I'm guessing my monitor is starting to crap out, but I thought I'd ask to see what others thought. It's working fine now, but I've had problems the last couple days when I first turn the computer on and sometimes after the screen saver has been on for a while. Basically, the screen is all perfectly lit up and then it goes dark. But it's not completely dark because you can still see what's on the screen. It's like the back-light is going out.

If I turn the monitor on and off, it eventually stays on fine. I'm pretty sure that the monitor is less than 4 years old, but I can't find my original paperwork to verify. It's definitely less than 5 years old though. Should this be happening? I didn't think this would be happening when it's not that old. And yes, everything is plugged in correctly.

If I need to replace it, where is a good place to get a decent monitor cheap? I looked at Walmart.com and the cheapest I saw was $130. Circuit City had one for less than $80.

How big of an LCD are you looking for?

It's a 15" flat screen Dell and I'd probably want something similar:

Try dissconecting the monitor from the PC when it goes dark. You should get like a red/blue/white box floating around the screen. If the box looks bright and normal it could be your video card. If the box still looks dark then its most certainly your LCD screen.

is that only going to work when it goes dark? The monitor is working fine right now. I disconnected it and it was bright like the screen is now.

if it were the video card, would anything else be happening? nothing else is happening with my computer besides the issue I mentioned.

make sure it's your monitor and NOT your video card. :(

I got bit by that one, AFTER I had bought a flat panel monitor to replace my tube for $300. :(

Try pluging your monitor into another computer or a laptop and or vicea versa if you can.
