeven film)

there's more, but these are off the top of my head...so with all the ridiculousness in the ranks of the gi joe line before hand...zombie viper fits in perfectly.

Good! I must get more!

I too wish he had more canisters, yet the more you inevitably buy, the more canisters you get, and not all the zombies will be using them, at least with me. It is interesting, if you look back at the Joecon pics, he does have more gear, but he has less paint apps. The helmet isn't painted, and the figure itself doesn't have as much paint on its skin, clothes, etc. I love the way the figure looks, especially if you really look and compare it to the first shots.

I will get a few - maybe three - but to me they aren't an army builder, and I may be satisfied with the two I already own from HTS. I appreciate what they are and how they can be used, but they are a little like arctic/jungle/desert/underwater joes and Cobras: good for niche displays but they don't make as much sense in the bigger scheme of things, as a Zombie would attack everyone, not just Joes.

I got about five and love them. Planning on getting five more just for the hoarde factor.

In my head, I like to think that placing three canisters on one would give them the crazy tenticle arms. So I'll probably do that to one of them and make him the BMF of the group.

Kind of like B.A.T's when they go haywire? ;)

I could see Cobra using this as a biological warfare weapon, dropping it on a military base or some such, then have a cleanup crew just kill the remaining zombies.

wave 4 was proly the best of the 4 waves. but this zombie viper is.....weird. i just dont get it. really has nothing to do with gi joe. coulda been an unmade ARAH figure like rock and roll v2 or repeater or another type of cobra viper that hasnt been made like secto viper, toxo viper or heat viper. i mean, its the 30th anniversary line. why not make stuff that pertains to the last 30 years of gi joe?

I got three, so that means one with a fully piped-up helmet and two without. Guess the helmeted one can be a bit more of a "Toxic Berserker" than the others.

I'm sure Cobra Commander would be just fine with that.

Joe has always had a sci-fi aspect to it, I actually find stuff like Serpentor, (a genetic amalgamate created from the apparently still viable DnA from history's most prominent conquerors catalyzed into a single, fully grown hybrid human with fully realized personality) to be far more out there then the idea of weaponizing a chemical into a combat drug turning the subject into a single-minded super solder with protean abilities. There isn't anything in the file card that says they are dead, but there isn't anything to confirm they are alive either so I guess it's how you want to approach the concept; Cobra is resurrecting corpses to create an army of unfeeling, uncaring and dangerous army or Cobra is using a chemical to enhance living solders into an unfeeling, uncaring and dangerous army.
But, everyone has their lines not to be crossed, there are some stuff in the latter 80's and early 90's that made me go WTF? But the "zombie" fits for me, especially with Cobra. Screwing with people genetics or using drugs to manipulate people sounds perfect for them.

Clearly the figure isn't supposed to be a literal "undead" Zombie. For one thing, Hasbro wouldn't want to sell such a thing to kiddies! They just called them that because it evokes the right feel for the figure and is an easily recognised pop culture word.

I guess the reason I like them so much is that I used the concept in a short non-Joe sci-fi/horror story I wrote nearly twenty years ago (only mine were red and suffering from "Crimson Rage", hence my user name).

I've always stuck with the Joes being grounded in cutting-edge military tech and situations. I found a lot of the cartoon show to be far out in left field, and things like Cobra-La and the Space Marine/Star Brigade vs aliens just didn't fit my ideas for GI Joe. That's the cool thing about GI Joe- it can be like "The Longest Day" or a Tom Clancy novel, or it could be like "West World" or "Aliens." To each their own. The zombies aren't for me, though.

I'ts just a bad concept for this type of story GI JOE is all about. Yes its sci fi, yes its possible that Cobra could come up with this but it just dosent work for me. This is no better then a nuclear weapon. Its a doomsday device. Coupled with the fact that the JOES alway WIN there is no need for such a destructive and unconrtolable concept such as zombies or living dead..even the file card dosent refer to them as "livign dead" its just some checmical that makes them easy to control and gives them inhuman strength (although in look and exectuion they are zombies, only way they could get em in the line). So the whole blue rotten body looks (especially the wonky card art) is nothing more then thier attempt to capirtolize on a quick buck form all of the current zombieesque movies of late. This kind of thing belongs in Resident Evil or the other countless undead cartoons out of japan. Leave GI JOE alone! Give me real human vipers and skystirkers...leave the mind control to Crystal Ball and automonous fighting chassis to the BATS...

Its conflictive with Nanomites though...so since were going back to that reality with Joe...you gotta give up some comcepts i guess...i mean nanomites are the same concept as Agent ZZZ or whatever they called it and have a lot less destrucitve effects on the subject unless deemed nessecary by the prorammer lol...

Talking about how pure gi joe is suppose to be and stuff but yet you have a guy that doesnt like the sun and lives in the swamp, you have cobra la, manimals, toxo-zombies (zombies mind you but know one says anything), and guys that can not get shot. Appearently Zombies are more devisive than a secret society of snake people who put forth a "commander" but then manipulate a mad scientists to create an ultimate ruler using the DNA of histories greatest conquerors in order to replace said commander.

Either one can be ignored to shape your own personal Joeverse.

Use them, don't use them, I don't care. I'm a fan of zombies and like this figure. For those looking for a more traditional military unit will ignore them.

I just view them as one of Dr Mindbender's experiments, they aren't really any crazier than the creepy stuff Mengele was up to in WWII. You don't have to accept the file card into your own personal canon... My Cobra doesn't have an army of these things, just a few lurking in underground labs, the result of some less than perfect "beta testing." To each his own.
