I'm part of a group sponsoring a family for Christmas. My item category is any kind of toy gift for a 12 year old boy. Other people were given clothing items and reading items as their category, so he's covered there. My dollar range I was given was $20, but I can go more. It's just a guideline.

Now, I know what I liked as a 12 year old, but I was and still am a big nerd into Transformers, GI Joe, Star Wars, and anime. What would be a good toy/game item that most average 12 year old boys would enjoy?

I think video games are out since I know nothing of their family situation. I will assume the worst and say they don't have any game systems etc. I was thinking something like a cool Nerf gun, but I was thinking maybe 12 year olds would be getting out of the Nerf thing. I know I would like it, but I'm trying to put myself in his shoes and want to get something he might like.

My cop out would be to get a gift card, but that's no fun.

Edit: Here are the pics of each item in question. Remember he's got clothing covered (even socks and underwear) by other people in my group. This is purely a fun, nice to have, item.

Preteen is a tough age. For most of us, that's the point we decided to embrace the nerd/geek title. With no real knowledge of what the kid's into, choosing a toy that suits him can be difficult. I started building hi end model kits at that age, personally.

i wouldn't get a toy, boys stop liking toys at that age, and then start back up in their late 20's

Maybe I can go the collectible route and get him something he might want to keep MOC/MIB. Then again, do I really want to start him down a path of collecting. :D

Since he's got clothes covered by other people, I suppose I can try to get him something fun, but not a toy per se.

I totally hear ya here. At 12 I was starting to want clothes and sneakers...but I played NES like a mofo and came home to my Joes and Marvel figues....hell I was playing with those ToyBiz marvel figures at my high school graduation lol.

Having said all that, if he's into sports you can't go wrong with a Jr. size football, or something from Nerf.

I think if you get him a Transformer he's probably gonna think you suck...just what I get from the 12 yr olds in my family these days.

Is he a smart kid?? How bout a chess set?

yeah, i really don't know sharky, that's tough, do you know this kid personallly?

i did this few years ago at my local police station, my ma works there, and i sent in a few moc joes, they were to be given to a 12 year old after i handed em in, when my ma told me, i was like um, nah, you can't give a 12 year old joes, and for some reason the ma came in the police staion crying that the younger brother didn't get nothing or something, so i was like give the younger kid the joes and hopefully it will spark the interest gi joe, and someone else can help out the older boy with something more maturer. i didn't wanna see no kid left out, and my toys not go to good use.

i have no ideas for you, i keep thinking cologne, but then again, he might not be into smelling good yet. you have to keep it primarily cheap, so a bike and that kind'a shit's out the question.

The hard part is I know nothing other than he's 12. Is it possible to get a decent watch like a Timex for $20-$30.

I am still leaning toward the Nerf thing. Even if it's not his cup of tea, who doesn't enjoy shooting stuff around the house from time to time.

BTW, I do appreciate the effort and ideas. It is a tough thing since he's in that awkward age of a pre-teen. Not quite a kid and not quite a teenager yet. That's why I decided to post and ask for ideas.

sucks even more, you don't know what kind'a kid he is or what he's into. no clue if he has a game system, being that he's sponsored, most likely means his family don't have much and may not even have a game system. gift card might be the best bet, dude.

I think I've narrowed it down to a nice but inexpensive watch or a cool Nerf gun.

In this corner you have a Timex T2E581 Men's Brown Dress Watch; $28

And in this corner, I present the Nerf Vortex Praxis; $25

I'm taking a shot in the dark here. LOL! I figured on the one hand he could be getting out of toys and a watch might be something he would like to wear to look nice. On the other hand, what boy of any age doesn't like to shoot stuff.

Nerf. My boy is 12 in a few months, he hasnt liked action figures for a long time now. But I bought him the nerf set when they came out a few months ago and he really has fun with them. The nerf swords and weapons are fun too. All birthday parties this year for his friends have been gift cards none of them are into action figures anymore.

If you created the thread, you go to "Thread Tools" on the upper right corner of the first page of a thread. It would be just above the area that has "page 1 of _".

Is it a church group? Hell, even if it is, give him porn. All 12 year boys love porn.

I second Alcined4 on that notion. That or hook him up with easy 18 year old .....just sayin that would have been awesome at 12!

Just a little update. After talking about it with some co-workers I decided to go 50/50 with someone and get a Technic Lego set. This way I can give something that would normally be out of the price range I was trying to stick to. I think it is age appropriate, somewhat educational, and should give some enjoyment out of putting it together.

Either one of these, depending on what I find at the store.

Those are acceptable choices Sharky, but I still would've gone with porn. It's the gift that keeps on giving.
