View Full Version : I Scored HUGE - 25th Anniversary Wave 3 Heaven

Hi I just thought I would tell everyone to check their local Walmart today. My girlfriend brought me home 4 Zartans,3 Cobra Officers, 4 Fireflys, 4 Shipwrecks, and 5 Cobra Ninjas (RED) about 20 minutes ago. She stopped by when she was running an errand and when she saw them she picked them all up because she knows how much I have been looking for them. I still can't believe it just looking at them all, I have searched my state for hours and came up empty handed. If you guys want a picture I can upload one if you would really want to see it. Well, good luck in looking and I hope you guys have luck in your area today. They were also all $4.88 a piece so it came out to @ $97.00 - totally worth it. Again just want you guys to look as well so you can get them at cost.

where are you located? thanks for the tip!
RainMK
10-11-2007, 01:05 PM
I am located in New Hampshire, whcih is really the last place I would expect to have all these wave 3 in stock. So you guys are probably able to get them as well I would imagine seeing that most of you live in a more popular state ( :

Guys I collect as many GI Joes as I can, ya Im sure some people will be pissed but then again I have felt the same way every time I show up to the store to see one Snake Eyes dangling and bent. This isn't a post to brag by any means, just telling you all because I know lots of you are hardcore collectors as well...so I thought I would share my findings today.
Also would anyone be kind enough to tell me where I can purchase poly bags to keep my figures in? I went to Walmart but only found Ziplock etc. I need the ones that are just plastic about the width of the card, thanks in advance.

I had a pretty good score at wal-mart today too. I'm in Orlando, Fl and I got a
green-stalker
shipwreck
firefly
red ninja
cobra officer off of the pegs.
I walked down to the end of the aisle and found a pallet full of boxes. Noticed one said "Hasbro g.i.joe 25th single pack blah-blah-jargon" so I snatched it up. I asked the associate if I could buy the whole thing un-opened and she said no, but that they would need to open it and scan the figures individually. She boxcutter-ed it open and I saw that it was wave 2! So I took out
beach head
trooper
and left the rest on the pegs.
all together it was $37 and some change!
p.s. on the way out I also snagged a mqquarrie chewbacca for the cherry on the sundae!! :-()
best haul of the year so far!
keep the faith, they are coming folks

10-11-2007, 03:56 PM
Ya I am keeping these for myself, part of the reason I posted was to help you guys out there get them at retail. Nothing beats walking out of the store getting them at $4.88 a pop. ( : --- The last thing I would ever do is sell them on Ebay. There's nothing more that I hate when looking at this 25th anniversary line than seeing 1 figure on Ebay for the price of a wave ) :
Again good luck guys I really hope it works out for you like it did for me, I am really rooting for you. About my girl, I was going to marry her to begin with because she's such a nice person and does so much for me, but after this it looks like we are having a early Honeymoon tonight if you know what I mean ( ;

This kind of thing has already gotten out of hand on TNI, and it's pretty much uncalled for here.
Besides, his girlfriend got 'em. How would you know if she knew the dif or not anyway? Maybe she just cleared the pegs for her man. I still don't have wave 2 or 3 myself, you see me getting all hostile toward the guy? I'm not even envious. His lady was just at the right place at the right time.
You can't separate the collector from the scalper anyway. Can't do it here and you can't do it in the toy aisle. It's an impossible task, and like my buddy Arrow says, you would have to be psychic to actually know the dif.
I'm sorry to inform you that toy collecting is not as egalitarian as you would like it to be. There are many different "collectors" out there that buy up items for many different reasons. I tried to condemn a few once or twice back in the day myself.
Two words: Give up.
Let it go and you'll have less risk for heart attack. ;)

And another thing. If you don't like scalping, then don't buy into their mentality. The scalpers want you to think that these Joes are just as scarce (or will remain just as scarce) as you're afraid they are.
If these were one-of-a-kind museum items, then this would be another matter entirely. But regardless, you can't tell another person what to do with their collectibles.
Trust me, I've tried. ;)

Sure, it make you feel angry. That sort of thing used to infuriate me.
But you gotta check that anger; examine it hard.
1. How many units of this wave have been produced? Is it still in production?
2. Are you really saying that the bonafide rule of law or something should come down on a guy for scalping? What if this applied to everything else?
3. How do you know you won't get the last laugh yourself in the next few weeks when you nail down wave 3 for yourself?

I know scalpers. I have been to their homes and I know how they are doing financially. After you meet one you no longer envy them.
They're usually up to their armpits in stuff that nobody wants, from years gone by, that very few have made an emotional attachment to in the first place.
I know this one dude with TONS of unwanted SW ep.I figures. He tried to get on that bandwagon and it nearly lost him his home, job, wife, etc.
Not everyone is a Brian's Toys, and I wouldn't want to be them either. It's a miracle they're even breaking even.

Exactly. It's a helluva gamble buying up all of that stuff when all you need is one movie tie-in to completely bomb at the box office and you're stuck with less space in your basement, garage, or worse. . .you could be steadily paying more and more just to stick it all in a rental unit.
All because you're telling yourself, "This will be worth something, I know it! They're laughing now, but I'll show 'em!" Forget that nonsense.
A collectible has to be in the hands of the general populace before it becomes popular enough later on to profit. And collectors don't count. There's NO WAY enough kids will be able to get a foot in the door of the 25th line to continue "the legacy" because even collectors are killing it. :D
This "investor" mentality that the typical thritysomething scalper/hoarder has, is a throwback misnomer to what grandma and grandpa told them about antiques and stuff.
The problem is that they forgot to tell them the value on X item was only increased due to the Great Depression, war rationing, an oil crisis, bans, etcetera.

Are we talking about a commodity here? You seem to think of it that way. I don't. But scalpers do. Hmm. It's a toy. It won't save you from starvation. If WWIII comes, the last thing you'll be scrabbling for when it comes to hard currency will be toys.

I'm not gonna flame the guy, I'm not going to get all ticked off, because it's his money, and he's got every right to buy those up, but yeah, I won't lie, it bugged me a little bit to see that.
Guess it'll save me some gas money and travel time, but it would have been nice maybe for him to shoot a post saying that Wave 3 was in stock and he left 3 full sets on the pegs for other folks in his area.

Well, I am guessing to the average only one per character (except for the army builders maybe) collector, it is pretty annoying to read that a guy bought 4 of every figure. Face it, these figures are so hard to find that it definitely seems greedy to do this. But, it is his money and he can do whatever he pleases to with his hard-earned money. Most of us would probably only buy 1 of each and leave the rest for others. I never buy multiples unless it's an army builder type soldier anyways. I guess it's good that this stuff is flying off the shelves, but it's bad when 1 guy completely wipes out a store's inventory all by himself. Yeah, I'm envious and yes I wish I could find these figures myself. Oh, and yes I wish everybody would be mindful of other collectors out there. But this is reality - most people could give a damn about anybody else and that's why I think this guy's "score" bothered me a lot.

Is this some kind of "deeper" virtue you're advocating now? "Toy egalitarianism" is over my head. . .and I too am guilty of failing to oppose "the commodity fetish"?
You feel like you need to crusade
Zis is a clear indikator of psychological projection, ja? One would ask, who saddled up their high horse first?
My girlfriend would only have took one of everything and left the rest for others.
You didn't say that earlier. . .

If he did not buy them up like that or his Girl, somebody else would have just the same. I'm glad a fan got them and not a scalper. These do not last for more then a few hours on the shelf, everybody is looking for them. If you want to blame somebody for the lack of figures on the east coast call up wal-mart and see how far that gets you, they just do not care. It sucks that we need to wait so long to get our Joes. I went on a mission today to find mine.
Out of 8 wal-marts = Nothing
4 Toys "R" Us = 1 set of wave 2
6 Targets = 1 set of wave 3
Just drop the back and forth Ish talking so we do not need to lock the thread.

Well, I've got my own, personal success story yesterday that might lighten the mood a bit. I went to 2 Targets and 2 Wal-Marts, and, of course nothing. In fact, the Wal-Mart woman said the following when I finally asked why there weren't even pegs, and I paraphrase:
"Our toy manager must have deleted the Joes out of our system. Maybe you can find some left in the clearance section."
She clearly knew what was going on. . .anyway, despite all that, guess what I did find?. . .that's right. . .SNAKES ON A TRAIN! For only 4 bucks at Big Lots! Heavenly bliss! Haven't seen it yet, but man, that snake on the cover is HUGE! Suffice it to say, this made up for my earlier disappointment.
And then I found a guy only charging 10 bucks per wave 3 Joe on the Bay, so I bought Zartan and Firefly that way, canceled by supposed "preorder" with BBTS, and dealt with it.

Let me set the record straight my GI Joe brothers and sisters. I see a lot of heated arguments arising from what I did. I'm the farthest thing from a scalper you can imagine. You can whip some ridiculous price out at me like $40.00 for a Zartan etc and guess what, I wont sell it. Check me out on Ebay at Loyal_to_Cobra, you wont see me trying to sell these waves like a true scalper would, im different, im actually a fan. It' s worth a lot more to me than making a couple quick bucks. I grew up on collecting these with my brother and was fortunate enough to have a mother and father that constantly took me to the toy store to buy me new ones. I even have a Cobra tattoo because that's how much I loved the GI Joe figure line etc.
So what, I bought multiples of non army builders. I also bought a Gold headed Destro AFA graded 90 just because I wanted to have it for $200.. when in all reality it cost what..?? $10.00 tops at the convention. I'm not bitching, thats what I was willing to pay for it. The point is I am not one to turn around and sell these to make money, they are going to a good cause, a collector that will cherish them, display them, keep them for memories etc. The point of post here was to tell you guys to look out, to get them at retail in example Walmart for $4.88 - not to brag and have some people label me as greedy etc. As for my girl, all she had to do was see them to buy them all up, it was going to happen without me even telling her to. This is because she knows how much love I have for GI Joe, especially this 25th line. I hope I didnt offend anyone, your day will come when you see multiples, grab them if you want its your right. It just happened to be that I thought I would never even get most of them in my stores and that I would have to Ebay a lot of them, but I got lucky and my gf spotted them. Thats all there really is to it. I dont even have 1 multiple or even a set for wave 2, my area has either been really dry or they are bought up quickly, all i have are 4 figures from it so trust me I have been on the same boat as you up until today.
Also thank you Destro, Obiwanjacoby, Shogi and all others that support me in this. It comforts me to know that some people don't see it as greedy and that some of us are on the same level when we talk about this.
Compulsive Collector

I don't think you need to defend yourself, man.
I have four Zartan figures. I have two to open, and one of each package version to keep carded. I also have four Red Ninjas. I opened two already, I'm going to open a third, and I have another to keep carded. I have two each of Shipwreck, Stalker, and Firefly, too.
And you know what? I don't care if anyone doesn't like it. We're not socialists, fellas. We live in America, and if I get to them first with money in hand, they're mine. Wanting something doesn't mean you're entitled to it. If that makes me greedy, then whatever. I'm still going to get a good night's sleep in a few minutes.
And honestly, the whole, "but it's okay if they're army builders," line is funny. What about all the people who haven't even found one trooper or officer? That's cool, but if they can't get Firefly, it's the end of the civilized society?

She clearly knew what was going on. . .anyway, despite all that, guess what I did find?. . .that's right. . .SNAKES ON A TRAIN! For only 4 bucks at Big Lots! Heavenly bliss! Haven't seen it yet, but man, that snake on the cover is HUGE! Suffice it to say, this made up for my earlier disappointment.
And then I found a guy only charging 10 bucks per wave 3 Joe on the Bay, so I bought Zartan and Firefly that way, canceled by supposed "preorder" with BBTS, and dealt with it.
snakes on a train?

I really didn't mean to break balls in my original post, and I am glad that a Joe-Lover scored well.
My only zinger is that I recall a few times in my life as a toy / Joe lover to see a fella or two running out of a toy aisle with an entire case or two of items and myself left with none. Reckon that if ole Shipwreck was my fav character and someone bagged four and I had none it would be a bit upsetting. Most collector / fans that I know get two copies at most. One to open and one to keep packed away.
I am quite pleased that you have an ebay profile to back up the fact that you are not one of the vultures that too many of us have had to deal with to get an item that we want.
I think I was originally a bit miffed because I had read a post by another member right before your post that had asked if anyone needed help with figure finding and was going out of his way to make no profit and then to read about a store clearing experience.
Where I live these 25th figs are DAMN hard to find and I hope my jealously can keep it's way out of my posts.

Wow, I wandered in to a heavy thread here. I was very pleased to see that a local Wal-Mart had 3 cases of wave 3 today, hopefully this is the beginning of the surge. I read somewhere that a Hasbro rep told someone that these things were so popular they had started shipping them air freight from China, rather than on boat. They will come.
On the topic of ladies, my fiance was really cool about me collecting these Joes. She helped me hunt a little, and said she loved to see my face light up when I found them in stores. She was really cool, then the collection started growing, and I had to order a special Destro with a "funny costume" then new waves came out week after week, then I started going to WM every night at 11, and then every morning at 5, then I was at Target every morning when it opened, and driving hours away just to look for them, then there were "the ones that looked just like the other ones except for some little difference"...One day she said, "I'm glad it won't be the 25th Anniversary anymore after December". I had to inform her that it kept going, and there were more waves in store in 2008. She was fed up, and said "No more, you love them more than me"! I said, "You're right", and took the diamond ring back. I pawned it, and now I have a ton of loot to buy new toys.

I'm just kidding about the last part, she is so much more than I deserve that I would stick them all in the microwave like I was 13 again if she asked me, but this poor girl had no idea how much I needed to feel like a kid again, or how these things would help achieve that end. At the end of the day though they are just toys, designed to bring us joy and happiness...can't we all just get along?

Well, on a message board discussing A Real American Hero we will learn a lesson or two about Real American Capitalism. Grats on the find, Rain. And not to flame at all, but I can't possibly fathom what you would do with 4 sets.
But I definitely can't cast the first stone. I've been known to grab more than one. One for myself. One to pay for both (if the price is right). I'm fully within the mindset that this is a hobby that can pay for itself (and then some) if you're at the right place at the right time. I'm as guilty as any.

I'm not trying to beat a dead horse here, as Shogi has already stated this...
That being said...I will say this only once:
For the love of all that's holy, let's all be adults. When you were eight years old, you walked in to the toy store...saw ROWS of joes...and said to yourself "one day, when I have a job and money...I'm going to by ALL of them"...
Yet now, certain people seem to feel somewhat violated because they couldn't find what someone else did.
ENOUGH.
Adults bickering over toys is about as useless as a bag of sugar at a diabetic convention.
If someone wants to spend their hard earned money and scarf up everything...more power to them. Know why? "You" wouldn't feel if you found them first.
Seriously, it's rediculous.
I want to make something clear...this post isn't directed towards anyone in particular. It does apply, however, for those to whom the shoe fits ;)
Now, can we get back to having enjoyable conversations about toys rather than "wah!"?
That would be great.
That is all. Carry On.

That's cool, but if they can't get Firefly, it's the end of the civilized society?
so does the package variant zartan change color?

Well, I look at it like this. If toys can evoke joy and satisfaction in us, well then they can certainly make us feel frustrated and angry, too. I think what you are seeing is a lot of people really mad that they are nearly impossible to find right now and some people are posting that they scored a set of 4 or 5 or even 6 of each figure. It's like a man desperately searching for food being told that somebody just found 25 steaks and ate them all. Yes, it's quite dis-heartening and very frustrating to read. But if somebody can post their huge score, people also have a right to grumble about it if they so wish. Toys certainly all make us happy. But sometimes the hunt for these plastic pieces of fun can also make us mad, raving lunatics who are as bad as a menopausal 50-year old woman.

So you're saying it's wrong for somebody to be upset at somebody for buying up multiple figures and to post their opinion on the matter?
And to quote what RainMK said, "I hope I didn't offend anyone, your day will come when you see multiples, grab them if you want its your right."
Compulsive Collector - "Having "a right" to do something doesn't mean we should do it."
I could care less what you do, but you can't expect everybody to be happy about what you posted in the first place.
He (RainMK) had a right to buy all of those, yes. But by your own words does that mean he should have done it? Food for thought there, ComplusiveCollector. But what you think is wrong or right may not be what somebody else thinks is wrong or right, so we all have an opinion and an option to say or do different things. You think buying everything on the pegs and leaving none for other collectors is fine...........I do not think it's cool. You think it's okay to post this huge score but not let others disapprove or argue the fact that it was possibly in bad form or even greedy........I do however. And guess what? Neither of us is wrong or right. We can argue forever, but this is an open and public forum. And I don't think voicing my opinion on what you did is against forum rules or was something that I or anybody else shouldn't have done.
C.I.A.D.
10-15-2007, 06:27 PM
So you're saying it's wrong for somebody to be upset at somebody for buying up multiple figures and to post their opinion on the matter?
No, I believe what he is trying to say is that one can definitely share their Nerd Anger (which we ALL have), but at least go about it a certain way.
To be angry at the situation? Sure. To be angry at the person? What for? Do you know that individual personally?
Sure, it sucks when we can't find anything on pegs...but do we all think it sucks when we're "that guy" who's buying everything in sight with the look of an 8 year old at Christmas time in his eye?
People have to keep in mind...G.I.Joe is HOT right now. TF Purists, SW Purists, Old & New School fans have jumped on the bandwagon. We ALL want figures. That's why we can't find'em. But hey, isn't that a good thing for us all in the long run? Won't that mean larger orders after Christmas once retail receives an uber bitchslap from all the people that want 25th items?
I'll be the first one to say "Dude, YOU SUCK!" when someone finds something that I haven't found yet. But it's all out of fun. To actually be angered by a situation you have no control over...like I said before, it's like bringing a bag of sugar to a diabetic convention...nothing but a waste.
So everyone, remember, we're all adults...and you're more than welcome to vent when you want. It's always better to get it off of your chest. Just remember that there's a certain way to go about doing it...
CONTROL YOUR NERD ANGER! :p

Well, I can honestly say I never directed any anger at him personally and wasn't even angry at RainMK. What made me angry was when CompulsiveCollector said that what some of us said was wrong. I am over the whole thing now, anyways. I just think it shouldn't shock somebody that posts about buying a bunch of figures that are really hard to come by right now to receive some negative or slightly annoyed feedback in these forums.
You are right C.I.A.D., it could be good and it ultimately will be good for this line. But just because Hasbro might get more orders at Xmas time doesn't mean we'll get a ton of Wave 2 or 3 ever again. It's doubtful that wave 2 or 3 are ever going to be re-issued so I'd say that most of the figures in those waves are always going to be on the "rare" and hard to find side.

No worries, my post wasn't directed towards you, but everyone in General. I quoted you because you struck a good point, and do so again.
Yes, people are going to be all sorts of angry when they've just spent $50 on gas to drive around and find nothing but hurt feelings, get home and see that some schmoe 2 towns over just found wave 2, 3, and a MISB USS Flagg someone found in the back storeroom.
I would say that it's completely reasonable to "hear" someone say "oh, that sucks, I can't find crap, yet you just found Jessica Alba in a Bikini holding a Terrordrome". But to have any hostility towards an individual because of the haul...meh, just misdirected anger IMO.
The thrill of the hunt, ladies & gents. It kills us to see our buddies take down a friggin' 12 point buck while we've managed to catch nothing but 2 squirrels and a cold...same thing here. Trust me, NONE of us will feel bad the day we walk in to (insert store here) and find the entire wave. Not one of us will say "hmmm, you know what? I'll just grab one and leave the others. Someone else may want them".
So again, I agree that there's definitely room for anger...just not when it's mis-directed. ;)

I can understand the annoyance and frustration over getting these toys and seeing others with mass quantities. Half of me does think that some buy these up just to wave it in the face of the others, even if they would never admit it. But its not my money either.
These are like finding a needle in a haystack, especially if you only have time to go looking once a week or less. I would be happy just to find 1 or 2 of each fig.

I don't hold any ill-feelings towards RainMK, either. I think it's good that we can discuss this great action figure line together on here. And the more we buy and the more money we spend, the longer Hasbro will make these guys!!!!!

So you're saying it's wrong for somebody to be upset at somebody for buying up multiple figures and to post their opinion on the matter? No, that's not what I said at all. I said, Having "a right" to do something doesn't mean we should do it. Do you see the word "wrong" anywhere in that sentence? That's an arbitrary term that doesn't really belong in a discussion about grown men collecting toys.
He (RainMK) had a right to buy all of those, yes. But by your own words does that mean he should have done it? Food for thought there, ComplusiveCollector. That's actually not food for thought, nor is it even close. He bought something he wanted with money he earned; that's hardly tantamount to getting all worked up in a fit of jealousy on the internet.
Serious question, if you can answer it without getting emotional: Do you believe in all apsects of socialism, or only as they apply to collecting action figures?
But what you think is wrong or right may not be what somebody else thinks is wrong or right, so we all have an opinion and an option to say or do different things. You think buying everything on the pegs and leaving none for other collectors is fine...........I do not think it's cool. So you believe that you are in a position to tell others how they should spend their money? Interesting. Please see the above question.
You think it's okay to post this huge score but not let others disapprove or argue the fact that it was possibly in bad form or even greedy........I do however. I never said anyone should be prohibited from doing things. I believe that we, as adults, should be capable of containing our emotions without being directed to do so. You are, of course, free to disagree with me.
What made me angry was when CompulsiveCollector said that what some of us said was wrong. Again, I never used the word "wrong", but even if I had, I honestly don't care if I made you angry, just like I don't care if my buying habits make you angry. You want these figures? Beat us to them, period. You aren't entitled to anything just because you want it, and I'm only responsible for maintaining one collection: mine. That's not to say that I won't help out a fellow collector, because I have and I will. At the end of the day, however, I'm far more interested in my stuff, and I know for a fact that most other collectors would agree with me.

Caring is one thing. I don't like to waste my time looking for something, only to come up short, any more than anyone else does. What I basically meant was yes, we all have a "right" to be jerks, but that doesn't necessarily mean we should be jerks. I actually find it amusing that this sentiment would anger someone.
I haven't found the Cobra Legions five-pack yet, but I'm not going to tell someone who bought five or six of them that he's greedy, or that he should have left them for me, me, me. Hey, he found them and I didn't, so congratulations to him. I'll find them eventually, or I'll relent and pay a premium on eBay, but I just don't see the point in directing negativity at another collector who's simply enjoying his/her hobby. We are all very lucky to have the disposable income necessary for this thing we do, and I'm having way too much fun to go knocking another collector's game.

Exactly. Know what? I found 5 Legions sets. HA HA HA!
Now, know how many I kept? 1. 4 others were sold AT COST to other members of the community since they couldn't find them.
Seriously though....I think there have been many valid points made in this thread....that being said, at the end of the day, here's what it boils down to:
1. You earn your money, you can spend it how you see fit.
2. This is America, not Bakalakadakastan. When Capitalism becomes defunct, then I, and others, will feel bad about buying things.
3. CONTROL YOUR NERD ANGER!

Just stopped by 2 Targets and 2 Walmarts. 3 Joe Boxsets at one Walmart and nada everywhere else. Did buy the Deluxe Edition DVD of Transformers, the one with the transforming Op. Prime case, so it wasn't a total loss. Actually, the dvd was the main reason for checking any of those places but secretly I was hoping to find the motherload of 25th figures.

Y'know, I'm kinda upset that no-one even gave a small chuckle at 'Real American Capitalism'. Seriously - am I just losing my touch?

I just hit wally world and found this:
On the shelves:
3 Cobra legions sets
4 Joe sets
On the pallet:
2 cases of 5 packs
2 cases of wave 2
I took.....IT ALL!!!!!! Just kidding ;)
I grabbed a Serpy for a custom idea, and a Viper Pilot and Lady Jaye to replace my defective ones (And I mean real defects as in a broken arm and the plastic bubbling up on the Troopers face so he looks like a leper!)

Wow. Nice haul. My only question (and this really isn't a flame towards either hauls). What do you do with so many of them? 1 MOC/1 Open and the rest for trades, custom fodder, ebay, wallpaper, etc..?
