Break down your thoughts on the new.....52, JLA, Incredible Hulk's new run, Transformers...anyone doing Kirby Genesis? IDW Godzilla titles? etc etc.

So far...
I was bannanas over Crimson Empire making it's return and I haven't read #2 (which is right next to me) yet but I loved #1...Kir Kanos is the man, and I love this title.
Action Comics has been cool. I loved what Morrison did with 1 and 2....3 honestly was a bore fest but there was a some bounce back in 4. I'll stay on for next month and see where it goes.
Aquaman is absolutely fantastic. It's Geoff Johns, how is it gonna be bad?? I love how it kinda makes fun of itself, it's ironic...it's just cool as hell. This is the coolest Arthur has been.
JLA--because you pretty much have to.
Incredible Hulk: Ok look we're only on #2 and this is era of Hulk brings me back to the gray/green merger of the early 90's...it was just...different. This is generally my favorite super hero so I'll give it a few issues to see how it does filling Greg Pak's shoes.
Detective Comics: I know some of the other Batman titles are selling better but I'm really enjoying this Joker/Dollmaker arc.
Deathstroke: Take that Deadpool. Good, fun, violence.
TMNT: I absolutely LOVE this title! Best the Turtles have looked since their beginings in the Laird/Eastman heyday.
Picked up Voltron #1 for the hell of it...havent read it yet, thumbed through it, looks cool...we'll see.

Not as much as I was.
Transformers
Rachel Rising
Thunderbolts
Annnnd that is about all.
When it strikes me I grab a Star Wars Trade paperback here and there as I'd like to eventually catch up on that since I read the novels but otherwise thats it.
I used to read all the X-books (and I mean all if it had a mutant in it be it solo book, mini series,or team book I bought and read it) but got fed up with the direction right around the time the brought in the X-Treme X-Men books.
I tried like about a year ago to start picking up Deadpool books again but found it very silly that there were something like 5 titles.
I also used to read all the Avengers books for a while right after the original series ended I started all the Avengers books but gave the hell up during the seemingly never ending Skrull Invasion story awhile back.
I used to buy Star Trek books but gave up after Marvel's last run at it.
I also used to buy Green Lantern started after Hal went nuts stopped once Marz left the book.
Read a good deal of Wildstorm until it went belly up.
From time to time I grab some of the New Warriors books.
The other things I collect is the 90's Marvel UK books and the 2099 books.
That about covers my stuff.

The new TMNT series is really awesome. So happy they brought it back to the medium it belongs!
used to be Hardcore into Hellboy, BPRD, Walking Dead, and Usagi Yojimbo but i've really slowed down on my comic buying/reading lately. Now i pretty much just settle for trades. And even I'm collecting them less and less :(

I pretty much read everything. Kind of have to for my night job, lol.
Aside from X-Men/Avengers/JLA family of books (note: don't get most of Batman, Aquaman was boring, Deathstroke was bad):
TMNT is great
Oni Press' Sixth Gun is one of the best books out there.
Th3rd World Press' The Stuff Of Legend and Archaia's Mouseguard are both beautiful books.
IDW's Locke & Key

The new Voltron was HORRIBLE. Check the link in my signature, did a review on it last week.
Wow, I actually just read your review and was thinking about what I'm about to say while driving home much earlier before I read it.
Having said that......
I read Voltron late last night, I didn't think it was horrible but it needs some big changes in the art department. Honestly I find this alot with Dynamite. The artwork is either a 10 or bad enough that I have to hold it up to a light to make out what the hell is going on. The latter is the case with Voltron.
When he was grappling with the Robobeasts I couldn't figure out what in the world was going on, save for his sword being stuck in a building....which it never showed him actually losing the sword.
The art in the panels is jumbled and the colors don't contrast enough to help me begin to understand the fight itself.
I don't have a problem with the pilots on the ground holding off the troops as I'm hoping issue #2 will explain this, I'm willing to stick with it for a few more issues.
Back to Dynamite though. I was ecstatic over Robocop/Terminator: KillHuman but the artwork, while you can atleast distinguish whats going on it's just weak. These are 2 monumental characters. I need to feel that they are made of unforgiving metals. I want to see big texture and color and it's just.....I dunno, busch league.
If you gave Voltron 1 out of 5, I'll give it....2 out of 5 lol, maybe it is horribe I just don't want it to be!

I like Deathstroke, it's not great and I have no idea why they put the villian on the cover of #2 when he had about 2 panels worth of worthlessness but I still like it. It's something I don't have to get too deep into. Just badguy and violence. I do like the artwork but I don't forsee this title sticking around too much.
Demon Knights: I dropped it after #3. I was looking for a good "sword and sandal" tale, I'm all about an anti-hero but this is just too...too...wordy. There is literally too much text, I still don't know why the Queen's Horde is questing or who anyone really is.
Swamp Thing: So far keeping my attention.
Punisher: Another comic I really like. Sorta like a PG-13 version of the Ennis hey dey, straight forward artwork and low brow story telling. They arent redifining the character, which is perfect.
Godzilla Gangsters & Goliaths: As a G Fan I absolutely loved this story and I'm a huge fan of Layman did with Toho. If it doesn't get an A+ it's because of the artwork. These are gianormous monsters that topple buildings, I want depth and texture not thin squiggly lines. I enjoyed the story so much I was able to see passed it.
Last thought, is it me or are the DC titles just taking awhile to kick into high gear? I like them for the most part it just seems they are taking their time with getting through their 1st arcs into something more relevant.
I give it up to JLA though, Wonder Woman's arrival and character overall was very cool.

This is what I'm reading monthly:
Action Comics (Still enjoying it so it's not on the chopping block yet...)
Hawk & Dove (Honestly like it for what it is. I think I'm only picking it up due to Dove)
Huntress (Not part of the 52 but since it's a mini I'll go with it)
Red Lanterns (Pretty boring...might be dropped after Dec. issue)
Batwoman (I just love the art. It stays for time being)
Green Lantern (Since it continues off from where is last left, I'll keep at it)
Superboy (Only interested to see where it ties in with Teen Titans, plus need to see what will happen to Rose)
DC Universe Presents (Dropping as soon as Deadman story is done)
Justice League (I'll keep with it till first arc ends)
Nightwing (Wasn't gonna keep but am enjoying the story)
Red Hood and the Outlaws (Only keeping it on list to see what happens to Kory and Roy, otherwise don't care much to read any of the Jason Todd sections. Waste of money...)
Supergirl (Actually better read than I imagined, it stays till it gets stale)
Batman: The Dark Knight (Only Batman title I'm picking up and I like it. Will stay till after the Bane encounter in Febuary)
Green Lantern: New Guardians (Another iffy title at first but I'm gonna stay on board)
Superman (Pretty boring. Will probably end up dropping this one)
Teen Titans (This stays no matter what)
Voodoo (Will stay if the writing is consistently good)
Incredible Hulk (Don't like it so far)
Ultimate Spider-Man
Ultimate X-Men
Superior
Kick Ass 2
Haunt
Invincible
Walking Dead
Amazing Spider-man
Captain America
Any Star Wars
Transformers
Detective Comics (through the first arc, then I'll re-evaluate)
Batman (same as Detective Comics)
I think I'll look to add Winter Solider primarily because of Brubaker.
I'm was a Marvel guy and dabbled in DC until Final Crisis. That train wreck of a series and the way DC Editorial handled 52/Final Crisis, etc, turned me off. My interest in the Bat titles were piqued when they rebooted and I saw the art. THe story in both have held my interest.
I've even pulled back from Marvel. I am too burned out on events and Bendis writing every other damn Marvel book. His style of dialog really wore on me. That and the fact his third acts are very weak. But I appreciate Marvel's long term outlook and using the events to shape the entier universe for the following year.

Right now, reading American Vampire, Scalped, Fables, and Northlanders. Mouse Guard and Hellboy whenever they come out. Doc Frankenstein if it ever returns (not likely but I refuse to let them take it off my list)
Still in the courtship phase with Blackhawks.

I got back into comics this year after a 25 year hiatus. I've been going back and reading events that I missed, and I agree about Final Crisis. It was a mess. I had a tough time finishing it. Crisis On Infinite Earths was one of my favorites as a kid, and this was a joke in comparison.
I suggest reading Blackest Night, though. MUCH, MUCH better!!!!! Infinite Crisis was also better, if you want to go back a little further. Definitely check out Blackest Night, though, at least the main title and the Green Lantern book. A lot of fun,IMO.
I've just borrowed Brightest Day from a friend. I just missed that one, so I have to check it out. He said it's not as good, but that's fine. Blackest Night would be tough to top.

Ive just read the first issue of "Archie meets Kiss".
Its no masterpiece, but really funny and easy reading.
Ive tried the Blackhawk and Easy Company/Sgt. Rock relaunch, but Ive dropped them after one issue. Except for the names and some slim parallels in the origin, they have nothing in common with the original concept. Nobody would shoot Prince Valiant to the moon, or ?

Hulk unfortunatley is not what I expected. I thought this was going to be a great time to jump on with a new arc, the problem is it's not really a new arc at all.
It's carrying on with where Pak left off and this whole Red Hulk nonsense is just that--wtf Marvel, I don't need 50 Hulks. Or 50 of the same character with a slight difference, it's just annoying.
For me to not buy a Hulk comic I must really not like it. I thought the begining with Planet Hulk was just awesome but it progressively got ridiculous--and it's reach the pinacle of ridiculous right now.
Just screw it...go back to Hulk Vs Ross on a Air Force base "Puny human" and "Hulk Smash" would be a breathe of fresh air compared to this crapola.

Pit, are you getting the two titles confused?
Incredible Hulk stars Bruce Banner/Hulk and is the title that launched at the end of Greg Pak's run.
Hulk stars Gen. Ross/Red Hulk and has been starring that character for awhile now.
PitViper
01-16-2012, 07:50 PM
Troy, No I honestly didn't know about the Ross/Red Hulk title, I've only recently been back in the loop.
What I mean is in general I'm dissapointed in the turns the character has taken. I was really hoping that the relaunch was going to be a bit of a fresh start--almost along the lines of what the 52 is doing.
It's not, it's actually picking up where Pak left off. More family members that are Red Hulk's, the seperation between Hulk and Banner....it's just......enough. That's how I feel anyway.
Look, I'm not saying you can't do new things with a character, I understand you have to grow and change in order to attract new readers and keep the old ones checking in every month but there should come a time when you go back to basics, maybe "reset" a bit. If that's what this Incredible Hulk is in fact, I just don't like it.
And this is coming from a guy who grew up loving Mr. Fixit, The Pantheon, Grey/Green combining to make the "Bruce/Hulk" combo...I just think the last few years for Hulk started great and turned to crap.
Just my opinion though.
Wait...Red Hulk?! Really?! Still?! Why??.we don't need another muscled out gamma monster!

TMNT from IDW, and Marvel's lazy comicbook version of Halo: The Fall of Reach. I bought the novel too, and have already identified multiple differences, bearing in mind I have the latest edition. I was also set to start collecting Moebius's work, until my eyes bled at the huge price tags they all carry. Also need to buy Battle Angel eventually. I've read the whole series 3 or 4 times, but never owned it.
I arrived late to the party for the new Mark Waid Daredevil series but it is fantastic. Paolo Riveria is a perfect compliment to Waid's plots and a welcomed contrast to Lark, Maleev, and the others. I was such a fan of the Bendis DD and Brubaker did a good job continuing that style, I was hesitant to get into the new, lighthearted DD. But Waid is a compelling storyteller and there is just enough darkness under the surface to connect it to the previous storylines.

Daredevil was good but it didn't make the cut (probably because I've never been a huge fan).
I get 60-80 bucks worth of books a week.
Sweet Sassafrasey, that is a ton of books. I'm good for about $40 a month. I don't have the time as I used to. Plus I don't read any DC so they cuts out a huge selection right there. I have the first 2-3 (can't remember) Chew trades. I thought it was a decent read, but nothing I would read long term. If I didn't get them cheap at Borders, I can't say for sure that I would've checked the series out. But it seems to get a lot of love around the internets.

Never read Chew but it's supposed to be pretty good.
I didn't like Irredeemable. Read maybe the first 12 issues or so. It's ending around mid-30s. Next month or two.

I just read "Carnage: USA" 1-3 last night. Damn! They've amped up Carnage's powers just a tad, huh?
I also see that they've gone wayyyyy overboard with the symbiote stuff. I knew about Anti-Venom, Toxin, etc. but they have military guys with symbiote "bio-weapons" now? Sheesh!
I love Clayton Crain's art. Very dark and sinister. Drawing characters like Carnage and Ghost Rider is right up his alley.
I gotta make sure I get 4 and 5 of this series and go back and get the last one.

Nice. I picked that trade up cheap a while ago at my local shop. It's that story that helped get me into comics to begin with!
The cover for #428 is probably one of my favorite covers EVER, and I really don't even like Mignola's art. He hit a home run with this one, though...

Yeah, everything about it is so great from my perspective of what makes the character so great. I even like the follow up, "A Lonely Place for Dying", which is included in the same trade. While re-reading it a lot of forgotten tid bits from Tim's origin resurfaced. It is hard to believe that the "new" Robin is 20+ years old now too, lol! Plus, I'm a huge Jim Aparo mark.

I think maybe DC would have either had Jason continue to spiral out of control and eventually still have had him become a criminal killing anti hero especially after his mother's murder at the Joker's hands... or, they would have taken his survival as a message that fans wanted a Robin and would have had Jason revert to a more traditional Robin like character not unlike Dick's Robin before him.

I've been on an almost-two-year comic hiatus, but I'm getting back into it recently. Since then, I've been reading Green Lantern, Transformers: Robots In Disguise, Carnage: USA (Mini), and the soon-to-be-over Moon Knight.
So, this Saturday...
I finally broke down and picked up the new Uncanny X-Men #1-3. When I stopped buying comics a while back I was reading Uncanny regularly - and it sucked! - plus, I'm still kinda sore that that restarted the numbering. But, I couldn't help it!
I picked up X-Factor #233 also, partially because I want to see what's going on, and partially because Havok is on the cover!
Finally, in an attempt to read something outside of my norm, I picked up the new Animal Man #1-3. The dude at my comic shop has been raving about it.

I bought a big load of comics this weekend and pretty much dove back into the hobby :)
Picked up the 1602 trade, Avenging Spider-Man 2-6, recent issues of Iron Man, FF pretty much 6-16 (missing 8 & 15), and Avengers vs X-Men #1.

Yep, in my comic purge of about 6 years ago that was one of 6 or 7 DC book runs I kept post-1980. The JL/JLE/JLI books, New teen Titans, Starman, Johns' Flash, Suicide squad, Captain carrot, and Byrne Superman.

I'm reading more right now than I have in quite a while--mainly because this is comics' last chance for me. If they don't hold my interest--I'll only ever pick up books strictly for art or only digital/TPBs from now on. I think it is a last ditch effort to validate my lifelong addiction to comics.
I'm currently picking up:

Batman (Capullo/Snyder)--great book
Aquaman--great book

Avengers Assemble is horrible.

Justice League is a major letdown. It's not a good book.
Batman (Capullo/Snyder)--great book
I'm really enjoying this book. I'm tempted to gab Snyder's vampire book based on his Batman work. I love the fact it's a hefty read. Comic writers have a tendancy to let the panels do teh talking so reading a comic takes 5 minutes. Snyder's Batman is very text heavy, which is refreshing.

It's not as dark and gritty as the first couple issues that started the whole franchise, but it is definitely nowhere near the lightness of the cartoon. It's pretty serious. To give an example, Raphael beats the shit out of Casey Jones's dad.

Batman INC #1 today!
Posted this in the haul thread by mistake, but here it is:
Akira is very badly translated. The translators seem to have made a lot of mistakes when they flipped it backwards - Japanese books read right to left, but Akira has been flipped to read like a western book, left to right. Some talk bubbles don't make sense when read from left to right, and the overall pacing of the story is extremely bumpy. The cuts between panels are awkward too. Let's say Kaneda runs out a door saying "I need to ask him...", and in the next panel he's halfway across town on his motorcycle saying "...if he knows anything." There are a lot of awkward dialog and panel cuts like that. The story makes sense, but these strange errors make it really unenjoyable.

Batman
Detective Comics
Batman and Robin
Dark Knight
Red Hood
(Nightwing and Batwing have been added for the Owls tie-in...might stay)
Justice League
Suicide Squad
Uncanny X-Men
Wolverine and The X-Men (recently jumped back on)
AvX
Uncanny X-Force (also just came back on)
Recent drops were Green Lantern, Fantastic Four and the 3 IDW Joe titles (still buying ARAH, for now). I was reading Avenging Spider Man, but that got forgotten about. I'd like to add some Marvel titles like Iron Man, but not sure where to jump on.

I don't read as much as did. Until about a year ago, I read most everything DC and Marvel put out. I would pick and choose on some titles. For example, I might not read every issue of every Bat title, but I would read about 10-16 Bat issues a year - if that makes sense.
My favorite character is Spider Man and while some people love what Slott is doing for some reason I just can't get into it. I don't hate it, but I just don't love it.
So to get on topic - I am getting my Spider fix from Venom and Scarlett Spider - IMO two of the best revamps of characters at the Big 2 in the past several years.

The reactions weren't real, they came across like the two Spiders already knew the other.
SPOILERS:
For Peter, seeing Miles in the costume wouldn't be a "no way" moment, it would be "who does this clown think he is, being Spider-Man is my gig". For Miles it wouldn't be a "no way" moment because he doesn't know it's Peter in the mask, as far as Miles would be concerned, it would be an imposter soiling the memory of Peter Parker.
