I don't know if any of you guys have heard this news but 20th Century Fix has obtained the rights to do a live action adaption of Dragon Ball, not Dragon Ball Z. I just wonder if they can rly do this series good in live action.

If I be not mistaken, Piccolo is played by James Marsters and Goku is "that guy" from a bunch of teen movies.
This has "Direct To DVD" written all over it, but it COULD be camp genius the likes of which has not been seen since 1980's "Flash Gordon."
The cast list from imdb.com:
Justin Chatwin ... Goku
other cast:
James Marsters ... Lord Piccolo
Emmy Rossum ... Bulma
Jamie Chung ... Chi Chi
Yun-Fat Chow ... Master Roshi
Randall Duk Kim ... Grandpa Gohan
Joon Park ... Yamcha
Ernie Hudson ... Master Mutaito
Eriko Tamura ... Mai
Texas Battle ... Carey Fuller
Shavon Kirksey ... Emi
Luis Arrieta ... Weaver
Richard Blake ... Agundas
Julian Sedgwick ... Mr. Kingery

The hair can't be repilicated lol... Too effin hard. But I do like what they did with his uniform. Its a nice modern update to what we rmbr so dearly.
I'm going to have to say this film will be flop-tastic. Not many people will even be interested in it unless they are a fan. I've asked a few of my friends that have never heard of the show and said from what they've seen from the movie pics it looks like crap. I personally don't think it will be that bad. I have a certain level of understanding when it comes to making a cartoon show into a movie. It's difficult cause things in a live action look. When they do transfer these type cartoons into movies or live people it tends to look ridiculous. So I have to give the film makers some credit for having the balls to make a film such as this. I think the Cowboy Bebop movie that's going to be made will look a lot better due to the more realistic feel of the show, even if it is future based it still has a strong realistic sci-fi feel. You can see more pictures of dragon ball and a few other movies. Live Action Anime (http://liveactionanime.org/) I'm looking forward to seeing the death note movie, even if I'm not the biggest fan of the show. I can't wait for the metal gear movie to be released, even if it's not anime or dragon ball related, It's one of the greatest story lines ever(my opinion). As far as the Dragon Ball movie goes, I'll give it a chance but I don't have too hi hopes for this movie.

i'd rather watch Deathnote live-movie. :D
or azumi or battle royale or whatever....
edit: so Dragonball will not have the "fan-service" theme?

As it turns out, the film was supposed to be released this Spring, but Fox decided to take their time. Good.
Anyway, they do have an idoru in it (Emiko from "Heroes" as Mai) and Justin and James lobbied for their costumes to look more like what's in the anime/manga.
My gripe is, why didn't they have Bulma as a full-on bluenette? Not happy about that.
Unlike "Voltron", I'm supporting it. They're at least keeping the basic premise of the story (Saiyan boy needs to save the world from evil overlord) and who the hell doesn't like James Marsters?!
BTW, WB is planning an English-language "Death Note" remake. And VIZ announced their motion picture branch, so we might be seeing a lot more. And if "Twilight" does well, we might see "Vampire Knight" as a movie...

Damn... They're really gonna make an American live action Death Note? I might see that...
As for Bulma's hair yeah it should be full on blue but this needs to be slightly "realistic". HAHAHAHAHA!!!!! Yeah right... Blue hair FTW

Very interesting. I love DB and DBZ even GT but I think the age demo you need to have a commercial success has already moved on form DB to other franchises. Will there be a relaunch of the cartoon to go with the movie, or maybe 4 inch figs based on the new joes design.

wait...someone's real name is Texas Battle? At least that's following the format the others were listed in...if so, wow.

After seeing Shaolin Soccer, I always thought there was the possibility to pull off a Dragonball movie. I'm sure I won't see this released in theatres though :)

Not really a fan of DB, so I don't really care either way. But it looks a lot like something on the sci fi channel. I hope it does well and that DB fans like it, but i will probably pass.

Well Im excited, but will wait for the DVD release.......its going to bomb.....
I'll still see this in theaters but I just don't think it will go to well in the box office, although you never know. It could be surprisingly really good. I'm watching the live-action Death Note movies right now, they're really good, but the american version will be better. I think Dragon ball would be just the opposite.

American made Death Note movies???
Err...yeah, all we need is some elitist emo kid with that notebook.

It's the effects and film stye of american films that make seem better. As I've said I'm watching the Japanese Death Note movies right now and It reminds me of a made for TV movie, but they could actually be a made for TV movies, saying I don't know too much about it. Ryuk looks pretty good though. As for dragon ball I think a Japanese movie would be more suiting. The Japanese movies do a really good job of staying true to the original content. The characters of Dragon Ball have more of a Japanese feel to me, as opposed to american, even though some of the actors are Asian. It's all a matter of opinion any way.

That would be great! Are you crazy, I would love that.
The Death anime was pretty good, well until L died, than it just went downhill. The two live action movies were awesome! But I mean Ryuk and the other special effects could have been better.
Now a live action American Death Note movie...
That could be awesome or terrible! I hope they go with a new story. I really hope this dosen't suck... Most Japanese to English franchises just flop in comparrison to their orginals.

agreed, that's why I don't have high hopes for this Dragon Ball movie. But who knows it could surprise me. When I first saw the Death note movies I thought Ryuk was really creepy to see with live action people, although I agree with you the effects could be better. The movies were still really cool. If they could change the plot line with the american one just a little it would definitely be better. Plus Reading subtitles and hearing dubbing in a movie just takes away from the film a little. I would love to see the american one when it comes out.

There is a japanese live action Dragonball movie.
While you watch it (most likely with a WTF look on your face even Keanu would envy) I'll be making the sandwich with your words inscribed upon them for you to dine on. :)
Did people not like the death note movies?? Someone said that they looked like they were made for t.v., I was under the impression that they were indeed made as a made for t.v. movie....?!?

Yeah I didn't really research it so I didn't really know if they were made for TV or not. I loved the death note movies ^_^ I watched them like five times each now. I was just trying to compare effects. The movies were F'n awesome.

I've already seen pics of Goku, Piccolo, and Master Roshi and I'm not impressed.
Seems like it was WELL over due and they missed the jump on making this movie a sucsess. They waited way too long and the fans are dissapointed.

I do think the DBZ season-by-season DVD sets have sparked some new interest in the line, though.
I never got DBZ on DVD because, well, I thought they were too expensive for what they were and I'm one of those anime-should-be-uncut-and-subtitled elitists. But I've loved those season sets.
I think this movie will be campy but possibly entertaining. As absurd as it looks, I think it will end up a more satisfying film than the Joe film. DBZ never took itself very seriously. I'm expecting bad-to-ham acting (bad from Justin Chatwin, ham from James Marsters), 1980's special effects and kung fu fighting, and a wacky script.
Basically something akin to "The Heroic Trio."

ouch...that's piccolo!? Looks like something strait out of star trek. Hopefully when i see it on screen it won't be as painful to look at a the pictures are. I think it might make me cringe just as much as ziro the hutt in clone wars(still really liked clone wars). If piccolo had his original costume on I might be able to bare it but really ouch. It's makin' me like the way Goku's look.
