View Full Version : what is the big deal about the B.A.T. ???

I never had the B.A.T. figure as a kid (stopped collecting the original Joe stuff in 85) so the nostalgia factor isn't there for me. Besides the obvious reasons such as army building and being a completist....why is everybody so gung ho (no pun intended) over this figure? Yeah, I want one too....but I wouldn't put him above any other figure I'm looking for. It seemed everybody was really looking forward to the Viper when released and hated the articulation when he finaly came out and now he warms the pegs. So what is it? When I get my hands on one what is all the hoopla going to be about?

Good question. I had one when I was a kid and never thought much of them. They were considered too dorky sci-fi to go with GI Joe when I was a kid. Now everyone loves them.

Well, army building plus the fact that it is a damn good toy. Army builders want armies of good figures, not stupid ones like the Viper. I got my first BAT yesterday. Like you, my Joe interest waned after 1985, but there is no denying that with the cool weathering paint job, the interchangeable arms, and the general awesomeness of being a robot, this is a great figure.

Dude the viper is sweet. He gets a bum rap because so many people couldnt figure out how to turn his feet to the side and lift the feet up to make him stand correctly. If these were still $4.88 I would have got more vipers. He is a great figure.

oh and BATS are sweet looking.

I don't really know. Its a good figure, one of the better updates and modernizations we've seen in this line.

I guess its mainly the army-builder in all of us thats tipping demand so high. To me, he doesn't rank that high on important to find. Yeah, if I can find them, I'll get 2 more (3 total), but other than that, no big deal for me. I was more interested in Hawk, BBQ and Bazook.

So is the upcoming B.A.T. figure in the DVD set going to be the same as the carded one (other then that stupid Star Wars rocket launcher he comes with)?

Nostalgia for me. This toy got me very excited about it as a child. Looking back, I think ARAH went south starting with Sgt Slaughter (& Zandar, Dr Mindbender, Cobra La, etc.), but as a kid I loved it.

Well, except Cobra La.

The one in the DVD pack comes with a red face plate like the cartoon. He also does not have the black wash or whatever it is. He will be plain silver with no weathering.

I'm with you guys too, I think about 85 or 86 was the time I got out too - pre-Serpentor.

I never had a BAT either, never really appelaed to me either.

This bring up a subject I have been wondering about for a while now. I am all about the basic and "essential" types for troops - artic, desert, jungle, dog handler, SEAL, flame thrower, mine detector, ect. Once you start to get into some of the more "goofy" figures, I'm out.

What do we have left that we have not seen in the 25th line Cobra / Viper wise that is left of "essential" troops? We've got snow serps, tele vipes, CGs, eels and desert troops on the way now. Again, without getting into the more "goofy" troops (Alley Vipers, night vipers, BATS, ninjas ect) what do we have left from the RAH line we have not seen in the 25th yet?

I ask partially b/c I am getting tired of chasing hard to find Cobra troops, and then mulitples of them!! :(

The B.A.T. does rock, IMO, but it doesn't quite make that much sense. As a kid, I always liked the more "real world" figures, and disliked the crazy/zany/unrealistic ones, but for some reason, since G.I. Joe was technologically advanced, and in my head, Transformers was in the same timeline... B.A.T.s just made sense, for some reason.

The figure is a great update though. Plus, he's really well detailed, but I think all of Wave 9 are winners. The Snow Serpent is the best sculpt, but I think winter-troopers are always less desirable.

Plus, distribution, as low as it is on 25th figures, combined with the awesomeness of Wave 9, the sculpting (also, it's a completely new sculpt right?) and the fact that it's a "more versatile" troop builder than the Serpent, is why I've found only 1 B.A.T. at retail, while I've been able to buy 3 Serpents at the same rate, at retail price.

Both troop builders have been a pain in the ass to find though.

I always thought that the original B.A.T. was one of the most original and well done figures of that year. The big deal about the 25th B.A.T. is that they did a very good job of recapturing the look while giving it a much needed update.

As for army building them.. A lot of people didn't like the hand articulation on the viper and the feet constantly pull down no matter how much you wrestle with them... so this was the next new thing out for us who build armies.

Now granted despite the poor hand articulation on the Vipers, I did build those as well. As well as built an army around the Televiper too. (Same mold)

I've got 2 mint in box still, but I want a 3rd to open...

Still looking for a bent box in-store.

What's with the extra chest joint? Is it more than the normal mid-chest joint on the 25th figures?

I think he looks sick nasty!!!! Atiyculation is the best yet on any 25th(extra chest joint) and the attachments just make him sweet! I also love his proportions way better than most of the 25th.

My wife was helping me organize my "trophy" room the other day. She picked up some BATs and handed them to me. She is definitely the anti-geek. She has no clue about pop-culture and really isn't interested in anything relating to comics, toys, or sci-fi. However, she looks at the BATs and say, "These are actually better looking than the other stuff you have. They look pretty cool." She has never used the word cool with anything related to GI Joe before. So, that kind of confirmed what I thought about this figure. It's the best looking one so far, besides storm shadow and snake eyes commando.

It's not enough to just say the BAT rocks, he rocks for some very good reasons. He's one of the only ones I have that need no retooling or exacto surgery to believably hold an AK-47. His accessories are increadibly awesome, with multiple arm attachments and a place to stow 'em. So far the flamethrower is my fav (but can anyone tell me what the drill/raygun thing is?). He's tough. Often in the 'toon, Joes had to empty entire clips (and then reload!) to stop these suckers, and they could cripple a Whale with their bare (metal) hands. If you cut them in half with heavy fire, the top half could still function, crawling after you like the Terminator! These guys were no mere cannon fodder. When they hit the field, the Joes were in trouble unless they had some anti-tank weapons (or Sgt. Slaughter) on hand.

Oh yeah, and I have 8 vipers so far, and I never had trouble any getting any of them to stand after I tried turning their feet to the sides (if it doesn't work for you you're not doing it right), and they are the only ones that can hold their rifles believalby at chest level, rather than waist. If you think the hands look bad when their not holding a gun, then there's your problem right there. These guys aren't desk-jockeys! Stick a rifle in their hands for Pete's sake and send 'em in!

The original BAT came out when my time with Joes was waning, as a child. I wasn't as enthusiastic about the line at the time, however the BAT stuck out like a gleaming beacon of awesome and it was one toy that I had to have. It actually rejuvinated my interest in Joes for a short while longer, though I wasn't playing with them, or really any toys, as much at that time.

Nostalgia and kick-assed-ness for me make the BAT a must have. I only need one, as I'm not much of a troop builder. I still haven't seen one in a store.

A: Can they hold their weapons properly (two handed)?

B: Can they hold them up two-handed high enough to actually aim them, like a real soldier would?

C: If so, can we see pics?

I remember someone posted pics of the Viper holding his rifle up next to a pic of a special-forces guy in the same pose, and the Viper is the only one who can pull it off.

Despite the fact that I was starting to get a little too old for toys, the BAT was one of my favorites. This update looks so much better than the original, it's not even funny. I expect it to be a favorite of my modern collection.

The Viper, like the BAT, is pure awesome. Sure, I can get my other figures into good double handed rifle grips, but none of them look as good doing it, as the Viper. Something about him is just really fun, too. I think I've fiddled with the Viper, more than any other Joe I have.

When I was a kid and the BAT first came out, I hated it. It was too unbelievable... robotics weren't that advanced. Fast forward 20+ years, and now the BAT is one of my favorite figures. I think it's a combination of the fact that humanoid robots are almost a reality now, the terminator has acclimated me to the idea of a robot like this, plus the general awesomeness of this figure. Take those three things and this is the best figure yet, even though the original BAT was the beginning of the end of my Joe collecting as a kid.

for me, anyway, my joe collection is the original 82 and 83 line, in 25th style. i even have all of the vintage weapons and playsets and most display well with teh 25th line. i never did like all the sci-fi stuff that came later. HOWEVER, growing up i did have ALOT of joes, and had a BAT. it always had that extra play value with the extra arms, and as a kid, ROBOTS ARE FRIKIN COOL !!

That said, yes, my final joe display will NOT have the bats along my cobras, but i also collect really cool figures, and the bats will display well on their own as very cool robot figures with some pretty amazing features, and will get along well with the skeleton for ASA dvd set.

For me, I had finally managed to watch "Terminator" and then I saw the episode of the cartoon when Cobra first fielded the BATs. For the first time we saw the Joes shoot something and the BATs just kept coming! I remember my friends and I all thought that was really awesome (after all, we were 10 or 11).

Throw in all the extra attachments and it was one of my favorite figures. The new one is a tough looking update to a great figure.

I am glad they didn't do the little lenticular hologram. The holo sticker was always supposed to give the appearance of depth to the chest. I like that the new one actually has that depth molded in.

Hicks_Royel
08-16-2008, 01:59 AM
As is how I feel, too. The hologram was good in its time, but the new sculting is certainly a step in the right direction. Especially if we ever see the Battle Damaged version later on.

I think the big deal is how hard it is to find it. Sorta like finding a variant figure or a rare error fig. It could also help that the BAT is a fun figure to have to. I got lucky this morning and found one and I can easily understand why so many people want it. It's fun, it's a troop builder, and it's rare.
