Isn't this more of a packaging error than a true variant?

You are correct, but then again, anything passes as a 'variant' these days...
But it on eBay and see what fool buys it.

Sorry id have to disagree.
I think anything that is error would be a paint and anything that has been changed or fixed would be a variant. Like the black timber or zarana with and without ear rings.

Is there anyone on the Tank that collects these errors.I have a packaging error TRU Senior Officer Crimson Set,they gave me 2 of the TRU silver visor Troopers instead. Its legit,I got case fresh it has factory tape and those really diffiult to remove annoying miniature Hasbro rubberbands still intact.I'm thinking about throwing it up on the Bay but hate to describe it as a variant.

Just call it an error. They put the wrong figure in the package, thus they made an error. I don't think anyone would fault you for using that term. However, I would not use the term "variant".

I know what you mean the term "variant" is way too overused now a days

Thanks for all the input. I still disagree. A variant starts out as a error and then when error is fixed is that when it decomes a variant. And in the other post another cobra stand is out there.
Its like the first red star came out on a cobra card and then was fixed later on.
Variant. Defferent in some way from others of the same kind or form.

a variant doesn't have to start out as an error. variants are on purpose - black timber, black Destro. you're wrong and your rationalization doesn't hold up to logical scrutiny. sure, some variants begin as an error, and when changed where there are two significantly different products available, then those two products are variants of each other. when something happens as essentially an isolated incident, like a factory mistake of a paint app, which a namestand is, that is an error. that isn't the same as the designers mistakenly sending to production the Red Star card with Cobra on it, then changing it midway.
an error is not the same as a variant, and most errors don't lead to variants like your Red Star argument, which isn't the same as a mispainted figure stand, so I don't understand how you think that is a defense of your position. sure, technically it varies from the norm, but that doesn't make it the same as a variant that leads to two different versions of the same figure on the market. by that logic, every single figure ever released is a variant, from date stamps to "variant" paint mis-apps. and if everything is a variant, there is no point in defining variants because it becomes the norm.
I have two Flints, one has a little extra paint on the shirt from his belt. since it varies from the other, it must be a variant by your logic. I don't think any rational person would make that assertion.

That may be the definition of the word variant. But, to me, that's not what it means to collectors. A variant in the world of collecting is a chase piece. For example, Black Timber or the Fear Toxin/Ghoul Face Movie Masters Batman. A variant is a known production difference where an error is an unknown, unintentional difference.

A variant is planned. an example is the black headed destro, clear wraith. An error is just that an error. only important to those that find it important.

so black head destro, & black timbers were both errors? and maybe they accidentally made a clear wraith.
Im pretty sure when a company openly states they are going to make 1 normal and one chase, the chase is a "variant.
If you find a destro with 2 left legs, and the wrong figure in the box, or an unpainted foot its a factory error.
People use the term variant incorrectly in the action figure community. Mainly on ebay just to make more money. like the terms "RARE" "VHTF" & "SOLD OUT EVERYWHERE"
When it comes to action figure collecting, "variant" has a different definition then your Websters dictionary

This is a production error. That its been changed or corrected simply means that QC is doing their job.

they do so because they want to feel special that they have something rare. everyone wants to have the spotlight for finding something. it's like the nerd version of staking a flag on the moon. it is more about ego and less about the product.

its a factory error..... no one is perfect..
I guess we live in a perfect world that anything wrong with a toy thats a mistake by the factory packaging them would be called a variant.

I once found an Ace vs. Wild Weasel comic pack that had a Cobra stand with Ace's name on it. What a traitor he is! I ended up leaving it there on the peg because I only purchase things that are correct. I could care less about how much money I could have gotten from some sucker on ebay for that error.
I made my own thread about this a few months back. Here is the link...

Ok for real what does it matter if you have something Different?
Is it because its Different? Is it because you have to have every single Figure thats out...even if its the same fig? Is it because you can throw it on ebay and maybe make a buck?
The whole stand with Falcon thing....do you really need to chase another comic pack down even though more than half of you hate the figure....just to have the Falcon pack with a Cobra stand? I mean maybe Hasbro put the stand in there knowing half of you hate the figure just to get you to chase the figure........and in turn sale more Figures that people hate????
Or the Black Destro head is it really that important to have a fig that was never in the comics or show with a black head?
I dont get it...please explain someone....

I can't even find any, well found one, wave 5 Comic packs where I'm at so though its most likely a packing error you are doing great just to find those. We still have many of the past wave packs here, at least from what I'm seeing warming the pegs.

This is not the first time this has happened. The Ace in my comic pack has a cobra stand, but I didn't realize and opened it.

Thanks for all the info. Except the fact i sense some bashing here. All i did was go to the store and find this. I dont go out of my way to finds errors or variants. I never said i was going to sell it on ebay and make millons.
I was just posting up on what i had found at the store and that there might be more out there. So buy it or leave it. I was just pointing it out.

I think the issue developed with this:
W5 comic pack variant other than destro!!!
And continued when the argument between variant and production error took off. Didn't help that you "begged to differ" about what makes which.
