Be careful doing this type of thing...since the auction wasn't won theres no record of person X buying this item so neither of you will be able to leave feedback nor have any way to deal with issues that may come up. since you're the seller you'll get the money first (paypal can be retracted even after they pay saying you never sent the item or whatnot) if you do this try to have him pay some other way ie a cashiers check, personal check etc. and make sure it goes through before sending the item.

I wouldn't trust anything like that.
Don't end it early just because some Joe Schmo wants what you're selling. There might be someone out there wiling to offer more so I don't know why you'd want to give that up.

I'm pretty sure it's not ebay legal.
However, if you do decide to go this route. Make sure you get the money first. If you use paypal, ship with delivery confirmation or some type of tracking. Typically when there's a paypal dispute, they'll side with the shipper if he used delivery confirmation

that is something that is not ok with ebay but its not a big deal as long as the buyer pays via paypal and you are able to ship with some kind of delivery confirmation or tracking number. If you do close your auction and sell outside of ebay, all you are missing out on is the feedback and ebay does not get the final credit value, so you will actually save a little bit of money. I have been on ebay since 03, have over 2600 feedback with a rating of 99.4 and have done this numberous times over the years and I have never once been burned by this, as I said above, it just saves me a little bit of money on the final value fees that ebay charges.

if he bids, you have an option to sell to the highest bidder for his highest bid.
its "ebay legal" as it is an option the ebay priveds you. I have done it before with no problems

Is it eBay legal? No.
Just watch yourself. As others have mentioned, be sure to ship to a confirmed PayPal address and get delivery confirmation. Do not ship until payment has cleared.

Ending Your Listing Early (http://pages.ebay.com/help/sell/end_early.html)
What he said. It IS ebay legal. you have the option to end an item early to sell it to the current highest bidder at the current price. I asked someone to do this last week, the seller agreed, and was even able to send me an invoice through ebay, so it had me listed as the winner, it went into my items won column and everything is proceeding as if I used a buy it now.

I've done both things: asked people to end the auction early or been asked to end my auction early. Too many paranoid people here. As long as you get paid via paypal and ship to a confirmed address, everything will be fine. You can add delivery confirmation just to make sure, but it's not 100% necessary. Paypal protects BOTH seller and buyer and will respond to either one in case something happens.

Always put delivery confirmation on items being sent via USPS.

I've been the buyer and seller in this type of transaction before. Never had a problem at all. Ebay frowns upon it because they want there cut, let's face it ebay wishes they could get a percentage of every item sold any where.

I've had people ask me to end auctions early, I always tell them that if they want the item bad enough they can bid on it like everyone else.
I had some old football with some autographs, I had 4 people ask me to end it early for around $100-$150. It ended up selling for almost $600.
