Hi guys. Looking at getting a PS3 as opposed to a Bluray player. I've got a question though. Will the PS3 play regular DVDs as well as Bluray discs like most Blueray players will? I can't seem to find the answer to that any where. Thanks!

Not only does it play dvds but it will also "enhance" them. I love my PS3.

Get a PS3, that's the best buy you can get, you can play games, watch regular DVDs and blue ray!!!

I just bought my PS3 a few weeks ago and love it! I bought the 80GB, You can download games from the Playstation store like Mortal Kombat 2,Castlevania,Qubert etc. You can play demo's like Iron Man & Dragonball Z. I forgot to mention you can save music,go online, screen savers & pictures - This system is solid!

Which PS3 do you have? I have the 60 gig and i can play PS2 games. I belive with the newer PS3s they took out the functionality because not all PS2 games work properly.

ARE YOU SERIOUS!? My Friend was gonna buy my 40gb so that I could get the 80gb because I heard 60's(which aren't in stores anymore) and 80gb's play ps2 games, When I asked 2 associates at gamestop they told me 80's don't play ps2 games.........So, I guess they were Lying to me those bastards!

Praise for PS3 instead of bashing? How pleasant to hear it for a change.
I can't fault the system either - I've just been watching RAMBO on blu-ray and it's stunning. Looking forward to Transformers next month for the ultimate showcase though.

There are two different 80 gig systems. The older one, with motorstorm has a software emulation for ps2. The new one does not, same as the 40 gig.

The 60 gig actually has a hardware ps2 built into the ps3. I have that one and if anything ever happens to it, my ps2 library is screwed. :(

Oh yeah and it will upconvert all standard definition ps1/2 games and dvds to 1080p, assuming you have a 1080p tv to see such results.

Unless you have a British 60gb version where it was left out to cut costs!!!
(although the first software update gave us the emulator!)

I slept in a tent in front of a friggin Bestbuy for three days and four nights to get mine on the PS3 release date, so yeah i love my PS3. I talked to a sony rep cause mine reformated itself once when i turned it on and it scared the s#*t out of me. Turns out that the ps3 does that to rearange memory for better performance. and the rep said you can request your same system back ONLY if it is one of the original PS3s with the emulation chip in it. So if it ever takes a s#*t on ya you can do that, god forbid it ever did.

Since getting my PS3 (yes, go for the 80) the only thing my 360 is good for anymore is Gears of War (if it gets back from it's 2nd repair trip to microsoft in time for Gears 2)

Just make sure you get the right one. I got the 80 GB version that comes with MGS4. I had to do some research first to find out which one I wanted. And memory gets taken up quick if you download a bunch of demos.

thats because you have the 60gb (motorstorm) and the 80gb ( the metal gear one) which will play PS2 games.. 40gb PS3 will not play PS2.. I only got my 40gb because I got an excellent deal, $275 Brand new and shipped for free for the 40gb with Spidey 3 blue ray.., The 60gb was still $500 and the 80gb wasnt even out yet when I got mine.

i bought it to play GTA4 (GTA6 really, if you count the first two top view versions)...then i got two other great benefits, a bluray player and the ability to use the internet on my TV, all for $400...awesome!

My only complaint about the PS3 is the lack of regular analog out jacks. I hate the multiAV plug and the fact that I can't use a nice set of audio cables.

How did you get the internet to display full screen? Is it in the settings somewhere? Mine displays in the middle of the screen and I still see the background behind it.

when yo push the triangle when your online you have to mess with the settings in "view" and under "tools", "display area" and "resolution"...i did it a long time ago and don't remember how i did it...also pushing R3 will pull the screen closer, and R2 (zoom in) and L2 (zoom out)

I bought my PS3 for the sole purpose of GTA4. I thought the game was boring and repetitive. I sold the game on ebay 3 days after I purchased it.

San Andreas was far more better, IMO.

The running is idiotic, the gun controls were lame and the driving were so erratic it made the game unfun.

at least I still have MGS4, CoD4 and Dynasty Warriors 6 to hold me over until another game I want comes out

The only one I would ever consider is a 60 GB. Removing the Ps2 support was a BS move. Then again they did it because it was over priced and they were trying to cut costs, but if they had not shoved Bluray down the throats of everyone wanting their game system they wouldn't be over priced. They should have made the games on normal DVD discs, made a model with the Bluray drive the "Premium" model and made the normal one without it at a sane price.

you have to go to the game settings and change the display settings to brighter and so fourth...mess with it till it shows up better...and even then, sometimes the texts are still hard to see and you have to aim your camera angle all the way down i think to see them better...

I bought one the day they came out and haven't been happier. I have always been pro playstation. Bought every one on the day they came out.. so I have a nice collection.

Now as for them being backwards compatible.. the only one that isn't is the 40G. It also loses all the card slots, and 2 of the 4 usb slots in the front. Plus you have to buy all your online cables seperate and such.. even though it is wireless.

My advice to people out there is to go ahead and fork over the extra money for the 80g it is well worth the money. It plays Blu-ray, regular dvds, backwards compatible and you have all the card slots for saving games to instead of filling up your hard drive.

Plus it comes with MGS4... great game. But suggest buying COD4, if you prefer online 1st person intense action.

and for any of you other guys... look me up, here's my name:

Ice_Magick

(the ice part is due to no clans being in COD3.. so that is how you had to do it.)

Blue-Ray DVD or PS3? Well, the blue ray is more expensive and only plays blue-ray dvds. The ps3 is cheaper, plays blue-ray dvds, regular dvds, playstation 3 games, mine plays playstation 2 games, get yourself a wireless router and boom, you're online with games and the web.
PS3 just a better choice.
