G.I. Joe Issue #1 Operation Lady Doomsday
This folks was the start of G.I JOE as we know it. This issue was a milestone for the franchise. Most people only knew Joe as a 12” inch figure, the real fighting man. When G.I JOE made a comeback in the early 80,s no one realized how important this issue would be. The toys were now in a 3/34 format and with this a whole world of possibilities opened up. This issue contained two stories and introduced us to the original team. We were mesmerized by snake eyes, scarlet, Rock and roll, hawk, breaker, short fuze, zap, stalker, clutch, steeler, grand slam, flash and grunt for the first time. We were also introduced to the evil forces of Cobra as well; cobra commander, the baroness and of course the cobra troops. This issue was considered a stand alone story but the events portrayed had a major impact on the history of the comic years latter. This was also Dr. Adele Burkhart first appearance.
Title: Operation Lady Doomsday
2nd story Title: Hot Potato

Synopsis and review by ceraurus

Synopsis:
As this issue opens, a U.S. research station at the North Pole recently has been attacked. Uncertain exactly what happened, the U.S. military sends in four members of the G.I. Joe team – Stalker, Breaker, Scarlett, and Snake Eyes – to determine whether the Russians at a nearby arctic research station had anything to do with the attack.

Upon arriving at the Russian station, the Joe team discovers that the crew is dead. What’s more, the station houses an ultra-low frequency wave transmitter, designed to affect human emotions by generating fear and paranoia. The Joes also encounter Kwinn, an imposing Eskimo who wears a weasel skull necklace and wields a .30 caliber machine gun. Kwinn turns out to be quite an adversary and manages to get the better of the Joes. After confiscating their guns, Kwinn reveals he was hired by the Russian government to recover the frequency modulator from the “fear” machine. Apparently, the Russians in the station were beaming fear waves at the U.S. but themselves succumbed to its effects. Filled with paranoia, the Russian crew killed the American scientists before dying of exposure. After finishing his story, Kwinn leaves the Joes – lacking supplies – to die in the cold as he races to deliver the modulator to Russian agents waiting at the coast.

Yet all is not lost. In grand MacGyver fashion, the G.I. Joe team manages to construct an ice boat out of parts from a downed airplane. They race to head off Kwinn before his rendezvous. Kwinn manages to avoid an ambush and again has the Joes at gunpoint. It becomes clear the Eskimo is conflicted – he abhors giving the modulator to the Russians but he must uphold his contract. Once more, Kwinn takes off on his sled to deliver the modulator as scheduled. The Russians get their prize, but Kwinn has more tricks up his sleeve. He gave the Joes their weapons back but left the firing pins on his weasel skull necklace a mile behind. As they wait for their submarine to come and take them home, the Russian agents must get to the firing pins before the G.I. Joe team, who start out four miles away from the necklace. The issue closes with a scene of Stalker, Breaker, Scarlett, and Snake Eyes marching in the snow...Snake Eyes is wearing the weasel skull necklace.

Review (out of 4 stars): http://i234.photobucket.com/albums/ee303/ceraurus/star.gifhttp://i234.photobucket.com/albums/ee303/ceraurus/star.gifhttp://i234.photobucket.com/albums/ee303/ceraurus/star.gifhttp://i234.photobucket.com/albums/ee303/ceraurus/star.gif
One of the all-time G.I. Joe classics, this issue has a clear, tight plot line with a superb and memorable ending. To top it off, this comic introduces fan-favorite Kwinn, who plays an important part in subsequent story lines. This story was instrumental in developing my love for G.I. Joe as a 9-year-old, and it remains one of my favorites. As tribute to this issue, Hasbro recently released a Snake Eyes figure, wearing a parka and weasel skull necklace, as part of its 25th Anniversary line.

Memorable quotes:
“My God! Th-that face…” – Military officer, after seeing Snake Eyes without his mask.

“They are four miles from it to your one…but they are trackers…and you are not!” – Kwinn, describing the precarious situation he has left for the Russian agents.

The Joes - Stalker, Breaker, Scarlett, and Snake-Eyes

Synopsis and review by ceraurus

Synopsis:
In the opening scene, the G.I. Joe team has captured a Cobra stronghold and is in the process of rounding up prisoners and confiscating a large battle robot. The Joes are ordered to dismantle the robot and haul it back to the PIT (the G.I. Joe headquarters) for analysis.

Later, Hawk and Scarlett attend a tea social at the Chaplain’s Assistant School, which is built above the top-secret Joe base hidden deep below. The rest of the team attends to other matters, such as catching a bite to eat or cleaning weapons. Little do they know their earlier mission was part a ruse by Cobra to attempt to infiltrate the PIT – ancient Greek style. On the lowest level of the PIT, a timer in the robot becomes activated, and one bulky, metal hand starts to crawl across the floor. The robot’s first task is to seal the blast doors to any occupied room, trapping whoever’s inside. After accomplishing this, the robot begins to assemble itself.

The Joes rely on quick-thinking to extricate themselves. In one room Steeler provides some muscle to open a door, while in the other room Flash uses his laser rifle to burn his way out. Unfortunately, the robot has already completed its assembly and begins to work its way out of the PIT. If the robot makes it out of the heavily-shielded base, a signal will be sent to Cobra revealing the location of the Joe team’s hidden headquarters. Cobra Commander waits with a strike team ready to attack once the signal is received.

Through teamwork, the Joes fight off the robot and slow its steady ascent. Up above at the tea social, the sounds of battle rise through the floor vents. Hawk and Scarlett do their best to convince the partygoers – who are unaware there is a highly classified base beneath their feet – nothing is going on. Down below, Steeler, Breaker, and Clutch trick the robot into falling into an elevator shaft, and the massive automaton breaks into pieces at the bottom. It’s not over yet, because mechanical tentacles slither out of the robot’s head and it resumes its mission. Flash shoots the head as it tries to crawl up and out of the base. Full of even more surprises, the damaged head opens and tiny, four-legged robots crawl out. Resembling spiders, these transmitter-bearing robots scurry off in all directions. The Joes scour the PIT, hunting and destroying all of the tiny robots…all but one. The last spider has just made it to the top level – crawling out of the floor vent right in the middle of the tea social. Just in time, Scarlett smashes the robot with her foot, sending pieces back down the vent. The day is saved! With no signal telling them where the G.I. Joe base is, the Cobra strike team turns around and goes home. Is it their imagination, or do the partygoers hear the sound of celebration coming from below?

Review (out of 4 stars): http://i234.photobucket.com/albums/ee303/ceraurus/star.gifhttp://i234.photobucket.com/albums/ee303/ceraurus/star.gifhttp://i234.photobucket.com/albums/ee303/ceraurus/star.gifhttp://i234.photobucket.com/albums/ee303/ceraurus/star.gif
This issue continues the strong beginning for the G.I. Joe comic series. As with the previous issue, this is a thoughtfully-crafted and well-contained storyline with a solid ending. We get a chance to see the Joes spend extended time in the PIT as they try to keep the robot from escaping, and we’re treated to some humorous moments as Hawk and Scarlett attempt to keep the presence of a high-tech military base a secret from the Chaplain’s Assistants. As usual, the dialog among the Joes team members is light-hearted, even as their dealing with a deadly situation.

Memorable Quotes:
"Yessir! A half dozen Cobra troopers thought they had ol' Snake Eyes disarmed! Shoot, General! He shouldn't be allowed to carry that thing in his boot--it's gotta be against the Geneva Convention!" – Breaker, to General Flagg when asked whether there were any injuries during the assault of the Cobra stronghold.

"Holy spit!" – Steeler, while dodging the robot's attack and simultaneously delighting a certain 9-year-old reading the comic back in '82.

The Joes - Rock N Roll, Scarlett, Hawk, Flash, Breaker, Steeler, Clutch, Snake Eyes, Stalker, Zap, General Flagg
Cobra - Cobra Commander

First Strike, a paramilitary group funded by Cobra, has a base in Montana that Hawk and Grunt with support from Snake-Eyes infiltrate. First Strike is lead by Vance Wingfield and their mission is to start world war III. They have two nuclear bombs. One is put on a B-29 bomber and flown towards Russia and the other will be detonated here in America. Hawk is able shoot down the B-29 thereby collapsing First Strike's primary plan. The secondary plan is detonate the second bomb right underneath the compound. Vance Wingfield's wife shoots him in the back just after starting the countdown. The rest of the Joe team invades the compound to support Grunt & Snake-Eyes. Zap & Grunt then disarm the nuclear warhead and save the day.

G.I. Joe #5- "Tanks for the Memorie
Writer: Larry Hama
Penciller: Don Perlin
Summary: To prove a point to the Joint Chiefs, General Flagg has arranged for Steeler, Clutch and Breaker to drive the MOBAT in New York City's Armed Forces Day Parade. At the Pit, the three are cleaning up their tank and give the readers a tour of all its special features....while trying to impress Scarlett. Cobra finds out about the MOBAT's presence through a tap in airport security (hmmm) and decides to schedule a visit. Disguised as the "Springfield Drum and Bugle Corps" (who Breaker admits is the "worst marching band he's ever heard"), Cobra tries to capture the MOBAT in the midst of the parade. The Joes lead the Cobras on a chase through midtown Manhattan, managing to hide their large tank and evade pursuers. Depsite having no live ammo, they capture the Cobras by making creative use of the tank's external soundsystem and Breaker's bubble gum (they broadcast a loud "POP" and tell the Cobras that it was a warning shot. They immediately surrender). Clutch even locates Cobra's local base-- directly beneath the grandstand of the Joint Chiefs! Clutch crashes the MOBAT into the grandstand, and out pop a gaggle of Cobras, plus Cobra Commander and the Baroness. General Flagg has a face-to-face showdown with the head snake, but hesitates since the Commander is standing amidst a Girl Scout troop. Cobra Commander grazes Flagg in the temple with a bullet and makes his escape. When Flagg, a former marksman, is asked by Clutch why he didn't take the shot, Flagg simply whispers: "that's because we're the good guys".
Notes:

This may have been the only time General Flagg and Cobra Commander were face-to-face with each other.
This was the second issue to have its own animated commercial. In addition to the MOBAT, it was re-worked to sell the new Cobra figures that would be arriving, soon.
Both Steeler and Clutch enjoy flirting with Scarlett.
When Steeler is showing off the MOBAT's computers, Scarlett asks him: "Can I plug in a PAC-MAN cartridge"? Definitely 1982.
The Baroness has her beauty mark--which disappeared for the second half of issue #1
The way Cobra delivers information from the airport to Cobra Central is interesting. Shows that they have undercover contacts all over the country. Somewhat disturbing.
The Cobra courier, at one point, delivers the information to a "Mrs. Hood"
The password to get into Cobra Commanders' main bunker is "the mongoose, too, must die".
Cobra Commander is seen shooting target practice dummies of Stalker, Snake-Eyes and Scarlett.
Most importantly, this was the first mention of "Springfield", Cobra's true base of operations. A member of the grand stand jokes: "which one? There must be a Springfield in every state". I still say the Simpsons ripped off G.I. Joe with that town name.
While the first few pages are a tour of the MOBAT, they're not a toy advertisement. The MOBAT toy only fit one guy, waist-deep, in its turret. In the comics, the MOBAT seats three men fully and has room to spare.
-Funny moment where Steeler is using the MOBAT's telescope functions to "keep abreast of the rear guard situation"-- which means he's checking out a majorette's ass.
Once again, Cobra is using subterfuge in their tactics. More proof that they weren't just an "evil army that attacks ya'"
Second spotlight on the "MOBAT team" of Steeler, Clutch and Breaker. These three always seemed to appear together in the early issues.

Appearances:
Characters (with figures): Scarlett, Clutch, Breaker, Steeler Characters (no action figures, or "comic-only" characters): Cobra Commander. Baroness. General Flagg. General Austin. Several unnamed Joint Chiefs.
Vehicles and stuff (toys): MOBAT

G.I. Joe #6- "To Fail is to Conquer.. to Succeed is to Die (Ancient Afghan Proverb)"
Writer: Larry Hama
Penciller: Herb Trimpe
Summary: when an experimental US plane is shot down over Afghanistan, both the US and Russia race to recover it. Steeler, Clutch, Breaker, Stalker, Scarlett and Flash are air-dropped into Afgahinstan along with their easy-to-assemble Rough Terrain Vehicle (RTV). Meanwhile, back in the lower levels of the Pit, none other than HAWK appears to be radio'ing the mission details to Cobra! The Afghan team meet their CIA contact and an Afghani tribesman named Ahmed. After loading the cargo onto the RTV, they head for the coast of Pakistan, but soon run into the Russian contingent: the October Guard! After a small firefight (apparently both sides are lousy shots), they resort to hand-to-hand combat. Before either side can get an advantage, Cobra Commander and his troops show up and surround them.
Notes:

For the first time, a story is "..to be continued!"
Funny scene where the team is lounging around the Pit and Stalker says "Uh-oh, Hawk looks like he's got another mission for us". Hawk answers affirmative and Stalker replies: "Dag! I must be getting psychotic". Hawk corrects him: "you mean psychic". Stalker responds: "yeah, that too!"
This is the first mention of the Joe's usual airfield: McGuire AFB in New Jersey.
Steeler and Clutch both continue their flirting with Scarlett. Clutch asks her: "hey Scarlett, if you get sick of staring at Steeler's ugly mug, you can hop in the VAMP with me and we can, uh, run out of gas somewhere". Clutch was a fun, sleazy comic relief for the first 3 years of the book.
Scarlett's dialogue indicates that she might have a Georgia accent. "Ya'll" and stuff like that. She was never (or rarely) written like that, again.
While "Grand Slam" is shown as a mission particpant on the de-briefing screen, it's actually FLASH who is on the mission. The second early mix-up of the two characters (see issue #1). Somewhat understandable, since their action figures were nearly identical.
Stalker is definitely in charge of the operation. Affirming his early role as second-in-command of the team. Something that was carried over into the first 5-part cartoon series.
"Schrage" is also labelled as "Scrage" on one page.
"Daina" is also labelled as "Daini" on one page.
Once again, it's a Cold War era plot.

Appearances:
Characters (with figures): Scarlett, Clutch, Breaker, Steeler, Stalker, Breaker, Flash, Hawk, rest of team in cameos. Cobra Commander (I'm moving him to the "figures" classification, since his figure was released around this time as a mail-in premium). Characters (no action figures, or "comic-only" characters): Ahmed the Afgahni. Unnamed CIA guy.
Vehicles and stuff (toys): VAMP
Vehicles and stuff (not toys): RTV
Firsties:
Characters (no action figures, or "comic-only" characters): October Guard: Col. Brekhov, Schrage, Stormavik, Daina, Horrorshow
Vehicles and stuff (not toys): RTV, October Guard's "Kremlin Kiddie Kar".

Special Missions was a stand alone series that did not have much to do with the regular series. They had 1 or 2 stories that went along with the main title. This book started out with a preview that was found in issue 50 of the main series (see G.I Joe archive for this issue). For the most part this was a decent book, not great but no bad. The stories were interesting and each book gave us a look at different characters in a more personal manor. The main complaint I have with this book was the art work. I felt that Herb Trimpe was off on most of his work in this series. Still it was a cool series even with the art issue quirks. Special Missions was published from October 1986 until November 1989. Marvel also issued a trade paper back that compiled the first four issues and the lead off story from issue 50. I will have short summaries up soon and latter more lengthy reviews for each issue. Enjoy the covers and just like the marvel run, I will have interior art pages up soon.

The individual Special Mission issues influence on the main series fluctuates from being a completely separate story to having a minor influence or is a direct continuation from the regular Marvel series.

The last page is farewell to the series.

G.I. Joe Comics Magazine reprinted the main Marvel series in a digest format. Each issue reprinted three issues of the main series, with the exceptions being issues 1 (reprinted 1 and 2 of the main series) and issue 8 (reprinted 21 and 22 of the main series and two stories from Action Force). This series was published bi-monthly from December 1986 until December 1988. As a kid in this era, I had all the comics. For some reason, these digest books were really cool and handy. I did not have to pull out my books to read a story, all I had to do was read a digest issue. Part of me wishes IDW OR Hasbro would do something like this again.
