Wow, when I read Hoffman, I thought Dustin. Then I thought about him in Dick Tracy and thought..."He could pull it off with some makeup". Philip Seymore Hoffman, though...wow. He's an amazing actor, and I think a great choice as a super-villain, but this villain? We'll have to wait and see.

It should be called Batman Returns to take the Oscars. It's going to be a thespian c***fight.

It's amazing how far Phillip Seymour Hoffman has come in his acting career. I remember first seeing him as the goofball "Dusty" in Twister!
As for him and Depp in the respective roles, I can see them doing those parts very well. Atleast one movie franchise is getting great actors to play the parts.

I remember him as one of Chris O'Donnell's sleazy friends in "Scent of a Woman."

It sounds cool, but I wouldn't doubt that this is pure speculation so far.

do you know what would be even cooler? If they cast Will Smith as Captain Ameri.....oh shit....
its all a rumor, a terrible terrible rumor.
and for the record, Johnny Depp is a good actor, but not as the riddler. That one should go to Crispin Glover.
...and Discuss.

Speaking of Phillip Seymour Hoffman, has anyone seen the movie he was in a few years ago called "Happiness" ?
It's the most sick and disturbing movie I think I've ever seen in my 25 years on this planet.

"Happiness" really is a crazy movie.
And I can't stand Depp, only movies he's ever been in I felt was worth a second watch was "Blow" and the first "Nightmare on Elm St." (he dies so cool in that).

I really don't believe it. Unless Nolan says it, I don't believe it.
Still backing David Tennant. Now that's the kind of actor I'd believe Nolan would back.

This doesn't sound too believable to me. Michael Caine telling you who a Warner Bros. executive thinks will be in the sequel isn't quite the same as Christopher Nolan making the announcement. I'll believe it when I see it.

I dunno about phil hoffman. I've never cared for him as an actor and he seems a bit tall to play penguin and all, but I was right about ledge pulling off the joker so i'm think hoffman will do a decent job despite my trepidition about him. Depp as the riddler though? I hope he goes with the more serious styled, super smart and meglomaniacal villian (which the franchise has thus far seemed to have gone that direction, much better than campy villians form the old show and first four batman movie). I know he'll pull it off but i would love to see the more sinister riddler as opposed to the more comical one.

OMG!! HEATH LEDGER AS THE JOKER?!?!? SACRILEGE!! After that whole episode, it's amazing that people still enjoy getting all roweled up over issues such as this. You just MIGHT be pleasantly surprised with whomever they pick.

I wouldn't worry about Depp, he's a great actor IMO and can be as weird and quirky as they come. I could defiantly see him as the Riddler with a sick and twisted side as well as utter genius.

This precise discussion was held here weeks ago, and everyone agreed that the "get money from the government. . .for free!!" guy should be Riddler. There is no debate on the matter.
Penguin should be clearly be played by the fat guy from Mad TV, or the fat guy that impersonates John Madden on Fox (same guy?).

I say cast Danny DeVito again, he played a perfect Penguin. Just update the make-up a bit, and people will freak.

Oh depp can defintely do those very well. Im just saying i would like to see more of the riddler from the batman the animated series (the more serious, puzzleminded genius megalomaniac type) than the kind played by john astin and frank gorshin in the old batman tv series from the 60's. :> So far the only person they ever messed up casting in the new batman movies was katie holmes. I personally had a strong feeling ledger would make a killer joker.

I hope to god they keep that stupid Penguin out of this series of films... he was a lame ass character to begin with, the only good rumors going around is that Depp will be in the next one, if he is then they might as well keep Bale out of it because Depp will steal the movie much like Ledger did in the last one.

I wouldnt take this as being official. It was posted Sept of this year, if it was official word, I would think it would have come down from the higher ups, and at the very LEAST, preproduction work would have leaked out by now. Not that I am not hoping this is true, just I wouldnt bet the farm on it just yet.

That's strange, I read on The Sun that Eddie Murphy was in talks for The Riddler role, and Shia LeBeouf signed on as Robin.

You mean you don't like it when Johnny Depp plays Johnny Depp in every single one of his movies?
This is an ancient story and not true. ALL rumor. Same with Murphy and Shia.
Although, Shia would make a good Robin.
Nolan has always said that if Robin is in a Batman movie, it will be one that he doesn't direct.

Batman screenwriters David Goyer and Jonah Nolan have responded to claims that the baddies in Batman 3 will be Catwoman and The Penguin by saying that the baddies in Batman 3 definitely won’t be Catwoman and The Penguin. They’ve got a whole raft of other villains to chose from, so why pick the two most obvious?

Dude, The Sun is infamous for just making things up and presenting them as facts. Especially about movies. Here's a couple good examples:
Doctor Who rumors from The Sun - TV Squad (http://www.tvsquad.com/2008/09/11/doctor-who-rumors-from-the-sun/)

Unless Chris Nolan is planning something disturbing with the Penguin and Riddler.

I can't wait to see what the next one will be like.
The last one has to be one of my favorites of all time.
If the rumors are true, and I hope they are, these guys will unbelievable super-villains. The characters need to be written correctly though. Any word if the Scarecrow is coming back?

Watch "my boyfriend's back" a zombie romantic comedy, and really see how far Phillip Seymore Hoffman has come.
