View Full Version : OKAY - Retaliation is G.I. Joe Extreme....

I saw the trailer. It looks nice...not as high tech as Rise of Cobra. This looks a lot like G.I. Joe Extreme. The key with Extreme was that SKAR were more ruthless, and threatened outright invasion of America and Inter Alliance (the U.N.). The Krake Cobra Commander is just like Iron Klaw. Firefly is less like the classic character, and more like Inferno.
In the first issue of the G.I. Joe (Extreme) comic from Dark Horse, Project G.I. is wiped out, with the lone survivor being the enigmatic G.I. Joe. Throughout the short-lived series, this Joe emerges years later as a secret helper to Stone and the Extreme Team - whose origins were divorced from the classic squad - the lone holdover being Sgt. Savage.
So after 16 or so years, we get more of G.I. Joe Extreme for a live action treatment. Thank you Jon Chu...that's all you did. At least The Rise of Cobra was a high tech, sci-fi origin tale of Cobra. I'll go see this film; I really like the stars and characters involved. But it wasn't necessary to do a walkaway from ROC in the first place. A remastered version of G.I. Joe Extreme, with a little Renegades thrown in...really original....

yeah, because a completely original military action movie with absolutely no similarities to any other media ever produced is what we all deserve as life long joe fans.

I thought it was a homage, to the GI JOE ARAH Sunbow Cartoon 2-parter "Worlds Without End". Where, in this story we find out that this is an alternate universe (just like ROC was totally a different Joe-verse), the GI JOE team is killed off. Cobra has taken over America. "The Lincoln Memorial is now the Cobra Commander Memorial", "Dreadnoks are cops", "The government testing the Weather Dominator at the proving grounds" etc, etc... Flint and a handful of Joe's (from the main universe) Retaliate's against Cobra and team up with the Baroness to start a Cobra Civil War.

I didnt see Extreme so im going by the recent cartoon that just ended, Renegades. A few JOEs running around because they were setup and Cobra is seen as the good guys.
That is basically what is going on in the movie.

You do realize that Chu came out and said that he grew up watching Extreme don't you? Probably watched it on the sucky USA Network. Chu is not of the ARAH saga. He was still in diapers.
I sort of expected things to be like this.
The best part was the 'Duke's of Hazard" El Camino scene with Bruce Willis. I think that was some deleted scenes from RED that we saw. They just spliced them into this film.
Whatever works you know!

Nothing you just said made the first post in this thread make any sense. I am however shocked that anyone "grew up on Extreme" considering re-runs of Sunbow and Dic were more commonly aired even in that time period. I wonder what the Zombie Land guys who actually wrote the movie grew up on.

I had a whole bunch of shirts that said "Hi I'm Awesome" printed up right before the Miz stole my idea. Now I'm probably going to print up new shirts with front and back prints. Front says "Head Hunters" and the back says "Where da bitches at?". But that's still not that funny.

Back when he first started talking about the brand, Chu actually identified himself as a child of the DIC era lol believe it or not! He talked about the "got to get tough" theme song, etc.

Oh No! The GI Joe movie took storylines from GI Joe cartoons and comics!?
It's just like those knockoff movies like The Stand and Jurassic Park and others who stole the stories from Books by Stephen King and Michael Crichton!

I think the story more fits in with the marvel run of G.I.Joe. I don't see much extreme in it.
Roadblock went undercover there as well, being hunted by the government as a fugitive. They hid at someone who had connections to gijoe there as well.
I see marvel in the storyline
Sigma Six in some of the costume designs
And Resolute in Snake Eyes's mask.

I saw a pretty cool GI Joe movie when i watched the trailer. Hell i didnt dwell on it enough to try to compare it to different eras of GI Joe. It looks better than ROC which is a good thing.

I'm only seeing, GI Joe Retaliation here not Extreme. Maybe, the ninjas cliff scene. That looked extreme to me, ninjas hanging by ropes swinging swords and Bruce Willis charging in firing from the El Camino was extreme.
