So I am trying to save up for a PS3,and I found one on Gamestop.com and can someone tell me if I should or shouldn't get his one?

Gamestop.com - Buy PS3 System with 40GB HD (GameStop Refurbished) - Playstation 3 (http://www.gamestop.com/Catalog/ProductDetails.aspx?product_id=68183)

Personally the only PS3 I would consider owning is the 60 GB model. After that they gimpped and then removed the backwards compatibility all together.

Don't get a refurbished. What if it breaks down?

My 40 gig system just broke down and I had to send it away in a cardboard coffin to sony. I suggest you get an older 60 gig off ebay they seem to have less problems and their backwards compatible. The 40 Gig isn't.

Nope sony's getting cheap. They are taking it in the ass with the profit margin with Blu-Ray they lose money. I guess you cut corners were you can.

Backwards compatibility doesn't really matter much to me,the fact that the 80 and 40 gig don't have it just gives me a reason to trade in my PS2 and PS2 games in order to contribute to the cost.

Thats the one I have. Had it since Dec. No problems ever with moderate use. However a friend went thru 3 of them in a year. Check gamestops return policy carefully.
But whos to tell you to get one? Check out the game library if you havnt already and see if there are any games you want to play.

I gave my ps2 away the day I got the ps3 and never looked back.

Correction.

I believe the 80 GB has limited backwards compatibilty, meaning some old games will play but not all.

But the 40 GB is not BC at all.

Are you apposed to a 360 they also have GTA IV and exclusive DLC on Xbox Live. I have both and I play my 360 alot more than my PS3. No I'm not anyone's fanboy it's just my opinion. I love my PS3 but for the Blu-ray mostly.

Listen I bought mine when Metal Gear Solid came out and let me tell you...there is not a day I regret purchasing it.

Blu-ray is a plus but REALLY you have to use it to it's fullest by downloading content from their network...also their online capabilities are FREE (Will probably stay that way)

Just think of the newer games and you will know what to do...

Ghostbuster, MGS4, Little Big Planet, Bioniccommando....and the rest..

ShakeZula77

Yes. Just another exclusive lost by playstation. Honestly all games should come out for all systems. I bought my PS3 for MGS IV and it is bad ass. But Xbox live blows PS network out of the water. Yes PSN is free but you get what you pay for. I'm just saying "yes xbox live is 69 a year" but it's also worth every penny. It doesn't matter what we say go with what you love.

Side note: I'm on my 1st Xbox and my PS3 is in a box on it's way to TX(repair). I really thought the Xbox would go 1st with all the stories I've heard......

Alright, I bought An Xbox 360 and within a month I got the red ring od death, got it fixed and no more problems (keep in mind that it was bought when it first came out). Now The PS3 well my good friend David has one, and it's a crapshoot, (not the system) The long and short of it is, it depends on what you enjoy playing, I like My 360, but to be fair, I like MGS so the Ps3 is a good system!

i havnt really played ps3 enough to critisize it, my brother says 360 blows it out the water though. he is a big time video gamer and thats his hobby just like are's is joes so i take his word for it, ive played both systems and i think 360 is better, just because they have a bigger selection of games, plus they buy out most of ps3's games so thats what i would go with. im not huge into video games, i just play them from time to time.

They have managed to shrink the Cell processor to 65nm and the graphics processor as well plus the diode of the blueray laser itself. All this means production costs less and the machine runs cooler, well you get the idea. 120gb hard drive is gonna be a package deal too. The down side is no backwards compatability. The 80 emulated like the 360 does, the 60 had the PS2 emotion engine built in (and extra memory slots! The best model for your buck if you wanna play PS2), the 40 doesn't have any backwards compatability at all. All in all, I would wait for the newer model. It will be cheaper than they are now. The newer one also comes with the Dual Shock 3 controller (save you $50 bucks is a vibrator is your thing. btw, it's the same tech as the Dual Shock 2 so you can always use old PS2 controllers for back up parts for the vib motors.) As far as that 360/PS3 argument. I don't see it. I've got 3 360's (one since day one and no red ring of death) that I use for Forza 2 (three screens... sweeeeeeet as hell fun.) I enjoy the set up of Xbox Live better than the PS3 and I'm not going to enjoy that Sony "Home" crap either. But to each his own. Decide which system has the games you want and go for it. Just buy wisely, remember the "silly season" is drawing near and price drops are always around the corner.

So... how come I seem to have no trouble playing my PS2 games on my 80 gig PS3 if it isn't backwards compatible? In fact, my Marvel vs Capcom 2, which may or may not be legit, plays even better.

From what I've heard is that the new version that came out this month(80 gig for $399) is not backwards compatible. For some reason Sony decided to do away with this option. I know that the last one that came out with the Metal Gear Solid 4 game was still backwards compatible and then they just discontinued it so that they could offer the 80 gig at the same price as the 40 gig without the bells and whistle thinking that it will attract people to it since it is 80 gigs. I'm not knocking Sony, but to give us something then to take it away is kinda like lame. I got lucky, I got my PS3 from my Lil Bro and it's a 60 gig and I couldn't be happier! I also have the 360 and I love the fact that it has a huge selection of titles. I just hope that I never get the "red ring of death!" Lol. Well anyway, it's up to you to decide which one you like. This is just a suggestion, but why not go to GameStop and play both of them there and decide which one is the one for you. Just a suggestion and you can also get some feedback from the "Tank" and the employees there, I mean they don't work on comission so no worries there that they are trying to swindle you out of your hard earned greenbacks! Lol. :D

For the price a refurb is not worth it in my opinion. Now if it said $249 then I would be all over it. But for around $50 more you can get a new unit.

You can easily replace a 40 Gig hard disk in a PS3. I did and now have a nice 160 gig drive in mine. Just google changing PS3 hard disk. I have had mine for almost a year and never had a problem one with it.

Also don't forget to load up Yellow Dog Linux for PS3 and run some emulation action. Nothing like seeing Atari running on a Sony Machine.

I got the Motorstorm 80 set and my friend got the MGS 80 gig set. BOTH of them play EVERY PS2 games we have.

He has a PS2 collection of about 75 games and it plays every one of them. No problems, no lock ups, nothing. Plays smooth and makes them look better.

So that whole thing is probably an XBOX fanboy rumor.

I too want to know what is so special with XBOX live versus PS network.

From what I've heard so far, those who PAY for a "silver" member ship has to wait well after the other members to get theirs.

Well, PS Network people don't have to pay nothing and we get everything at the same time.

One other question for the XBOX fans, how well do those HD DVDs look? :::snicker:::

I am in the exact same boat. I just wish I would have bought mine earlier. I'm not quite sure what the big deal about backwards compatibility is either. I still have a PS2 and not to mention, if you really want to play PS2 games, sooner or later a brand new PS2 is going to be less than $99 any way. By the way, there are lots of great games for the PS3 with many very unique exclusive games coming. Don't listen to anyone who says the PS3 has no games. Sony has an excellent track record of producing awesome first party games and they are right on track with the PS3.

Well I have a Sony PS3 ( 40gig) , xbox 360 Elite and a nintendo wii and I cant say one is better than the other...

PS3, my only complaint is that I have the 40gig and its not backwards compatible with my PS2 libary.. I wish I would have thought about that before I bought this because I would have gotten a BC one..

360 Elite... nothing bad to say about this system either.. I usually just play FPS on this system.. this one is probably used the least of all 3

Nintendo Wii... this is used when ever we have people over.. everybody loves playing this..

If you can still find the 80gb PS3 that comes with MGS4 then your set you get one of the greatest games ever (IMO) a dual shock controller and it is backwards compatible to play your PS2 games, but I don't know why anyone would want to once they play PS3 games :) I sold all my games and my PS2 to Gamestop for around 200.00 bucks and have never looked back.

Yeah, but that's the thing, you can ONLY get old movies. No new movies coming out, no one is really carrying them anymore.

So that makes the XBOX HD DVD player useless. That's an expensive DVD player if you ask me.

So, I didnt really see anyone say why the 360 was better for online play.
I have the MGS4 80 gb version and it plays PS2 games.
I just read something in Gameinformer that might shed some light on things.
Sony has sold 1.8 million units during a certain time period. I think they sold either 1.5 or 1.6 million PS2 units during the same time period. And they were claiming at E3 that they would be releasing 150 new titles for PS2 this coming year. So Sony is no where near done with PS2 and when someone gets a PS3 and sells their PS2 on ebay it hurts sales of new PS2's so if they get rid of backward compatibility than people will keep their PS2's and thus they will be able to sell more through stores. Its smart and stupid at the same time.

Why Xbox Live is better than PSN IMO..........

* All XBL Arcade games have a try-before-you-buy option. Only a select few PSN games do, and they're more awkward - separation of "starter pack" from "levels", rather than XBL Arcade's simple unlock.
* Demos and arcade games playable immediately after download, no pointless "install" step afterward. Why would I *not* want to install?
* Purchased items can be re-downloaded as many times as you like, on PSN it's a limited # of times
* Vastly more content of course including categories like music videos and game hints not found in PSN.
* List-based navigation of XBL Marketplace quicker and easier than navigation of PSN Store.

Again it really doesn't matter what I say it's only my opinion. If you love the PS3 that's great it comes across in your posts. I like my PS3 to I just prefer my Xbox and it's online service better. When a game is released multiplatform I get it on 360. I do enjoy the PS3 exclusives that's why I bought it. Otherwise I would have never got to play MGS 4 and (soon) Little Big Planet. Just because some people enjoy Xbox live more than PSN doesn't mean we're hating just expressing our opinion.

Besides the original poster said he was mainly buying a PS3 for GTA 4. I just pointed out it's available on 360 and has exclusive DLC. All the "my system has more exclusives" is about to go out the window. Now company's realize that to maximize profit a Multiplatform release will take in more money. Now they will just fight over exclusive DLC. As of right now Xbox is winning on that front. Also another new trick is an exclusive release window. I can't remember which one Rock Band 2 or Guitar hero World Tour is exclusive on 360 for a few months. Like PS3 did with Unreal Tournament.

I'll quote that very same issue of GameInformer......

In a recent poll in the latest issue of GameInformer, 74.7% of PLAYSTATION 3 owners surveyed considered Xbox LIVE to be the best online service in comparison with the PLAYSTATION Network and WiiConnect24. Along with that, 71.4% of the people that own an Xbox 360 feel that Xbox LIVE is worth the subscription fee.

Also, 63% of people who owned all three consoles still found Xbox LIVE to be worth the price.

Thank you for responding. Your stated reasons dont really affect me so I guess I didnt know about them. I havent owned a 360 but have played one online at a friends house a few times. Didnt really see all the workings of it, just played halo 3 online.
I guess if you dont know any better, like me, than the PS3 is awesome. I came from PS2 so it makes me plenty happy.

I wasnt saying you were a hater. It just seemed like several people jumped in and said live was better without any reasons so...

It's all good. I have both I like both just one a little more (and hell in a year that could change).

xbox360 has already reached its graphical limitations , they are pushing the limits on GoW 2 they wont go much further than that.. ps3 graphics havent been fully taken advantage of ..aside from MGS4

as for the xbox live - monthly fee or one flat rate
ps3 - free online

i have both , so im not a fan boy of either i think they are both great systems.. it all depends on what you want it for

xbox - gaming console
ps3 - computer

I have one reason why Ps3 is better than Xbox360
ps3 has MGS4

My 2 cents:

PS3 has WAY better exclusives, and I adore bluray movies.

Problem is, finding one that can play PS2 games (if that's your thing). You have to find a 60 gig, or the Metal Gear bundle (totally worth every last penny).

I sold my Xbox once everything became multi-platform (except the odd MS exclusive, but none of them appealed to me.

Although, cash permitting, I may go back and get an elite some day because I miss Dead Rising and C&C3.

ive had both the 360 and ps3 i like both, but i like the ps3 better, and when comes to online gaming any true gamer will tell you this, there the same, one is not better then the other, but ps3 preferred because its free,360 your paying Microsoft royalties and thats it, no better or worse service i like both but i prefer ps3 because its free, but like i said they are both good, you really cant lose with either system, unless your a retarded fanboy who swears your nuts to either sony or microsoft, and in the real world of true gaming you will end up with both, as now you can get any of them cheaper now,at a pawn shop or from crack head heck, i dont know but dont let no one tell you one is better then the other it comes down to what you like, and even then you most likely find on both, coming from some one who has or had both systems, and has beta tested over 30 games for both companies for online and off line games. so pick 2-5 games form either one and if one appeals more than the other choose that one, based of those games you choose.

I'm gonna say no! I hate to say this but both systems are absolute garbage! Every xbox is has or will break even new ones give it time, it's a flawed design and it's junk! My ps3 were do I begin, I've been through 2 in 6 months thanks to Psn firmware it crashes systems alll over the world! Thank God I have the factory warranty on that POS cause when I downloaded 2.41 boom ps3 fried itself nowhere near the extent of the 360 because it still worked just not properly, I say screw them both man, I just got number 3 a month ago and I haven't touched it, I want fallout 3 then I'm gonna sell it w games and warranty and factory reciept!

My PS3 wasn't in a location where it will overheat, and if it was something I caused Sony wouldn't replace it.I don't trash anything and everything I own is very well taken care of but future Ps3 owners check the internet and get your facts straight first because firmware will destroy systems it won't happen to all but the possiblity is still out there. You have to download new firmware updates to play online and 1 hour after I downloaded 2.42 my system crashed couln't find hd, would freeze games and would be on the xmb screen for hours w no xmb, it happened to me twice and it will happen to someone else soon, just buyer beware and get an extended warranty cause the guys who have the old ones it's gonna cost you 150 dollars to get fixed!

I love the Ps3 its an amazing system and mine (both) worked fine until software downloads. If you intend to buy it for offline then you're gonna be fine the failure rate on the Ps3 is very low if I'm not mistaken 3% are expected to fail from shoddy workmanship as opposed to the 360, which is alot higher, but why buy it if you can't be online? It defeats the purpose but look it up sony firmware 2.40-2.42 it's a killer!!

I know a lot of people who have had their sensor break on the PS3.

Not sure if this is true, but GAMESTOP once told me there was an add on you can purchase seperate to make your PS3s @##backwards..... I mean Backwards compatible.

I don't know. A PS3 is a lot of money and the only reason I see worth getting one is for metal gear solid 4, and then after you beat convert it into a George Forman Grill. Home Entertainment: Playstation 3 Converted Into George Foreman Grill (http://gizmodo.com/gadgets/home-entertainment/playstation-3-converted-into-george-foreman-grill-216695.php)

Majority of the games really worth getting either aren't out yet or are for the 360 also. Personally I think the 360 is a superior system.

^ how did they break? I've never heard of one just breaking that doesn't happen often or was it from updates because that happens regularly, I've lost 2 systems myself but due to uploads when I uninstalled the firmware it went back to normal but it never just broke. I'm just curious let me know.

So when does this new PS3 model come out?

I want a PS3 as well, but I would prefer a more affordable version of the system and I would also like something that runs smoother.

^ I read that before too, it supposed to make a drop around Christmas but when the newest incarnation comes out theyre scrapping the 80 and the 40 and will replace them with 120 and 60 but gb dont matter on Ps3 anyway as long as its a 2.5 sata hd it is ps3 compatible I belive a member here has a 500 gb ps3

yea it's a great game but not for everyone...it felt like watching a movie more than a video game. the past MGS series had long cut scene's but not as long as MGS4. I beat it, sold it.

mgs4 is an awesome game..ps3 is a better system hardware wise compared to the xbox .. believe me im not a fanboy i own both systems and play them both equally and the both have their ups and downs. im on my 3rd xbox.. the online for xbox is wayyyyy better BUT i think thats about to change ive been lucky enough to be in the HOME beta and i think alot of people are going to love it.. but back to the point , as it stands now the xbox has already reached its graphical limitations and gears of war 2 push's the system pretty hard so i wouldnt be surprised we see more xbox's failing. the ps3 , devs havent even began to scratch the surface of its potential.. people should get mgs4 if they have 1080p just to see how amazing the ps3 games will look.

aslo , if a firmware bricks your system sony will replace it for free ... happend to my brother with that one firmware 2.something (it bricked alot of systems , sony took the update down then re-released it fixed) all my brother had to do was call sony they sent a box he had a new system 2 weeks later.. sony even admitted it was the firmware... they replaced it for free
