View Full Version : Why no returning cast members?

I know that most of the cast from ROC won't be returning but I still have one question, why? The cast wasn't the problem for the first movie, it was just a poor script and bad direction (I'm not talking about Stephen Sommers). If they had gone the gritty, war-film direction that the sequel is taking, it would have been a better film. So why did they need to get rid of the first film's cast?

Because the more you can distance yourself from the feces that is ROC the less you're gonna stink.

if you saw the first film....you'd understand. the acting (such as it was) was just downright atrocious to compliment the atrocious scripting and vomitus directing. Im going into the second joe flick with lowered expectations...while the trailer looks enticing...imma hold on till i see the film...no need ot go ohhh uber badass just to find out its not. Low expectations means less expectations for the flick so if it sucks...oh well..but if it rocks...hooray!

If they open with a scene of Tatum Channing getting blown into tater tots I will be the happiest camper ever. It would be akin to Lucas starting Rise of the Clones with Jar Jar Binks getting split in half by a lightsaber......

they should have kept Rachel Nichols IMHO, she was a decent Scarlett. The rest I'm glad to see gone.

Weird, the only person I wanted gone was the only one that stayed. :/

It's to reinforce the "soft reboot" that the movie is supposed to be. Yes, it's a sequel, but it's a "whole new direction."

Could be that the "old" team is just in reserve/off-screen (maybe we'll get a comic-book explaining what happened/happens with them), or maybe they get blown away in that big attack. Hard to say. But clearly the reason is to distance itself from the first movie as much as possible while still technically being a sequel.

And yeah, when Marlon Wayans turns in one of the strongest performances in your film....

Snake Eyes is still there. The rest of the cast is just filler between the ninja saga action.

So true lol! Channing Tatum must have the best agent in Hollywood...I'm not sure how he gets so many damn roles.

I am hoping beyond hope that they throw us haters a bone and the person that Roadblock is pulling the dogtags off in the trailer is Tatum's Duke.

I would literally stand up and cheer in the theater.

An additional factor may be that actors returning in a franchise tend to get a huge pay increase for each film.

Since they were trying some new things in the film anyway, may as well put that money towards Bruce and the Rock, who are far more likely to draw an audience.

I personally like that they took advantage of the huge number of Joe characters available without making it too crowded.

Well Selina Miller flat said she wouldn't do it, so there is her reason.

I read somewhere Quaid had some schedualing issues, but wasn;t too entusiastic about returning either.

To be blunt, Waynes was annoying (but less so than I thought he would be) and Rachel Nichols was window dressing, no huge lost there either.

However I was suprized no Heavy Duty, I suppose with Roadblock they wanted to avoid confusion, but he was one of the few characters I liked in ROC. Then again I watched and kept thinking back to Mr. Eko too LOL. Maybe his gattling gun should have had scripture scratched into it LOL.

I didn't notice Heavy Duty had a character in RoC. Ohhh I remember! He's the guy who handed stuff to Duke and Ripcord and said "Here you go.".

Yeah, this is gonna be a lot of fun without Scarlett & the Baroness. How the hell do you make a GI Joe movie without Scarlett & the Baroness? Who the hell wants to see a GI Joe movie without Scarlett & the Baroness? That's like making a GI Joe movie without Snake Eyes & Storm Shadow. They sure as shit left those 2 in of course even though one of them died in ROC.

Blame Stephen Sommers for fucking the first movie up so bad that they couldn't use them.

Can we all agree now that it was just an extra and not Jinx in the first movie?

I'm thinking it has something to do with the script. Not having them apart of this sequel, also means their characters aren't killed off in the initial scenes that the trailer is alluding to thus, the characters could come back in a sequel if they feel the need to.

It's kind of like how IDW introduces a ton of jobbers right before killing them instead of actually showing characters we're familiar with.

One of them died and comes back all sweaty and without a single cut scar.

I didnt think Quaid was that bad at Hawk and I thought he was signed on for 2 more. Maybe they bought him out. They sure did base it all the rock though not that Im complaning. The rock is a bad ass mofo. However, I did kind of get a vibe that bruce willis isnt in that much of it like a cameo kind of like arnold's cameo in expendables but a bit longer.

keep in mind, this team was called alpha. it stands to chance that this movie is about team beta or delta.

they are all dead...
But if you die off camera that's not really dead
Other than Duke (who it appears dies in the first 5 mins of 2)
the rest were cool.

I personally think that the entire force is killed except for the few that we see remaining in Retaliation. I don't really like specualtion, but I personally didn't think the actors from ROC should have been cut save for ripcord.

On another thought, I do recall that Rachel(Nichols) said that all of the cast were signed for 3 films. Who knows at this point?

I got to agree with the first poster, the cast wasnt the problem

it was story execution and miscasting ( Cobra Commander from the first film for example , Joseph's a great actor but he is NO CC )

HOWEVER I LOVE seeing THE ROCK as Roadblock and the rest of the new characters really feel the part ( would like Jaye with short hair and maybe a hat though ). Well no beard on bruce is a little wierd feeling for joseph but not a big problem with me.

I just hope ( and I am sure they wont ) kill off Duke, Scarlett Heavy Duty.

again the biggest problem of the first movie was script and those dam power suits.

The old Marvel comics didnt always have the same returning characters every month. although that was due mainly to Hasbro and there needing to seel new toys. So Im pretty sure thats Hasbro is doing again. Dosnt bother me. Maybe the next one will be a reunion show

Nevahhh!!! Women, I say! I will take that knowledge to the grave!! Harumph!

But seriously though, fanboys grasp at stuff too much, I remember watching Captain America with my buddy and Hodge was the name of the guy that bullied Steve Rogers. My buddy who knows a little too much about Marvel, said, "That must be Cameron Hodge," "They will definitely have him return as a villain in a future Marvel movie." I was like, "Huh"?

Know what, maybe they just decided to focus on the new characters for now and maybe bring back ROC's cast for a cameo or sequel. Then again, this team seems to be based in the American dessert so maybe the Alpha team is still in Egypt.

Maybe they spent all their money trying to get The Rock and Bruce Willis.
