View Full Version : SDCC Business Suit Cobra Commander Review

San Diego Comic Con Cobra Commander is a nice homage to an early Cobra Commander just starting to build up his army. Hasbro has said that the body is a repaint of the upcoming Donovan figure from the Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade toy line but their presentation pictures show that the body is definatly being used for Toht from the Raiders movie. Regardless, the head is an all new, hooded version. This was needed to fit the bigger neck ball joint that Indy figures have. Since the body is from the Indy toy line, there are a few differences in articulation. For one, the hips are what we call a T-Crotch. Meaning that the legs can only move back and forth and not out to the side. The skirt that makes up the lower part of the jacket restricts leg movement enough that you won't notice the lack of articulation in the hips anyway. The waist can rotate around but there is no forward or backward movement of the chest like other modern age figures. The wrists appear to not be moveable at first, but they do rotate around like what we're used to.
The suit is all black with black pants, gold buttons and a lapel pin along with a white undershirt and red & blue striped tie. The skirt that makes up the lower half of the sport coat is too long in my opinion. It makes the sport coat look like a bath robe. This is more noticeable on the rarer Blue version since the pants are tan on that one and the sport coat has a cobra emblem that looks like what you'd find on an expensive bath robe.
SDCC CC comes with a Podium that has a thin plastic sheet with Cobra sigil on it and a removable Microphone. The podium and microphone are both based firmly in real world sculpts that will work well in a number of dioramas.
This figure is what an exclusive should be, a toy that will appeal to a small group of collectors for various reasons. If this figure was mass released, I feel we'd see a lot of them either peg warming or being sold without the podium. The design and deco of the figure makes it only useable in a few dioramas.
Figure Rating: 5 out of 10

Nice review.
Not a big fan of the Blue version, the tan pants just don't do it for me. Cool figure, though. All we need now is the Twins in their EE suits.

Good review. Looks better in the package than out. Will end up selling my blue and blacks.

While there are design flaws that come from being an Indy repaint, it’s what makes this line strong having such an obscure homage.
This was very creative for an exclusive, and in my opinion one of the most memorable pieces from this line. To me, this felt like lots of thought was put into it. Besides, there’s not all too many poses I would put this guy in, so articulation wasn’t too essential.
My score; 9/10

I'm glad everyone has one to sell. Makes me feel good that I can get one at some point. I seemed to miss every HTS release. Anyone selling one for cheaper than I can get on ebay, PM me.
As for the figure, I'm not sure why HASBRO puts out a new line like IJ and makes the interchangeability so hard. Why not make the neck ball the same size? I wanted to custom some Joe figs w/Indy heads and it makes is difficult. You think this would be better for them with all their mold rehashing.
If I never say it enough times... just another shining example of why I HATE HASBRO.

Correction it's from the Toht figure not Donovan
Nope, the Hasbro team said in their Q and A session that it's from Donovan
Scratch that, I just saw the presentation pictures from SDCC.....Looks like they are using that for Toht. I wonder why they said it was gonna be Donovan, maybe another repaint?
My appologies and the change has been made in the review :)

Perhaps they use the same mold then because here's Toht. That and everywhere else I have read said it was Toht they used.

I just hate it when the card shows an emblem on the hood and the head of the figure looks like a pacman ghost

I hope that when they release toht he comes with that chain hanger for his coat. That was cool.

Since Hasbro didn't have enough supply to meet demand (and HTS has an ordering loophole that enabled people to order more than the limit), I'm taking the cheap way out to have this SDCC exclusive... buying an extra Toht and making him into a hooded CC. That is, if the Toht figure will even make it to the pegs, with all those KOTCS figures clogging them up.
Anyways this was a great con elusive. No that's not a misspelling ;) Being a big fan of the older Marvel Joe comics, this version of CC was a great idea!

I like it! I have like 300 different versions of Cobra Commander. This would be easy enough to paint the suit black or blue (forget the khaki pants) and pop a CC head on it. I have some microphones from WWE figures and can easily make a prop podium.
Great idea.

Brilliant, Utterly Brilliant...*lol*
Yea, if he had that emblem, if hasbro had bothered to add that one little bit of extra detail that wouldn't be nearly as funny.

9/10 for me. The card is more than half of what makes it so cool. It's an awesome figure if you don't bust it open, and a must-have for hard core fans of the early Marvel comics.

Thats why I made my own using luke Skywalker arms, and a Bruce Wayne body with custom arm sockets. oh yeah the left hand is Luke's and the right is a hand from a random SW fig forgot who. the mic is Luke's saber cut an upside down.

I like the black version much better. I actually traded my Blue suit to a friend for his black suited version.
He's more of a variant chaser than me and i only paid 10 bucks for the blue anyways.

I swiped one off of HTS.com and I am happy that I have it but I honest to god just don't want to open it because it's such a crappy figure...
I think I might buy the Indy figure and make another Cobra commander or a Tomax and Zamot. You know?

Nifty! Who needs to spend ridiculous amounts of money on ebay to get something as relatively simple to make as this CC.

Hell, I like this suit much more then the plain black one. You guys know when or if Toht has been released? Cause as cool as this suit looks with the nifty pin stripes and all, Hasbros done all the work for me cause all i gotta do is shave the ball joint a lil and use the wave five head i got on my Commander now.

I actually really like it, I've got one right now carded. I'm looking to get at least two more.... on to use as the commander... and one to modify into Hector Rameriz, TV Newsanchor and host of 20 Questions!

This figure is a great collector piece & I am so very glad I was able to get both versions at HTS.
He was more posable then I expected, stands out in the lineup, & with all the poses you can put him in with the mic & podium, he becomes a real "ham" in the bunch of steadfast soldiers.
Perfect exclusive!!

I like the whole origins vibe this fig brings to the line, and how the fig kinda always feels like he's bout ta give an oration to His Troops. And as hard as it was and for others to get gives this fig another kinda mystique....I like it. 7/10

I have both black and blue vers. ... overall i like black suit way better, not saying much because I give the figure like a 6 or so rating. The gold is in the art work on the card! CC art is insane!..story board is awesome.. filecard hands down my favorite. I rate the card A 10 !! I know everyone want's the more rare blue, but the demand will be with the black! watch!!...overall i'll give an 8.....
