Are there any retrogamers out here? I myself like the classic games from mid-eighties to eraly nineties best, esp. the glorious Arcadestuff and the Amiga, SNES, Sega Genesis etc. (I know, the amiga was not that popular in the states)
As well as the transpaortation to next gen consoles from these games.
My fave games (to name just a few) being:
Shock Troopers I & II (check it out if you like MERCS, Commando etc.!)
To give an appetizer to Shock Troopers - here are a few pics:

Metal Slug
Gradius (all of them!)
Bubble Bobble
Metal Slug
Thunder Force
Shinobi
GigaWing
R-type
DoDonpachi
P-47 Thunderbolt
Rainbow Islands
New Zealand Story
Midnight Resistance
Turrican I & II (brilliant!)
Ghouls´n Ghosts (terribly hard game!)
generally I say "2D rocks - 3D sucks!" :-) Just gimme a straight 2D Shoot´Em Up with tons of extraweapons and I´ll be fine!
Anyone else here who into that stuff?

That's one of the reasons I love the Wii's virtual console. Ability to have all of my favorite retro games on one system. I played predominately Turbo Grafix 16 and Sega Genesis, so that's where all my favorites lie.

Being an 80's kid myself....I was big into Atari (first kid on the block to have one), Nintendo and Sega. Over time they all went the way of the dinosaur. I recently bought a vintage Atari 2600 and about 25 games off Ebay. I played it for about a week and resold it. It wasn't the same as being a kid. Guess you can never go back (unless it's GI Joe) wouldn't mind hunting down a Nintendo and Sega......maybe when I hit the lottery and have more money then I know what to do with I'll get them :)

yes, that´s the stuff I´m talking about. How great it was when MAME came some years ago - finally the way was free to all the great aracde games which as a child I mostly couldn´t play as often as I wanted to because back in the eighties (and even now) arcade machines were terrible expenisve in germany.
Way better was Italy where they had great arcade halls at low prizes for a play! Great holidays that were back in the days!

The whole "money thing" was based on the times when I was a kid - back then there was no thing like MAME. ;-)

Yeah, i own a Wii specifically for the virtual console thing. I have a few Wii games and those are great, but the goddamn wii motion control gimmicks just die out too fast. 2D for me!

I remember when $5 in quarters was a fortune and would last me all afternoon with my friends at the local arcade. Then came the day of the "Wonderland/Nickel World" arcade where you pay an entrance fee ($1.50 when I started going) and then all the games are either free or run on nickels. Ahhh... Those were the days... :)

If you like Contra and espc. if you like Commando you just got to check out Shock Troopers I & II. Both games absolutely rule! Get MAME, get the ROMS and enjoy it!

This is the first generation of game systems(Wii,ps3,360) that I've sat out. I guess the more realistic the games look, the less interested in them I am. Every once in a while the gamecube and Dreamcast gets fired up, but lately its been Nes or Snes. When I move back to Florida I'm gonna get my old Atari 2600 from mom's garage and have a retro 80's weekend. Nothing but 80's movies, music, and games.

I LOVE the new Bionic Commando and I am eagerly awaiting Mega Man 9! The funny thing is I play more 360 live arcade games than anything. Most "Main Line" games suck.

I've got a Wii and the only reason I'm keeping it is for the Virtual Console. I check every Monday to see if they've released the original NES Contra. Of course, no luck. They do have the Super Nintendo version though which is pretty awesome (I still haven't beaten it). They also just released Super Mario RPG this past Monday which I need to check out. I never played it but heard it was awesome. I've got 2 Atari 2600's, 2 NES's, 2 SNES's, a Sega Genesis, a Dreamcast, a PS3, and a Wii. Maybe it's my age (31) or maybe it's the games, but there was nothing better than the NES/SNES days! Zelda is still one of my favorites.

I gotta say, if you're a fan of early video games/arcades you should visit Portland, Oregon check out Ground Kontrol Classic Arcade : Home (http://www.groundkontrol.com/). IT"S A BAR AND AN ARACDE.
What more do I have to say.
I do admit that I love video games in general. The invention of MAME, Emulators. You can even own an XBOX 360 and still play all the classic games through an emulator. With next-gen consoles you have to search high-and-low to find a game that is truly incredible. It's a huge business and kind of like "Hollywood" there is a lot of crap out there.
My greatest experience was completing CONTRA with my best friend in the third grade. That momment was incredible and have been hooked on 2 or more player games since. In High-School I think I might have spent $4.75 Playing G.I.joe on the arcade nobody joined in so i had to do it all by myself. Top five games of all time.
Regardless to say I love Video Games...this coming from a man who does not own any console, Just the SnesX9, Logitech Controller, and a MAC. Thanks for taking me back...

Me and my Gf still bust out the original NES. I think NES is still the King with Super NES a close second. I stopped buying systems after PS2. Those games can suck you in and who really has the time? I can say this i did take down Original double dragon yesterday in 11 mins. Machine Gun Willie is a major pain in the ass as well as the blocks that pop out at the start of mission 4. Other than that the game is a snap.

Nice. Interesting that it has a Ms. Pac kick plate. I wonder if that cab was pieced together. (Sorry I've been in the Arcade business for 19 years now I notice things like that)

I built a MAME cabinet from scratch last year. It was a fun project, and really improves the emulation experience.

what the hell is MAME?
Oh man, I almost envy you not knowing what MAME is! When it sets in what it is, and all you can play is an awesome feeling if you're an old schooler:) I discovered it in '01 and haven't looked back since. Just Google it;)
I love the old stuff, you just pick it up and play. When I'm stressed, I'll actually play some Donkey Kong, maybe Balloon Fight. I can even sit down with my kids and play (In fact my 8 year old had the time of her life playing "Contra" with me two days ago). The old games were wonderful in their simplicity. Nowadays games, you have to buy a Player's guide that walks you though the whole thing, and that's no fun.
